INTERNET MARKETING AND CAREER EXPLORATION

Grades: 11-12
Lesson Time: 2-45 minute periods/blocks

In the beginning of my career portfolio unit for all my courses I conduct a two or three day computer lab exercise to expose them to information available on the internet as well as narrow down their key career interests into a specific job field, industry and job title for the career portfolio unit.

There are seven key task areas I ask them to explore, each area having an assignment or task to complete.

Objective:

  • Use internet to find career information
  • Locate sites with sample resumes and cover letters
  • Find articles, resources information and access and use Internet
  • Print information

    Tasks:
  • Students will explore resources on the internet for career exploration
  • Students will use the computer
  • Students will research information
  • Students will analyze information and summarize their findings
  • Complete worksheet, adequately answer questions

Guided Practice

Student Task List: Career Exploration

1. Career Guidance: Print out 1 article of your choice to read ( limit to 2 pages long)
Use the following sites: careermag.com, monster.com, careermosaic.com

Task: On the back of the article
List name of website
Name of article
3 Sentence summary about article

2. Career Profiles: Using the following sites find information about your career
Field/ industry or occupation:
Awork.com, jobprofiles.com, TrueCareeres.com

Task: List the URL/Web site you found the best information about your career or job title

3. Job Search/Resumes: Careermag.com , Occupational Handbook, or US Department of Labor, hotjobs.com, salesJobs.com 4Work.com, JobBankUSA.com

Task: Find sample resumes, preferably in your field
Print two resumes: 1 Good vs. 1 Bad
On the back of each resume write why you think the resume is either good or bad. Comment on such things as format, spelling, style, language etc.

4. Job Hunting/Application Tools:
Search any Job Toolkit site listed below or a site you are familiar with

Task:
Print out a good sample cover letter for your profession or job title
Possible sites: Careermag.com Virtualresume.com careerpath.com
Knockemdead.com

5. Compensation:
Find a Compensation summary for your professional/occupational field
@ SalaryExpert.com or BestJobsUSA.com or jobsinthemoney.com or
wageweb.com

Task: In addition look up 3 additional Marketing professions and their salary range
On the attached sheet reference list what three professions and their average
salary ranges

6. Company Information:
Find 3 company information/bios at the following site: individual.com Or Hoover’s List or Business Wire

Task:Select 2 local company ( CVS, Food Lion, Hardees, Exxon, McDonalds)
Select 2 other national/private and public company to learn about: Harley Davidson, Microsoft, Victoria Secrets, Keeblers , Kellogg, Crayola
Print 1 company profile that you found interesting

7. Surfing the Internet for Career Assessment Resources:
Pick 5 of the following sites to just review and evaluate.

Task:
List on the attached paper the 5 sites you selected.
Print 1 job posting/description you found interesting.

Wetfeet.com
Job-interview.net

Project Task List Checklist
Students should complete the following items by the end of the second day

  • 1 article about industry, SPECIFIC profession or jobs in general (paragraph summary)
  • 2 resumes ( 1 good/1 bad) with paragraph summaries
  • 1 sample cover letter
  • 1 job description
  • list 3 professions and their average salary ranges
