DECA DAY WITH THE

Agenda | Advisor Notes | Registration

Four years running, the Washington Wizards have provided Virginia DECA with outstanding games and entertainment, not to mention the exceptional educational programs provided by the Wizards' organization. For those of you that attended last year, you'll remember that the December presentation was excellent, and we expect more of the same. Since we'll have a baseball game with the Nationals in the spring, be sure to attend. There won't be a second event as there has been in the past. Here's what we have so far...

At the 2006 event, students were selected to be "benchwarmers" during the warmups, and were permitted to sit on the bench during player warm-ups prior to the game. Several dozen were rotated in throughout the pre-game warm-ups.

On Friday, December 10, at 4:00 p.m., Virginia DECA took Washington D.C. by storm. Attending "DECA Day with the Wizards, the Wizards took on the New York Knicks in a thriller! The Wizards, after trailing most of the game, came on strong and hit the game winner with 7.2 seconds remaing. Yow! Prior to the game was a marketing presentation that included interactive talks with a player (Laron Proffitt), Wizards' Team President Susan O'Malley, coach Eddie Jordan, and former NBA star (and current television announcer) Phil Chanier. If you'd like to see anything else specific in the future, contact the Virginia DECA office and let me know. It was a great experience for everyone.

Virginia DECA members took center court at halftime, were introduced, met a player or two, and even met Lavar Arrington of the Washington Redskins. What a day!

Former NBA star Phil Chanier, Team President Susan O'Malley, and current Wizard Laron Proffitt present to Virginia DECA. They were spectacular! And, oh yeah. The game! Virginia DECA enjoyed a nail-biter Wizards' come from behind victory with 7.1 seconds remaining in the game!

Advisor Notes

There could be a "lull" from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., although the Wizards' organization has done an excellent job of filling this gap! They are providing college and vendor exhibitors, in addition to the pre-game warm ups. Consider taking full advantage of the exhibitors, then taking in a bite and enjoying the pre-game warm-ups. This should do a good job of filling the gap. Regardless, advisors, please be prepared for this and plan accordingly.

Also note that this is a Virginia DECA sponsored event. Therefore, please be sure that your students are DECA members before permitting them to attend.

The state 8 to 1 student to advisor ratio does not necessarily apply here, but please be sure that your students are adequately chaperoned based on your city/county's field trip guidelines. NO STUDENT MAY ATTEND AS PART OF OUR GROUP UNCHAPERONED.

Finally, please remind your students that during the presentation and the game, we are all representing Virginia DECA. While a basketball game is conducive to loudness, cheering, etc., please remind your students to maintain the appropriate level of decorum for a basketball game at all times, being courteous to other guests and patrons (as well as each other).
