Endorsement Program in

Vocational Special Needs

This page outlines the approved add-on Endorsement Program in Vocational Special Needs in Virginia.  This endorsement is appropriate for career and technical education and special education teachers who teach in programs that are designed for students with disabilities or students who are academically deficient because they are economically or educationally disadvantaged.


This program requires 12 hours of course work that can be partially filled through previous course work in career and technical education and special education endorsement courses.

Our Virginia approved endorsement requirements:

  • Have or qualify for a Virginia Collegiate Professional or Postgraduate Professional License  

  • Evidence of satisfactory occupational experience, evidence of a minimum of two years or 4,000 hours of acceptable employment in business or industry  (If not must complete OTS 405 Directed Work Experience.)

Complete the following endorsement courses :

  • ENGL 110C, English Composition
  • OTED 401/501, Foundations of Career and Technical Educaiton
  • OTED 400/306/500, Instructional Systems Development
  • OTED 402/502, Methods in Occupational Education
  • OTED 408/508, Advanced Classroom Issues and Practices
  • OTED 603, Planning Issues for Vocational Special Needs Programs
  • OTED 604, Implementation and Administration of Vocational Special Needs Programs

Special Education endorsed teachers normally must take the following:

  • OTS 405, Directed Work Experience
  • OTED 603, Planning Issues for Voc Sp Needs Programs
  • OTED 604, Implementation and Admin of Voc Sp Needs Programs

OTED 603 and OTED 604 are scheduled as web-based courses over the summer session.  


 General schedule for these web-based courses:

  • Syllabus on web page
  • Assignment/explanation on web page
  • Schedule on web page
  • Weekly email communication required by Thursday of each week
  • Assignments turned in as completed

Registration:

Distance learning students may register for these courses at the ODU Site Director's Office at any community college in Virginia.  When the summer session courses are listed these two courses are listed on the "Web Courses" listing of Leo.
