Beginning a new job!

When I teach this unit, I assign partners to design a new employee handbook.  This way students really read their own handbook as well as their partner's.  Guidelines can vary but the following are included in mine:

  • cover with company information
  • welcome letter from president or owner
  • brief history of company
  • an organizational chart
  • rules for clocking in and out
  • leaving during business hours
  • personal calls
  • dress code
  • smoking
  • scheduling
  • taking time off
  • safety rules
  • crime prevention
  • employee purchases
  • employee discounts
  • employee parking
  • fire emergencies
  • termination of employment
  • friends visiting on the job
  • sexual harassment
  • eating
  • job duties of one job
  • job procedures
  • benefit package of a part-time worker
  • and draw a floor plan
After the project is completed I organize a "new employee" meeting and each student must present a rule to the class.
