ADVERTISING POSTCARD ASSIGNMENT

Objectives:

  • To examine the way advertisers promote their products using the postcard medium.
  • To explore the effectiveness of communication, both visual and textual using this medium.
  • To brainstorm a postcard concept to promote a product, event, or concept.
  • To create a visually/textually appealing postcard using drawing or collage.
  • To create copy/text that adds interest, insight, or humor.
Postcard Evaluation
  • Who is the target market? (age, gender, etc.)
  • What are you promoting/advertising?
  • How does the card attract your attention?
  • Does the card effectively communicate or promote the product/event?
  • Is there text/copy/logo on the card?  Is it interesting, informative, humorous?
  • Do you like the card?  Why or why not?
Postcard Design Project
  • Do a thumbnail sketch of your card.
  • Have 2 classmates proof your card before beginning the final copy.
  • Using colored pencils, markers, or collage materials, complete the copy-ready ad.
  • Ad should be two-sided!!!
  • Mount your completed card on a piece of computer paper using tape on only one edge.  Everyone should be able to flip it over to see both sides.  Write your name and block number on the mounting.
Students are to self evaluate and get at least 3 other students to evaluate their card by completing the postcard evaluation (above)
