Make the Student Competency Record Work for the Student, You,
Your Program, and Virginia Marketing Education!

Empower your students with each Marketing Education Course and Student Competency Record; collect the data your program and the state require, and incorporate the record into each student's Marketing Education portfolio.

I literally use the Student Competency Record as a course syllabus in this way.

After my welcome/introduction to the program, course, with reference to the competency record/syllabi, the students break into teams of 3-5 people. They are instructed to:

  • individually read the list of competencies of the course
  • discuss among the team how they wish to tackle the content
  • as a team, present orally a consensus rationale fof their team's alterations to the content sequence.

With an overhead projector and transparent overlay of the Student Competency Record, or on the computer with a downloadable SCR from the Virginia Career and Technical Education Curriculum Resource Center (www.CTEresource.org), consensually walk the class through the alterations and create a game plan fo the course that your students have chosen and you can accommodate.

Throughout the course, revisit the SCR with updates of the content you have covered. I personally allow the students to rate their own performance. I review the final document with reflection on grades... and make any adjustments before reproducing a final copy for the student, our program, our school division, and the state department.

The SCR is one of many documents our Marketing students have in their Marketing Education portfolio. This is one they really buy into. It says what they know and can do. They created it. :o)
