THE VIRGINIA STATE FAIR

All Marketing Classes
Grades: 10-12
Lesson Time: 2 hours

Since the DECA State Fair trip is in the beginning of the year, it serves as my first field trip with all my classes. To reinforce key terms and overall concepts of foundations and functions I have the students complete a scavenger hunt during their trip to the fair. This also helps with administrators who approve the field trip requests. It offers an actual lesson plan for the trip.

Objectives

  • Students will be able to see businesses that contribute to the VA economy
  • Students will work on teamwork and team decision making
  • Students will be able to see samples of pricing strategies, display advertising, packaging, and product promotions
  • Students will know exchange is the focus of Marketing
  • Students will be able to identify various relationships in Marketing
  • Students will identify examples of the 7 functions of Marketing and 4 Foundations of Marketing

What students will be able to do:

  • Students will be able to identify examples of effective marketing
  • Students will be able to work in teams
  • Students will observe selling, and effective target marketing
  • Students will be able to complete a general marketing scavenger hunt

Key Terms:

Identify the following functions of Marketing

  • Marketing
  • Selling
  • Function
  • Foundation
  • Teamwork

Task:
Scavenger Hunt Worksheet

I give the students their scavenger hunt packet on the bus. I have them select their our working partner, only 2 to a team. My students are also divided by chaperone groups, so within your group find a partner. Review the scavenger hunt requirements on the way to the fair. Instruct them to include both partner names on 1 hunt sheet. They can begin answering some of the questions even before arriving at the park.

The students must complete the scavenger hunt worksheet by the end of the day. I align 25 pts to the assignment, which is 5 days of participation to motivate them to complete the sheet. For non-attending students I create on an individual basis possible alternate projects based on the reason why they chose not to attend. Some students I have evaluate the State Fair Web site and look for examples of the marketing foundations and functions on the site itself.
