Guidelines for Writing Assignment

A. Requirements:

1. Format:
length- approximately 6-7 printed pages each
printed- good quality printer; font - Times New Roman 12, double spaced
organization- title page, introduction, appropriate subdivisions of main body of text, literature cited

2. References:
quantity- minimum of 10, including at least 5 primary references for each report quality- must be good scientific references (examples of sources that can be used but will not count toward the required number are newspapers and non-scientific magazines such as Time ); the only allowable web sources are on-line journals.

3. Literature Cited: In alphabetical order and in the style of Ecology

examples:
Smith, B.A. 1990. A study of root growth in northern forests. Journal of Root Research 56: 125-135.

Jones, J.A., B.W. Brown and B.A. Smith. 1995. Root Growth. Academic Press. New York, New York.

4. Citations: author-date style (see Ecology); no footnotes

examples:
Roots grow well in sandy soils (Smith 1990).
Roots grow faster than shoots (Jones et al. 1994).
Forests have more than 1000 kg/ha of root biomass (Jones and Smith 1989).

5 . General Tips:
Avoid using direct quotes; paraphrase.
Use proper grammar, including complete sentences. Scientific names are in italics; do not capitalize common names.

B. Basis for Grade:

1. Appropriate topic
2. Depth of paper content (extent of research)
3. Quality and number of references
4. Required formats
5. Proper grammar and good writing style
6. Overall presentation
