Student Teaching

Students preparing for careers in teaching spend one full semester observing, assisting, and teaching in school settings. Student teaching positions are coordinated by the Office of Teacher Education Services through various School Personnel Offices in the area. Students may request assignments to a desired school or school division when they prepare their Request to Student Teach. However, such requests are not guaranteed. Old Dominion University seeks to place students with cooperating teachers who are experienced and successful. OTS Faculty carefully review the assignments to make sure that the placement is satisfactory. Students should not attempt to coordinate their own placements. Technology Education student teachers typically complete two experiences in different schools, one a middle school and one a high school. Normally, Marketing Education student teachers are assigned to one high school. Students admitted to student teaching must meet all requirements of the Darden College of Education state-approved programs in their teaching fields. In addition, students must achieve at least a 2.5 grade point average and receive the approval of their program leader regarding professional competence and personal characteristics. All programs, require that students pass the University Exit Examination of Writing Proficiency prior to student teaching. Clearance for speech and hearing and a negative tuberculin test are required prior to student teaching.

 It is the policy of the Marketing Education program not to allow students to substitute teach while they student teach. The student teaching experience calls for an expereinced teacher to be available full time to supervise and assist the student teacher. When the student teacher is placed in a substitute teaching position, that full-time supervision is lost.

Substitution of prior teaching experience for student teaching can be approved by the director of teacher education services. Students should request a recommendation from their Program Leader prior to making such a request.nbsp;

The Requirements

Student teachers are expected to crefully follow their assigned school rules and regualtions. They are expected to dress, act, and perfom as teachers. They should insist that their students call them "Mister," "Miss," or Misses. They should attend all school activities, meetings, and events that their cooperating teacher attends. They should be prepared for class and deliver their instruction as they have been trained.

 The University Supervisor will visit several times during a student teacher's experience to evaluate prgress and to offer suggestions. Should a student teacher experience any difficulty with his or her cooperating teacher, or any other problem in the school, the University supervisor should be notified immediately. Periodic student teaching seminar meetings are scheduled for student teachers and they are expected to attend.

Student teachers are formally evaluated by their cooperating teacher twice during each student teaching placement. One of the evaluations comes midway through the experience and serves as to discussion devise. The second comes at the end of the exepreince and is the evaluation for record. Student teachers are also required to be evaluated by an administrator at each placement. The administrator evalaution should come toward the end of the experience.

The NTE

THE NATIONAL TEACHER EXAMINATIONS (NTE)

 Most students seeking degrees and/or initial certification through completion of approved programs in the college are required to complete the Praxis I Core Battery examination and the Specialty Area examination in the subject in which they seek endosement. The examinations must be taken and the scores received back prior to submitting a request for teaching licensure. Therefore, the exams should be taken no later than the semester before students graduate or complete their teacher education program.

 Registration forms are available in the Office of Teacher Education Services. Applicants for teacher licensure in Virginia are required to achieve passing scores on all three Core Battery exams of the Praxis I exam and one Specialty Area exam. Students completing teacher preparation programs at Old Dominion University will not be recommended for teacher licensure until they have achieved the required passing scores. Students may retake a battery or test in which their score did not meet the state's requirement.

 Marketing Education students must take the Marketing Education Specialty Exam. Technology Education students seeking the full endorsement must take the Technology Education Specialty exam. Those in the Military Transition Middle School Technology Education do not have to take a Specialty exam.
