Improper Real Player Settings Sometimes Causes Poor Video Quality

Improper Real Player settings can sometimes cause video playback to be very poor. Some of these symptoms may include choppy video, choppy audio, or frequent buffering. In many cases, this problem occurs because the Real Player thinks you have a 56k modem when you in fact have a high-speed connection such as cable modem or DSL. Because the player thinks you have a much slower internet connection, it tries to scale down the video quality to match the slower connection speed.

The Real Player automatically detects your connection speed when it is first installed. It does not automatically attempt to detect your connection speed after that unless you manually tell it to do so. If you installed the Real Player before you upgraded your modem connection to a high-speed connection, you will probably need to change the settings as described below. Even if you had a high-speed connection before you installed the Real Player, it is probably a good idea to make sure you have the right settings.

Follow these steps to ensure your Real Player is configured properly for your connection speed:

If you are using Real One Player

  1. Select the "Preferences..." menu option from the "Tools" menu.
  2. Select "Connection" from the category listing on the left side of the window.
  3. Make sure your computer is connected to the internet and then select the "Test Connection" button. Follow the onscreen instructions to perform the test.
  4. If the connection speed detected is inaccurate, you should manually change the "Normal" and "Maximum" fields to more closely match your true internet connection speed.
  5. Select the "OK" button to save your settings.

If you are using Real Player 8

  1. Select the "Preferences..." menu option from the "View" menu.
  2. Select "Connection" tab.
  3. Change the "Normal bandwidth" and "Maximum bandwidth" fields to more closely match your true internet connection speed.
  4. Select the "OK" button to save your settings.
