BUSINESS AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY-Part I

Subject:  8130 Advanced Marketing
Time required:  1 day
Prerequisite Skills:  Completion of chapter 2 - with passing test score of at least 84% on the material.

Set:  Should a firm pull out of a community that is so heavily dependent on it?  How shoulda a manager choose between the interests of the employer and those of the employee?  This very issue just came up in Hershey PA.  The charitable trust that controls Hershey Foods wanted the sell the company in order to diversify; the town was opposed because they did not want to trust a foreign company.  Nestles, with their livelihood.

Rationale:  Social forces impact businesses in many ways.  Whether change occurs quickly or slowly, business must adapt.  Its need for human and physical resources must be in step with public acceptance of their actions, while providing the goods and services demanded.

Objectives:  Describe the changing nature of the population, the labor force, and their impact on businesses.  Discuss how values have changed and how business has adapted to those changes.  Consider the need for business to grow and the need to protect the natural environment.  Suggest way in which business can be socially responsible.  Predict how changes in society and business will affect employment in the future.

Input:  Powerpoint presentation.

Modeling:  Businesses are modifying the work setting and upgrading the important role employees play in developing successful firms.

Guided Practice:  Orally quiz student on their understanding of ideas, terms, rules, and points of information in presentation.

Assessment:  Pop quiz - 10 questions they can use their class notes to answer.

Closure:  Announce we are going to continue working on our "My Business Inc." projects.  Bring in materials, newspaper clippings, and Internet research for inclusion in your binder.
