While these pages
contain a LOT of places to seek job openings, do you really know what to
do once you've found the job you want? Of COURSE you do, unless you
were sleeping in class! But for those of you who might need a quick
refresher, or want to do even more "homework" on your company, look below
for information regarding general resources, researching a company, job
and personality tests, and other miscellaneous information such as salaries.
Career Resources
Career
Web resources
The Employment Guide's Career
Web is a decent job searching site, but has a very simple and easy to follow
set of career resources. Go to the bottom of the page and examine
the career inventory that answers the question, "Are you ready?"
Then be sure and visit the short and sweet articles from the experts.
If you want the quick, the down, and the dirty, this is a good place to
start.
Career
Development Manual
The University of Waterloo
has put out a masterpiece on the topic! Out of all of the career
prep sites--and I've read a few--this one is my absolute favorite!
It walks you logically through the entire process, step by step, without
missing a beat. It even starts by discussing attitudes, values, interests,
and a lot of other "soft" topics that so many sites do not address.
If you are willing to take the time to go through the entire site, start
with this one. Wish I had though of this format first.
Career
Path Resources
At first, Career Path Resources
looks like another job bank. Ho hum. But take a closer look.
Once you pass the three major headings in find a job, post a resume,
and managing your career, you find some very small, unassuming
headings such as Career Doctor, Salary Search, Certifications, Relocation
services, and other unique topics of interest. Take some time to
read through them. It's good stuff.
Career
Links
Career Links was created
by an undergraduate student at Old Dominion University (Go Blue!).
It's a pretty impressive collection of career links. Take the time
to go through them, see what you can use, then use them! And you're
going to love the boat.
Netcenter
Links
Another down and dirty site,
when you first get here, you're going to think that it's just another article
about finding that perfect job. Well, the article IS pretty good,
but the links within the article are even better. Take a salary
negotiation test, visit the net center career resource center, or get great
answer to tough but typical interview questions. Be sure and follow
the links...
The
Job Hunter's Bible
When you first visit this
site, you'll get the impression that "Fast Eddie's Used Cars" are the topic
of the day. I think there is a plug for a book, but the information
provided is worth the atmosphere. Look around, and with the exception
of his "not so up-to-date" Internet information, I think you'll find this
to be one of the more comprehensive job resources (or links to) that you're
going to find.
Jobs.com
This is a VERY student oriented
site, for both the high school and the college student. Lots of jobs,
and lots of information for students. Pay special attention, however,
to the "resumail" or e-resume wizard freeware. This is a free
software that you can download, and it will create an electronic resume
ready to be posted online. A very cool feature. I downloaded
a copy, and it was easy to use, and did a decent job. Definitely
worth a look.
Research a Company
Hoover's
Hoover's online business
network is probably the first place I would start if I wanted to research
a company for employment. Not only does it provide solid information
about most companies, it also provides current information, and
relevant recent articles about what is happening at the company.
Now that's news you can use.
ComFind
Comfind allows you to search
not only by company, but by company category, region, etc. A good
tool to use if you think you know what you want, just not who
you want it with. This can help you narrow down the roster as you
make those employment calls.
The
Riley Guide
Ok, remember when I told
you that the University of Waterloo had everything you always wanted in
a job resource site but were afraid to ask? Well, Margaret Dikel
has mad a liar out of me. Very respected in the world of job seeking,
this site is also everything you might want to know.
Jobs/Miscellaneous
Salary.com
How does your salary stack
up with your peers' salaries? Use the Salary Calculator or other
salary tools to help you figure it out.
Job
Star Salary Surveys
Attempting to help you earn
as much money as you possibly can, Job Star tells you how much your job
is worth, and what to do to get it. Job Star has a few fun quizzes
too, so take a peek.
Job
Options Salary Guide
You hear about all those
people who make more than you, but you say, "Well, sure they do, but they
live in New York City!" Job Options provides you with, amongst other
things, a cost of living calculator for anywhere in the country.
Very useful if you plan on moving out of your area. They also include
many other unique tools, and even profess to be able to save you thousand
of dollars per year in lost salary. And you know what? I think
they can. This site is a MUST visit site.
Occupational
Outlook Handbook
I know, I know. Your
teacher already made you look at this one. Well there was a reason
why--because it's more good stuff. This is the old standby, updated
annually. It's probably more information than you can handle, but
I'll be you'll find your answers here.
EDGAR
10K Reports
Need financial reports on
your "to be" company? Check out the highly respected Edgar reports.
Everything you want to know is there.
State
and local Government on the 'Net
You'll see more about this
site in the State and Local Resources section, but it bears repeating.
If you are moving and need info on another locality, check it out.
The
Riley Guide/Research
More Margaret Dikel, but
she's worth it! A list of links to help you find employers and help
you determine if they are companies you want to work for--her words.
Paycheck
City
Just can't seem to figure
out where all that money goes? Take a visit to Paycheck City!
You'll learn even more about your money than even your Marketing teacher
has shown you! This site utilizes more paycheck calculators than
you can shake a stick at. Give it a try.
Job/Personality Tests
The
Career Key
The Career Key is a very
cool and fun site to interact with. Take some personality type tests
and it will help to guide you toward the right career based on your talents
and interests. Who knows, maybe they'll even help you to think of
that dream career that you haven't though of yet!
Birkman
Work Quiz
Take the Princeton Review
career quiz, and theft swear that they'll help you wake up to your dream
job. Never dread work, but live it--love it. You're only a
quiz away!
The
Ethics Quiz
Would you cheat on a test?
Return change if the cashier gives you extra? Download an illegal
MP3 music file? Answer these and more questions that discuss just
how ethical you are in school and on the job. Thanks to Don Hurwitz,
Deep Creek HS for this one!
Virginia
View
Virginia View asks you to
download software to get the full effect, but it's worth it. One
of the most useful online employment tools/resources available, Virginia
View does has a small learning curve. But learn it, use it, then
thank Virginia Tech.
My
Future
Take a test on your career
interests, as well as your personality, and discover a career possibility
that maybe you haven't thought of before! While you're there, get
some help with your resume, learn all about colleges, and this is a terrific
source of information about the military.
Temperament
Just a quickie that will
make you think about your temperament. It's fun and it's quick, so
take it!
IQ,
Emotion, Memory, etc.
Lots of tests that will
address intelligence, reflexes, and soon even SATs and other standardized
tests. What I like most about these are the time allowances for each
test. I hate starting a test, only to discover it's going to take
another 45 minutes! Won't happen here.
IQ
This is a fun IQ test, doesn't
take long, and nearly everyone is a genius at the end! You go as
fast as your can, and at the end, your test length impacts your score.
They'll try and sell you a report at the end of the test. I'll leave
that up to you . I settled for the e-mailed report.
General
Intelligence/Mensa
Make sure you have 30 minutes
before you begin. This seems like a very legitimate test. A
bit trickier than some of the others, but maybe you'll get invited to join!
This
is FREAKY!
Ok, this one is meaningless,
but fun. You'll have to e-mail me to get the results.
