New Breakfast Cereal Product Development
Project - Advanced Marketing
You are responsible for developing a NEW
CEREAL that will meet the needs of today’s consumer. Your product
cannot be currently available to the consumer. However, you can
use existing products in the development of your cereal. Think
in terms of other products that might be used to develop your new cereal,
such as candy. To develop your new breakfast cereal, follow the
steps in new product development.
1. General ideas- Check out the products
currently on the market, what is missing?
2. Screening ideas- Discuss our ideas
with other students, teachers, friends, and family. What do they
think of your ideas?
3. Developing the product- create the
cereal that you feel had the best responses. Don’t forget that
you need to develop the packaging!
4. Testing the product- Bring the product
in on the due date for testing.
5. Introducing the Product- Present your
product to the class as if we were buyers for Safeway and Giant, you
are selling us on stocking your product.
6. Evaluating Customer Acceptance- How
does your new cereal compare to your competition?
For your product development project,
you must:
1. Develop the product, the actual cereal
(100 points)
2. Develop the product packaging, including
the brand name, logo, directions for use, food and nutritional value,
promotional labeling (crosswords, games, etc.)- any information that
would be found on a cereal box.
3. Complete a two page typed summary that
clearly includes a separate cover page, with the cereal name and group
members. The two paged typed summary includes the following sections
: (20 points each)
· Target Market (age, gender, personal
interests, lifestyle, etc.)
· Product (how did you develop your
new product)
· Packaging (detailed description
of your cereal’s packaging)
· Competition (what cereals are
on the market that are your competition, and how will you address this)
· Marketing Mix (what will be the
price of your cereal? How will you promote it? In what stores will you
distribute the product? Why will you do these things?)
4. New Breakfast Cereal Product Development
Project Presentation.
With the buyers from Safeway and Giant
ad your audience, how will you convince them to buy! (100 points)
