“MAY I TAKE YOUR ORDER?”

Materials
Needed:
Bread
Peanut Butter
Jelly
Plates or Napkins
Knives (not sharp)
Time Needed: Varies Depending on Number of Students
Instructions: Divide the class into groups. (3-5 each group)
Choose a volunteer from each group.
Explain to the students left in the groups that they will have the next 5 minutes to write down the instructions for making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
While the groups are coming up with the instructions, take the volunteers and explain to them that they are playing the role of outer space alien. The groups will be explaining to them the steps to make a peanut and butter jelly sandwich. Explain that they know English, but they are to only do what the group members tell them. (example; “Put some peanut butter on the bread.” Did they mention a knife?)
Once all the groups have written down the instructions collect them and then pass them out to different groups.
Have each group go through the instructions and the volunteer will do as told.
When all the groups have finished making their PB&J collect all the sandwiches.
Showcase the sandwiches.
Explain how the activity related to communication. Explain the role of the volunteer.
Ask the students what they learned from the exercise.
Bon Appetite! (take some pictures they may come in handy)
