The new Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA) test will be required for licensure for graduates of approved programs at Old Dominion University after December 31, 2006. Thus, candidates COMPLETING their approved program by December 31, 2006, and applying for the Virginia license WILL NOT be required to take this test.

NOTE: Student graduating from approved programs and applying for a Virginia license May 2007 and beyond will be required to take the Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment to be licensed as a teacher. If you have questions regarding this requirement, please contact your program advisor.
The Virginia Department of Education is offering to reimburse 30 candidates from ODU, in the graduating class of 2007 and beyond (who are required to take this test to be licensed) the opportunity to take this test on January 7, 2006. This is the only opportunity to take the test with reimbursement from the Virginia Deparment of Education. The cost of the test is $110.00. To register for the test please go to the Teacher Education Services Office, Education Building Room 152. This opportunity is available on a first come, first serve basis.

November 30, 2005 The Virginia Department of Education is in the process of developing a different examination for licensure. This test is the Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment. Old Dominion University is a field testing site for this new licensure assessment. As a student at ODU, you have the opportunity to participate in the field testing procedures. This will give you an opportunity to see the format of the test and earn a $25 voucher for each test you take. The field test is December 10, 2005, between 9am and 5 pm at your convenience, Constant Hall, Rooms 1052-1055. Please read the attached flier for more details and to sign up and reserve a space.

September 24, 2004 SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM ESTABLISHED BY SCHEV - ODU will be receiving $64,000 in Scholarship/Grant funds from SCHEV for the 2004-2005 academic year. The funds, to be used for the Higher Education Teacher Assistance Program (HETAP), will be awarded via the Teacher Education Services Office. This scholarship program was established by SCHEV to help address the teacher shortage in Virginia by assisting undergraduate students enrolled in a K-12 teacher preparation program. Preference is given to students enrolled in a teacher shortage content area identified by the Virginia Department of Education.
Eligible students must meet the following criteria:
  • be enrolled full time
  • undergraduate
  • demonstrate financial need
  • be a VA resident
  • have a minimum 2.75 gpa

Awards are $2000 for the academic year. Any students who believe they may qualify should contact the Teacher Education Services Office, 152 Education Bldg. 683-3348.

Virginia Teaching Scholarship Loan Program Application for 2004-2005 is available now. Candidates for the scholarship loan must meet the following criteria:

  • must be domiciliary residents of Virginia and be at or beyond the sophomore year in college with a minimum grade point average of 2.75;
  • must be enrolled part-time or full-time at Old Dominion University in a teacher preparation program in a designated shortage area*;
  • must be recommended by the University where they are enrolled; and
  • must have submitted a completed application packet.

APPLICATION Packets available in the Office of Teacher Education Services and Advising, 152 Education Building.
DEADLINE:
Completed applications must be received by MAY 7, 2004.

*Teacher shortages areas: all areas of special education (speech/language pathology, hearing disabilities, visual disabilities, severe emotional disturbances, severe disabilities, earliy childhood special education, learning disabilities, and mental retardation), chemistry, physics, earth and space science, foreign languages, technology education, trade and industrial education, business education, mathematics, library media (pk-12), English as a second language, reading (reading specialist), art (pk-12) education, and owrk and family studies. PRACTICUM PLACEMENT NEW PROCEDURES -- EFFECTIVE SPRING 2003

In an effort to facilitate the more timely placement of students in field-based practicum courses, ALL students will be required to complete a request for practicum placement when registering for the course. This request must be submitted to Office of Teacher Education Services, Education Building, Room 152 by Tuesday, December 10, 2002.

Students requesting placements in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Suffolk, Portsmouth, or Chesapeake, can pick up the necessary school district Practicum Placement Request forms at the Virginia Beach Higher Education Center, Portsmouth Tri-Citiy Center, or the Office of Teacher Education Services at the Main Norfolk Campus.

TELETECHNET students requesting placements via TELETECHNET in other school districts may download the Practicum Request Form. This form must be completed and submitted to the respective site director. The site director will send the request to the Office of Teacher Education Services located in the Main Norfolk Campus.
