ODU Main Campus

Professor

My twin brother and I were born around the middle of the last century in Norfolk, VA and I spent most of my early life there. I attended Granby High School and East Carolina University where I received a BA degree in Psychology and another in Philosophy. My studies at East Carolina continued until I received a Master's degree in General Experimental Psychology. I then taught for three years at Old Dominion University before returning to get my Ph.D. in Social Psychology at Miami University. Since that time, I have taught at Old Dominion. The courses I offer most often are Social Psychology at the graduate and undergraduate level. I have been developing this web-based Social Psychology course over the last three years.

I currently live in the Olde Towne historic district of Portsmouth, VA with my Springer Spaniel, Crew. As the name implies, Olde Towne is a very old neighborhood, dating back to the 1700s. My house was built in 1880 and is the newest house on the block!

As you might have guessed, my primary recreation is Cowboy Action Shooting. This is a rapidly growing sport where shooters compete against time, shooting period (1865-1898) firearms or replicas and wearing clothing appropriate to that time in the Wild West.

Hi everyone! I am excited about helping with the Social Psychology internet class. Like many of you this is the first experience with an internet class so I'm interested to see how this works. I can see from the recent bulletin board postings that some of you are taking the class online so it does not interfere with partying.

Like Dr. Gillen, I was born here in Norfolk (but it wasn't until the mid -70's) and have been here most of my life. I attended Lake Taylor High School and then left Norfolk for four years to go to Charlottesville where I attended the University of Virginia. After receiving my BA degree in Psychology and Biology, I returned home. I was not sure what I wanted to do next so I started taking graduate classes at ODU and received my Master's degree in Psychology several years ago. While pursuing my Master's degree, I started doing research with another ODU psychology professor, Dr. Bryan Porter. Most of the research has been traffic related such as red light running, tailgating, and pedestrian safety. In addition to doing research, the past couple of years I have been teaching Introduction to Psychology so I'm primarily used to dealing with freshmen.

I live about 15 minutes away from school in a house built in the 1940's. It is definitely not as old as Dr. Gillen's but I still spend a fair amount of time restoring and repairing both the inside and outside. In my spare time I like to collect jewelry, cook, travel, and attend estate auctions. My family is really into auctions. I've had a great time introducing my boyfriend to the auction scene and now have a hard time keeping him away from them.

Biology & Psychology

Hi everybody!:) My name is Michelle Adams. I live in Hampton but I was born in Connecticut and I've lived all over the country. I am 25 years old and I will be married to my wonderful husband Gregg for 6 years on February 14th, Valentine's Day. We were married at a local radio station's mass wedding with 62 other couples. He is very supportive of me and my educational goals. I will be graduating in Dec 2002, the first person in my family, with a double major in biology and psychology. I just decided at the end of last semester to change my minor in Psychology to a double major. I love both fields and my area of interest pulls highly from both disciplines. I am interested in animal behavior, especially communication between a mother and her offspring. After graduation I plan to pursue a Master's and hopefully a PhD at a yet undetermined school. This is a tough decision for me as my family is spread all over the country. My father was stationed in the local area when I was in high school. He retired from the Coast Guard in Yorktown, so my family was here for many years. My mother passed away in 1997 and father remarried in 1999 and moved to Alabama. My brother, 2 1/2 years younger then me, joined the army and is currently stationed in Korea. His has 2 wonderful sons, 3 1/2 and 1 1/2, that live in Newport News which I spoil rotten. This is a hard thing to do sometimes with my schedule. I'm going to school full time, plus I have a wonderful internship with ODU's Center for Quantative Fisheries Ecology. Plus in my other free time I am a kitchen consultant for the Pampered Chef, were I get to introduce people to wonderful kitchen tools. Well, I better stop now I've probably rambled on too long already. I look forward to this class and getting to read everyone else's bios.:)

Business Management

I am 21 years old and currently a senior at ODU. I attended East Carolina University when I was a freshman, but later returned because I was having way too much fun. After four years of continuous coffee drinking and many sleepless nights, I am finally going to graduate in May 2002. I am not married and the closest things I have to children are my two dogs. Falco, a whippet, and Isis, a rat terrier, came to my apartment both as puppies last December. I have a rather unusual job. Ever since I was little, I wanted to be a clown in the circus. Although I never quite made to the circus, I've been a clown for the last 4 years entertaining children at their birthday parties and goofing off at the Tides baseball games. I really love my job because they are very few bad days in my line of work. I get a lot back from my work just when a child smiles. The idea of having to quit clowning around in order to take up a desk job is rather scary, but I see myself in years to come always being a clown on the side to keep my sanity in the business word. I am currently an intern in the Human Resource Department at the City of Norfolk. This is my first real job in a business environment. I'm hoping this will confirm my previous desire to work in a HR department. If this is the case, I am going to return shortly upon graduation to begin my Master's degree.

Nursing

Hello Everyone! My name is Kimberly Ambrose. I am a mother of two boys, ages twelve and eight. I was born and raised in Illinois until the age of 10 when my mother remarried. After the age of ten I moved around a lot due to my stepfather's job. I joined the Navy after graduating high school and spent 8 ½ years on active duty here in the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area. I decided being in the Navy was affecting my family life too much so I decided to get out and go back to school. I spent four years going to school at Tidewater Community College part time and transferred to Old Dominion in the fall of 2001. I am in the Nursing Program at ODU working towards a BSN. My minor is Psychology. As well as going to school full time, I continue to work full time as a home daycare provider, which I have been doing for the last six years. I am a member of the Naval Reserves where I continue to use my knowledge as an electrician. I am very active in my children's lives and devote approximately ten hours a week to scouting and sports activities. I am a Cub Scout den leader for my youngest son and a Boy Scout leader for the oldest son's troop. My family pets include a Bearded Dragon, two cats, two hamsters, and a dog. I am taking this class because I have a strong interest in psychology and I will fulfill one more requirement for my minor.

Communication

My name is Danielle Armstrong and I am a communication major with an emphasis is public relations and a minor in Psychology. I really love ODU. I think it's a great school and I am seriously considering obtaining my masters from the University…If it doesn't take much time to complete. I have a cat named Chadoe. She's a sweet animal and I am recently single. I had a boyfriend. I am 26 years old, and I am a serious student. This is my first on line course and I am a little interested in seeing how it goes, because I've never experienced anything quite like this. This is definitely new technology. After I graduate from school I would like to eventually work for myself and start my own Public Relations Company. I live in Hampton but I am originally from the Bay Area in California, Although I was raised in Alaska because my father was in the Airforce. I come from a relatively small nuclear family I have a brother a mother and a father (whom are both still together). I have no children myself and I have never been married. I am however looking though J. I want nothing more right now than to graduate from college, because then I feel as though I could actually start living my life. Being as though I just broke up with my boyfriend I don't have very much else to say, so I hope this is more than enough information for you all. Good luck with your studies.

Math

Hello my name is Jason Arzola and I am 26. I have lived in Virginia Beach most of my life. I went to Iowa State University for my freshman year. I transferred back to ODU and finally graduated in May of 2000, after several program switches and hundreds of "add/drops". One time I had so many "add/drops" that I overloaded the computer. I had to call and have the system reset. I taught high school math for a little while but I really didn't like that. I now work at a college. Basically I still instruct people in math. I am working on a second degree in math. I am still trying to figure out what I want to do with my life. I am the oldest of three children. I suppose I have typical first-born traits. I like to read. I am trying to learn how to play chess. I played cello in elementary school and regret often that I still don't. I have starting playing tennis. It is fun but frustrating that I can't keep the ball in the court. I like to watch movies but rarely go to the movie theatre. I had a red corvette but foolishly got rid of it. I want to get a German Shepard. I have a tattoo of a cobra on my arm. I like the watching the Simpsons. I like to fish. I like to eat out. I'm definitely a "Meatasaurus". In fact, I don't think I've met a moving creature I didn't like to eat. I've tried armadillo, alligator, buffalo, rabbit, and even cow tongue. I am a water purist, which is to say I only drink water. Aside from a brief (less than 2 hours) stay in Bermuda, I have never really traveled anywhere. Hopefully when I get where I am going I will have some resources to visit some new places.

Accounting

My name is Roshonda. I am a very quiet and private person unless I know you really well. I was born and raised on the Eastern Shore of VA in a town called Accomac. For those of you who have the slightest idea where that is, it is located on the other side of the Chesapeake Bay about 30 minutes from the MD/VA state line. Yes, it is the country. We have no malls, no bowling alley, nothing fun really. It's just plain old boring, which is one of the reasons I ended up here in Norfolk. In my free time (when I'm not working or going to classes), I enjoy reading books and poetry. Poetry is my absolute favorite pastime. I hope that one day I will actually be able to write something worth sharing with others. I also like listening to music, talking, shopping, bowling, playing video games, and just being with my friends and family. I have a big family so family means a lot to me. I graduated in the top ten from Nandua High School in 1999. I hope to graduate a semester early from ODU in December, but I may just graduate on time next May. Upon graduation, I plan to go to graduate school so I will be able to get my CPA license. I hope to one day own my own accounting firm. I know that sounds like a big dream but one day in the near future you all are going to see my company in the yellow pages and say, "I had an online psychology class with her." I have never taken an online course before, but this looks like it is going to be interesting and maybe even fun so I will pray for the best. I wish you all good luck.

Nursing

Hello, My name is Leslie. I'm not having too much fun with this bulletin board stuff, but I am getting it together. I am in the Nursing program with a double minor in exercise science and psychology. I am also in the Navy. I was an Aviation Mechanic for ten years. Now I am just a student at NROTC in the officer program MECP. It's harder than I thought it would be; especially with two children who need help on there own homework. It's all fun. I've made it this far and I have to keep on pushing! I will be substitute teaching with the Virginia Beach Public Schools on the days I don't have class. If anyone out there is looking an opportunity to work when they feel like it for 65 dollars a day, It is a good part time job. All you need is an associates or eqivallent. Orientations are held periodically. Just call the resource department and ask to be put on the list. I hope to substitute for my son one day! J When I substitute, hopefully I will be getting a call from my new agent. Another thing I do is occasionally model and act. I've been doing that off and on since I was a little girl. I can't do too much of it these days. I'm just too busy and that is not on my priority list. When I have time, I like to spend it outdoors with my family. Summer months are my favorite. I love the beach! Actually, I love to splash in any water. Well, almost any. My children like to go to the beach and ride bikes with me and my husband. When we have even more time off (semester break), we like to vivit family in Massachusetts, New York, and Florida. Well, that's enough about me. I will look forward to reading about the rest of you. Good luck to all this semester and the rest to come!

Human Services Counseling

This is my second semester at ODU and I am actually enjoying taking classes through the teletechnet system. I am 38 years old, have a 5-year-old daughter who just started kindergarten this past fall. My daughter's name is Caitlin and we have learned that kindergarten is quite an experience! We live in a rural community about 30 minutes from the PHCC site and I work in Martinsville. I am employed by Piedmont Community Services, which provides mental health, mental retardation, and substance abuse services. This has been a rewarding career and I enjoy helping those less fortunate than myself. I chose this type of work and degree because at one time I found myself in need of some counseling due to poor personal choices. I was not made to feel ashamed and I was not judged because of my poor choices. I want to give back to the community and to those who helped me through a tough time. I hope to be working on my internship by summer of 2003. I am taking five classes this semester plus working full-time. Finishing college has always been one of my dreams and I am so thrilled to be able to pursue this dream. In addition, if it were not for my wonderful mother, who does so much for my daughter and I - this dream would not be possible!

Health Sciences

Hello, my name is Lenore Baydid. I am a currently a senior at Old Dominion College. This is my second year doing teletechnet. My major is Health Sciences and minoring in Human Services Counseling. My long term goal is to try to become a patient advocate in a hospital. I am residing in Bainbridge Island, Washington. It is east of the Olympics and right by Seattle. I have to take a 30 minute ferry ride to Seattle, Washington. I graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1989 and three months later I moved to West Covina, California to attend a junior college called Mount San Antonio College. I lived there for seven years. I moved back to Washington State in 1995. I attended nursing school there for a year and then transferred to Olympic College. At Olympic College I went one semester of nursing school and decided that it wasn't for me. I decided to go into Health Sciences at ODU. This spring is my last semester here. In my spare time out of school, I enjoy traveling. I recently went to Hawaii in September…I was one of the many who could not fly out because of the WTC attack. It was very interesting. I also have traveled to Japan, Korea, and San Diego. I also am a single mother of a six year old boy. He is in the first grade. I also try to spend as much time with him during my spare time. One day out of the week I volunteer at his school and also go on field trips. I truly enjoy the outdoors. During the summer months, I try to go camping and teach my son about the nature. I also love to bike ride. I used to be an avid runner until my knee gave out about a year ago. Since then I have turned to walking. But, that can be hard since Washington is known for their rain. I read many books and my favorite author is Nicholas

Psychology

Hi! My name is Amber Beardsley and I am a junior at Old Dominion University. I am majoring in Psychology, and I plan on mastering in Early Childhood Education. I was born in Omaha, Nebraska, but I spent most of my time growing up in Newport News, Virginia, where my parents still live. I have an older brother who serves in the US Air Force and is stationed in Texas with his beautiful new wife. I live on campus now, and I am a second year RA in Whitehurst Hall. I am anxiously awaiting and planning for my wedding, which will take place this June. My fiancée is a graduating senior in the School of Engineering (at ODU). We have been dating for over 4 years now and are both very excited about our upcoming marriage. Aside from school, planning a wedding, and being a RA, I also work at the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters as a Child Life Assistant. Being in the hospital is scary for many children and it is part of my job to make their hospital stay a more positive experience through such things as playing with them, taking activities to them if they cannot get out of bed, and sometimes just spending time with a child who lacks strong family support. I love my job and I hope to be a Child Life Specialist one day. I am overall a very happy and loving person and I try to enjoy life to the fullest. I am a Christian and my faith, love, and relationship with Christ is the most important thing in my life. I am excited about this semester and I hope that taking a course on

Hi my name is Jenn. I am a 20-year-old junior at ODU. I have lived in the Tidewater area all of my life. I love the beach and warm weather. I grew up in Chesapeake, VA and graduated from Deep Creek High School in 1999. I attended James Madison University for one year but decided it wasn't right for me, so I transferred back home and am now in my second year at Old Dominion. Even though everyone says I am crazy for coming back here, I am much happier. I currently work at the Bank of Hampton Roads as a Teller. I have been there for a year and a half. Tellering is not something I want to do forever, but right now it is paying the bills. I am also president of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. It keeps me busy but it is definitely worth it. I do not have any children, only an 8-year-old half brother that I spend as much time with as possible. I am majoring in Psychology with a minor in Human Services Counseling. I am thinking about double majoring, just haven't declared it yet. I hope to one day have my own practice working with children, primarily autistic children. This summer I plan on doing therapy work with two autistic children in Virginia Beach. Autism is a disorder that I have always been interested in. After starting my career I plan on getting married and having children.

My name is Shanna Alayne Black, and I was born on October 4, 1978. I was raised in the small town of Walterboro, South Carolina, which is located about 45 minutes inland from Charleston. I have one sister, Meredith, and one brother, Nicholas. My parents, Lou Ann and David Cobb were very actively involved in our lives growing up. We used to take family trips, bike rides, and do lots of fun activities together. My whole family is interested in sports, so naturally, my brother, sister, and I were all involved in sports growing up. My brother played baseball and soccer, and my sister and I played fast pitch softball. My sister was the catcher, and I was the pitcher, and we are only 1 year apart in age, so we were always on the same team. We both grew to be pretty good at the game and were asked to play on traveling summer teams, where we met and were recruited by many college coaches as we got closer to graduating from high school. I graduated from high school in June of 1996 in the top five of my class and went on athletic and academic scholarship to Augusta State University to play fast pitch softball as a pre-med major. I moved out of the house and into my first apartment and got a job as a research assistant at the Medical College of Georgia. I was in Augusta for a year and a half before marrying my husband, Elvis Presley Black. He is in the Coast Guard, so we had to move. The first location was Groton, Connecticut, and then here to Chesapeake, Virginia. We bought our first house, and we have one son named Tyler, who is 3 years old. He was diagnosed with leukemia at 17 months, so we have been undergoing chemotherapy treatments ever since. This delayed my return to school. Now, I am in my second semester back at school. I'm majoring in nursing. It is a lot harder the second time around with family, work, and school, but it will be worth it. I took 23 credit hours last semester, which amounted to 7 different classes and 2 labs. Needless to say, I did not sleep from August until December and I will never do that again. This semester is much more manageable, and I'm looking forward to

History

In August of 2000, I graduated from ODU and received a Bachelor's in Business with an emphasis in Information Technology. I began my career last January as a data engineer at the Automark Group. My company creates and maintains the websites for thousands of car dealerships across the US and also in the United Kingdom. My role is to get the correct inventory to these websites and to troubleshoot and rectify problems as they arise. It is very challenging at times but there is nothing else that I would rather do. For the future I hope to become a certified Oracle Database Administrator and I plan to begin that training either this coming fall or in January of next year. I am currently pursuing a Bachelor's in History at ODU. After this semester I will only have one more class to take to achieve that goal. I do not plan to utilize this degree per se in my career but, rather, I am seeking a history degree only because I love history. A friend once asked me why I studied history. To her, it is a waste of time because history is the past. To me, yesterday is, in fact, what determines tomorrow. I will never believe that the ability to see the connections is a waste? I have been fortunate enough to see for myself some of the places that I have read about: England, France, Switzerland and Italy. There are so many other places that I want to visit, Australia, Germany, and Greece, to name a few. I cannot think of a better way to spend my time than to meet and learn about the people of cultures different than my own.

Hi! My name is Ben Brown. I am 24 years old and happily married to my wife Kathy. We were married this past October and are having a blast. I grew up in Franklin County, Virginia, and graduated from Franklin County High School in 1995. I then attended Virginia Western Community College where I graduated in May 1997 with an A. A. S. in Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology. After attending VWCC I was hired as an Electronics Technician for Tele-Path Instruments in Salem, Virginia in June of 1997. After a merger or two and four name changes I was subsequently downsized this past October. Yes that's right I was laid off two days after I was married. Fortunately soon thereafter I was hired by KelTech, Inc. in Roanoke doing pretty much the same job. I will finish my B. S. this August and cannot wait. I am still not really sure what I would like to do after graduation. My interests include the Titanic, sports, spending time with my beautiful wife and our two turtles. We want to get a Beagle puppy, but are settling for our two cute little turtles for now. My wife and I went to Las Vegas for our Honeymoon and absolutely fell in love with it. We stayed at the Bellagio, which is the setting for the new movie "Ocean's Eleven." We both love to travel and cannot wait to get back to Vegas. I am the youngest of three sons and am the only one of the three that went into a technical field. My oldest brother is a Financial Reporting Manager and my other brother is an English Education graduate. I have to take this course as a requirement for my degree and I look forward to a great semester.

Psychology

I have never been any good at writing about myself, but here it goes. Believe it or not, I was born with a twin in Boston, Massachusetts. . It was there that I also grew up and attended high school. Besides my twin brother I have two older brothers and a younger sister. The oldest is 31, the second oldest is 27, my twin and I are 22, and my younger sister is 19. Many people ask me how I ended up at Old Dominion University. The first reason was that I wanted to go away from home for a while, and with an older brother in Northern Virginia I had someone close enough if necessary. I originally intended to go into the physical therapy field, and Old Dominion has a very fine program. However, shortly after I had gotten down here and done a semester I had changed my mind. I have been at Old Dominion for four years this spring, and I am planning to graduate in the fall of 2002. I have made many of great friendships here, and hopefully all of which will not end upon graduation. It is kind of funny because a good friend of mine is in this class, and I didn't know it until I saw her name on the students list. I would also like to say hello to Amber, and I too am looking forward to you and David's wedding. I don't really have much free time, but when I do I enjoy listening to music, and playing horseshoes.

Psychology/Criminal Justice

I will begin by telling you that I live in Elizabeth City, NC and I love it! I am originally from Oakley, CA. North Carolina is completely different than northern California. Oakley is about 65 miles outside of San Francisco, and is completely in the middle of no-where! I like a lot because it is so close to the mountains; in fact you can see the mountains ( Sierra Nevada's ) from the kitchen windows. My father has taken me bear hunting at his cabin in Bear Valley, which is about 45 minutes from Donner Pass which is were the famous Donner Party was stranded. It is so beautiful and peaceful there. I am sure you are wondering why I am not in California instead of Elizabeth City, NC, well my husband is in the Coast Guard and is stationed in ECity until 2005. Actually we love it here the farm country is breathtaking, and the ocean is great. We are in the middle of purchasing a house on the Albemarle Sound , soon we'll fishing off our own back yard! Enough about where I live and on to how I live; I am a full time student and mother of a wonderful 2.5 year old, I also work part-time in a local restaurant called Mulligan's (which isn't really like work at all!) The people in North Carolina are so friendly and relaxed. I am majoring in Psychology and Criminal Justice. I have taken on-line classes before and I find that they are just as interactive as classrooms. Dr.G seems very willing to help everyone have a great semester. Well I suppose I should wrap this up. I could keep on writing, but this should be kept short.

Like Dr. Gillen, I was born in the middle of the last century. I have spent most of my life in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. I was born in Norfolk, grew up in Virginia Beach and now live in Chesapeake. I reared two sons and did a pretty good job if I say so myself. Although there were some times, especially the teenage years, when I wasn't sure either of us would live through it. They have now grown into fine young men and have made me a proud grandmother, one boy (4) and one girl (5) and one due in June 2002. I am married to a retired Marine. We have a cat and a dog. We are disgusting pet owners and baby them as if they were children. Come to think of it, the dog and the cat get away with a lot more than my children ever did. I am currently working as a mortgage loan officer and have been in this field for over 10 years. I previously worked in consumer credit. I am what I consider a perpetual student. I have been working on my undergraduate degree since 1982. I only attend part-time. I expect to graduate December 2002. I am sure I will return to college in some form in Spring 2003 whether it is another undergraduate degree or some masters program. In my spare time, I am active in my church. I enjoy whitewater rafting, sewing and cross-stitch. I am involved in a project now where we are cross-stitching the names of everyone who died (except the terrorist) as a result of the September 11th attacks in the shape of an American Flag. I also volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and have worked on three homes.

Psychology

I was born in Wilmington, Delaware on September 21, 1980. After living there for about 11 years my family relocated to Richmond, Virginia. I am a 21-year-old senior who will be graduating in May. I am majoring in Psychology with a minor in Human Service Counseling. After taking a very short break, I plan on continuing my education. I want to gain a Masters in counseling and eventually a Ph.D. I am looking into Virginia Commonwealth University and ODU's grad programs. One day I will have my own practice working with youth. After all, the children are our future! I have one sibling and she will be graduating from high school in June. So that is two graduations my family will be attending. Currently, I reside on Old Dominion's campus. And I must say I am very pleased with my stay at ODU. I do not think I could have picked a better university to attend. When I am not studying or volunteering I enjoy going to the movies, out to eat, shopping, traveling, listening to music and relaxing with close friends. My favorite restaurant is Olive Garden and Red Lobster. I have too many favorite movies to name, but I see at least 2-4 movies a month in the theater. This past spring break I visited Montego Bay, Jamaica. My stay was amazing! There are many other places I would love to visit. This is my first web course and I think it is going to be very interesting to see everyone interact through today's technology. Good luck to everyone!

Criminal Justice

Hello, as noted before my name is William Clemons, I am 27 years old. I was born and raised in Roanoke, Virginia. My parents divorced when I was a child and, like many kids of divorced parents, my brother and I bounced back between the two. After high school my brother and I joined the Army, I served three years at Fort Stewart, GA, while deploying twice to Egypt. I chose to not to pursue the military as a career, because of the deployments that often occur in that line of work. The second time I went to Egypt my son, Devan, was seven months old when I returned he had changed a lot, as children of that age do. This was the deciding factor in my decision. After my military service I went back to work fulltime as a civilian in the retail side of the furniture industry, and back to school, putting my Veteran's benefits to good use. I graduated in 2000 from Wytheville Community College with an A.A.S. in Police Science. While obtaining my education my interest in the law was sparked. After graduating from ODU I plan to apply to several law schools in the state. I love a challenge. I realize that goal is going to be very tuff. But, I have confidence in myself. My interests, when I have time outside of school, are, spending time with my family, NASCAR, history, books (John Grisham), and movies. I would love to visit several European countries, while in Egypt I was fortunate to see the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx on two occasions; this has sparked the desire to see other ancient lands and landmarks. I look forward to this semester at ODU, I am sure I will learn a lot in the next few months.

I was born in a small town in West Virginia. I grew up with two wonderful supportive parents, and all kinds of family around me. I graduated from high school in 1998, and moved by myself to Abingdon shortly there after. I attended Virginia Highlands Community College for three years, where I received my Associates Degree in Police Science. My major is Criminal Justice with a minor in Psychology. I hope to go into the FBI. This has been my dream ever since the first time that I saw the movie "Silence of the Lambs". I wanted to be Clarice, and find the bad guy. I have two jobs, one as a customer service associate and another an assistant to a woman who owns a gift company. I have a few hobbies but the one that I am most passionate about is skiing. Where I grew up we had a ski resort called Winterplace, it was two minutes from where I lived. I made it on to the snow for the first time when I was five and have never looked back since. I even worked there all thru high school so that I could ski for free. I am not married and I have no children, but I borrow my nieces and nephews as much as possible, because I believe that children keep you honest. Well that's my life, boring as it may seem.

Human Service Counseling

I am currently a 26 year old junior at ODU majoring in Human Service Counseling and my minor is Psychology. After working in the Human Services field with both children and adults with physical, mental and emotional disabilities for five years, I decided to return to school to obtain my degree. I lived in Norfolk for about two years where I was involved in a Homeless Prevention Program for children in the Brighton Rock area in Portsmouth. I decided that this was the area I was most interested in working in. Living in a somewhat small town, Danville Virginia, with limited resources for the homeless, one shelter, I hope to use my education and on hand learning experiences to implement such programs as those in Norfolk and Portsmouth in my home town after graduation. I am an active volunteer for Special Olympics Area 7 and tutor third grade children in reading and SOL testing materials. I am an only child, and a daddy's girl. I have no children of my own and at this time I am single. Throughout my life I have had many life altering experiences which I feel have made me be able to relate to people well. I have walked in their shoes and can understand how they feel. I feel that this is a necessity to be a good Human Service worker. I am looking forward to this class this semester and hope to gain knowledge to help obtain my occupational dreams.

I was born in Orange, New Jersey in 1981. I lived in New Jersey for 10 years then my family moved to Virginia Beach, where we have been living ever since. I graduated with honors from Ocean Lakes High School when I was 17 and started attending college at Virginia Wesleyan College. I attended VWC for two years and I just recently transferred to ODU this fall. I plan on graduating next spring and continuing on to law school in New Jersey. I really want to attend Seton Hall Law School in Newark, New Jersey. After law school, I would like to be a criminal defense lawyer and hopefully go on to be a judge in New Jersey. In October, my boyfriend and I adopted a 7 week old Rottweiler from the Virginia Beach SPCA. He was dropped off at the SPCA with three others in his litter because the owner forgot to get their tails docked at three days old. No one wanted to buy the puppies with their tails. He is now four months old and he already weighs 55 pounds! I also work part time at a retirement home.

My mom is a botanist ad dad is a nuclear physicist both working for the UN. I have a 26-year-old brother who is teaching at Berkeley College in California and head of a genetics research lab there. I have been working for United Parcel Service close to four years. The one thing I would love to do 24/7 is play and spend time with my son "Tristin". He just turned 5 in August, and he is my best friend. We have a great relationship and if I didn't have him, there wouldn't be an autobiography because he is my life. I have spent thousands of dollars fighting his mom in court, and back in May she finally realized that Tristin was my main concern. Tristin's mom and me are very close now, and we really respect each other. I really feel that her and me are very much closer now that we are divorced and consider each other close friends of one another. I bought my son an 81 jeep CJ7 that I have been rebuilding for when he gets old enough to drive. I thought it would take a long time to jack it up and fix it up, but it's just about done and everyone says it is a hell of a vehicle. Well, when you talk about me, you have to talk about my son. We are inseparable and that is one thing that I know is never going to change. I LOVE

He will tell you that he is my "Piglet". My niece Kasey, age seven, and my nephew, Nicholas, 15 months, are my husband's brother's children. I enjoy spending time with them and love them all very much. My hobbies are walking, playing tennis, reading and working puzzles. I try to find time to participate in some of these activities when I am not at work or attending classes.

I arrived in Portsmouth Naval Hospital on March 11, 1962. Born to the BEST parents in the world, I am, at most times, a well-adjusted happy individual. I have two sisters that also live in Va. Beach. The importance of family was always central in our lives, with frequent visits to aunts, uncles and grandparents in North Carolina. Even after my sisters and I got married and moved out, we still went home every week for Sunday dinner. I have been blessed with a wonderful husband of 18 years and a terrific 12 year-old daughter. We enjoy boating and have property on Lake Gaston that we plan to build a weekend getaway. It is a beautiful place. I also enjoy working in my yard; I just love to cut grass, and plant flowers! There is nothing like a burst of sunny daffodils after a long dreary winter! I currently work full-time as a bookkeeper for ESG Enterprises; I have been here for just over 15 years. ESG is a family owned business, and they are a great family. They are unbelievably generous, and allow me to come and go as necessary for my classes. I started back to school in late 1997, and just completed an associate degree in social sciences at TCC. Though I am working toward a bachelor degree in Psychology, I am still not sure of my future plans to utilize the degree. I went back to school with only the intention of becoming educated. I felt it was time to expand by mind not just my waistline!! I have thoroughly enjoyed all of my classes. The entire experience has been great, I think I better understand those individuals that have become perpetual students!

My name is Dawn Edmunds. I am 34 years old and a Norfolk State University student majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies with concentrations in Psychology, Sociology, and Business. I am cross registered for this course through the Tidewater Consortium. I am also employed full time at NSU. I am a full time student and a single mother of two boys ages 13 and 10. I am from Norfolk. I graduated from Lake Taylor High School in 1986. After high school I joined the Army and serve for eight years. Whale in the Army, I was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany for 3 years and Fort Lee, VA for 4 years. The military was interesting but I did not want to make a career of it. I decided to come back to Norfolk because I wanted to go to school and I wanted the support of my family. I started school in 1995 and went for 3 semesters. At the time I was going to school full time and working part time. Then I decided to work full time and go to school part time. After a couple of semesters, I became overwhelmed and withdrew from school in 1997. At that time, I was Psychology with an Early Childhood Endorsement major. Last year, I decided to come back to school and changed my major to Interdisciplinary Studies. Once I changed my major I only had 36 credit hours left to complete my degree compared to 64 credit hours under my previous major. Needless to say, Interdisciplinary Studies was the better choice for me. I also decided to go to school full time in order to make the most use of my military veterans benefits and financial aid. This time around I am very focused and determined. I feel that my life has been put on hold. Once I complete my degree, I will have completed one of my life goals. I will be graduating in December 2002. I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. I am considering pursuing my master's degree. I am torn between psychology and sociology. I still haven't quite decided what I want to be when I grow up.

Hello, I am a Military Brat. Well, Army to be exact. For those of you who do not know what that means, the children of soldiers are called military brats. Now depending on the branch of the military, one could be more specific and be called (the branch) brat. I am an Army brat and have been around the world. When I am asked, "Where are you from?" I say Richmond, Va. This is where I was born, but I have lived in many places because of the Army. I have lived in Hawaii, Oklahoma, Virginia (of course), Maryland, Massachusettes, and Germany. I actually graduated High School in Germany. I also completed my freshman year of college there at the University of Maryland. They have a campus there. I am currently trying to finish my four-year degree so I can teach. Right now I am a substitute teacher for many schools in my county and I coach. I have been subbing for almost four years now. I have been at every level, elementary, middle, and high. I am hoping to get four-year degree this fall, so I can be hired full time. I would like to pursue a Masters in Education (from ODU possibly), teach high school math, and continue coaching. I currently coach two high school teams and a middle school team. I coach Girls Basketball and Track for the high school and Boys Basketball for the middle school. I also tutor Math, English, and German. Yes, I can speak German. I lived there for 7 years. The first time I went I lived in Stuttgart, Germany. I was there for fourth, fifth, and sixth grade. The second time I went, we lived in Augsburg Germany. I was there for tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade. I use to speak it well, but now I am a little rusty. I can still understand it and since I tutored a student last semester, I have begun

Human Services Counseling

I have been a distant learning student with ODU for two years now. When I entered the program I entered as an Interdisciplinary Studies student. I was in that program for three semesters. As I continued in that program of study I learned that that was not what I wanted to do. So I changed my major last semester and now here I am. I've lived in Cumberland, Virginia all of my 22 years. I love the Lord with all of my heart. I attend Dillwyn Holy Temple Church in Dillwyn, Virginia. I am actively involved with our youth. I currently plan and organize different activities throughout the year. I am also apart of the choir and the church secretary. I am presently employed with Central Piedmont Action Council, Inc. Within this agency I have worn a couple of different hats. But as of now I wear the hat of receptionist and I am the assistant to the Executive Secretary. I have been with the agency for eight months now and I really enjoy my job. The atmosphere is very comfortable and I work with such pleasant people - for the most part. Whenever I have free time - which is not too often I enjoy watching a good wholesome movie, reading romance, crossword puzzles, and crocheting. Upon graduating from ODU it is my desire to obtain a career where traveling and working with the public would be involved intensely. I absolutely enjoy traveling and working with people. Of course other factors are important such as salary, vacation, work atmosphere, etc. but I the aspect of working with people and doing all I can to help them is what I really take pleasure in doing.

My name is Shane Everett and I am 27 years old. I was born and raised in Suffolk Virginia and surprisingly, I am proud of this. I have wonderful parents and equally wonderful older brother and younger sister. I suffer from typical middle kid syndrome. I started ODU in 1992, and in 1996 I was hired by the Suffolk Police Department during my last semester. So I dropped out and became an officer which was an entirely different education. A year and a half ago I was seriously injured in a car accident while on duty. While chasing a stolen car I flipped mine going about 110 mph. (I don't recommend this to anyone) After five days in ICU, two weeks in the hospital, five surgeries, some metal rods and screws, and over a year of intense physical therapy, I am proud to say that I am walking again. I am in the process of retiring and I am taking this time to finally finish my Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice (minor in political science). I should be graduating in August. While on the force, I was a "street tech". These are a handful of officers trained to gather evidence and assist the crime scene technicians on larger cases. Because of this great experience, I am planning to pursue a career in crime scene forensics. In my spare time I play drums. I have played since I was eight years old and consider it one of the few things I'm good at. I also spend the warmer weekends in Nags Head.

Hi, Everyone! My name is Amanda Fagan. I am 20 years old. I have lived in Portsmouth, VA all my life. I am a junior here at ODU. My major is Psychology. I have changed my major about four times, but I am going to stay with this one. I am really interested in people do the things they do. I am minoring in counseling. I plan to go to the University of Montana to receive my Masters and hopefully stay there and get my PH.D. I really do not have that much of an exciting life. I have an older sister, who also attends ODU. She will be graduating this year. She is so lucky. I have a half-brother who lives in California. He owns his own business there. I live at home with my parents. I am trying to save money so I can move to Montana. I have a little dog. He is cute, but he can be annoying. He is white with spots. I forget what kind of dog he is. I used to work in a coffee shop in which I developed an addiction to coffee. It really helps me for studying. My hobbies involve shopping, reading, and going to church functions. I have not done any traveling. I hope to go to Australia and learn how to surf. I would love to climb the bridge in Sydney. I am not really good with sports. I did play volleyball, but that did not last long. Well, that is me in a nut shell.

y: I was born in Norfolk, Virginia (at the time when Norfolk General Hospital was the only hospital around). I have lived in Virginia Beach all my life and have seen such changes as Virginia Beach Blvd. go from two lanes to what it is today, a field which was "turned into" Pembroke Mall and can remember when the Oceanfront was a place where you could park footsteps from the water and to shop you had to go "Downtown" (to Norfolk). Actually, Virginia Beach wasn't even Virginia Beach it was Princess Anne County. Many changes have occurred but it's still a great place to live! I am attending ODU for the third time (three majors) and plan on finishing at least one this time! I am a single mom to an eight-year-old son and we enjoy anything "child" related such as museums, parks, playgrounds and recreation center related activities. We live at the Oceanfront and spend lots of time on and around the Boardwalk during the summer. Our family also lives close and we enjoy spending time with them too. I also have a daughter who graduated from ODU with a BS in Biology/Chemistry. Much to the displeasure of my son we have no animals (have tried fish and hamsters) but between family, friends, school and "life" I am not sure we have time for a pet right now anyway. Hoping everyone has a good semester! Thanks for all the interesting autobiographies.

Criminal Justice

I grew up in a small town in West Virginia with my parents and my brother who is 10 years older than me. I attended West Virginia Tech for about 2 years but I wasn't ready for college and really messed up. I didn't mess up because I wasn't smart enough; I just never bothered to go to class. When my parents saw my grades they refused to let me go back to school until I could pay for it myself. Basically they said that they had wasted enough money and I should start looking for a job or something because I wasn't going to flunk out of college and just sit around and have them supporting me. So I joined the army, even though I had no intention of actually going. When the day came for me to leave, I said I wasn't going and my mother informed me that I was. I was 20 years old and my mother packed my bags and left me at the recruiting station. It was probably the best thing that could have happened to me. I was on the fast road to nowhere! After leaving basic training I went to Monterey, CA to learn Spanish at the Defense Language Institute. Next I was in San Angelo, TX for intelligence analyst school. After my training I was stationed Fort Meade, MD, Colon, Panama and then Fort Belvoir, VA where I was discharged after 8 years in the army. I really loved my job in the army and I got to travel all over the country and see things my friends from high school can only read about. Once I left the army, I got a job as a defense contractor doing basically the same job, which was even better because I got paid more and didn't have to go to physical training in the morning. Once I got married and had my daughter, my husband and I both agreed that it was best if I stay home with her and use this time to finish up my degree. There are days that I really miss work but I have faith that I am doing the right thing and everything will work out for the best.

I graduated in 1996 from Deep Creek High School in Chesapeake, VA. I went to two years at Radford University and two years to Old Dominion University. I thought I finished all of my classes in the summer of 2000 but come to find out I had one last class to take which is this class. Then I am done and will hopefully begin another chapter of school either with a masters or a BS in information technology. I love computers but hate being behind a desk all day. I am now a Norfolk Police Officer and have been with them since October 2, 2000. It is a very interesting job because you are never sure what is going to happen on your shift. I was in the academy for six long hard months and have been on the street for almost a year. Once my year is over I will be off my first probation but Norfolk has a two-year probation. Unfortunately you are not allowed to attend too many schools since you are still on probation. I am on the Norfolk Police Riot team though which is a good experience at least until a riot happens anyway. I eventually want to be a federal agent for DEA, ATF, or INS. That is the ultimate goal for my career. I would rather go to DEA because you have a more chance to be out in the field instead of behind a desk. I am engaged and have a date set for 2003. My finance and I have been together for a little over 8 years. Kind of hard to believe but we have made it through high school, college, and careers. He is attending ODU right now and graduates in May 2002 with a BS in Information Technology. That is about everything that is interesting about me.

HI, my name is Claire Ford and I was born into small town life in Beloit, Wisconsin. Fortunately I have an Austrian mother who decided that Wisconsin just wasn't going to cut it and a father who was in international business. So I was allowed the great opportunity of living overseas and traveling everywhere! I have lived in Italy, Germany and the Philippines. After high school I ended up in our nation's capital and at Northern Virginia Community College. I stayed there for a few years, studying and working, until it hit me that you just can't stay in community college forever! So I moved down here to Norfolk and started studying here at ODU. Now I am 24 years old and in my final semester, counting down the days until graduation. I am majoring in Psychology and minoring in Criminal Justice, and someday I hope to either work in prisons or within the court system in Victim Witness. Right now, I am a residential specialist at a residential facility for adults with dual diagnosis of mental retardation and mental illness. It's a great job that I would enjoy even more if it paid enough to pay my bills! However I suppose that is the way it is when you choose a career in the human services field- you sacrifice riches but are rewarded every day in that you are helping others. Well enough about me I'm interested in reading about all of you! This is my first Internet course and I'm sure it will be interesting. Have a great semester everyone!

Human Service Counseling

Hello. I am completing enough credits in behavioral sciences to apply to George Mason University's graduate program, for a master's in community counseling. I am currently a local probation officer and love my job. Prior to this career, I worked for 2 large corporations as 1st line supervisor in communications and manufacturing. Although the money is not even close, the satisfaction more than makes up the difference. I think I might like to be a counselor in a correctional facility. As long as it will take me to get a master's, I am sure I will have changed my mind several times over. I am married with 2 grown step-children. My "brood" consists of a spoiled rotten Amazon parrot, 2 outside temperamental cats, a very fat goat, and an Appaloosa horse who runs at the smell of leather. As you have probably discovered, I have no discipline over my animals and the are the loves of my life. I am also an older student and I think this has made a huge difference in the way I have approached my studies. I never would have made it this far had I gone to college as a teen. While I need this class for my future educational aspirations, I believe any classes I take in psychology may help me in my current job. I look forward to reading the bulletin board and getting to know all of my classmates.

Currently I am a part-time student pursuing a BS degree in Human Services in Counseling. Having recently chosen a minor in Psychology, this is my first psychology class towards the completion of my degree. Plans to graduate are set for the summer of 2003. I have all intentions of continuing my education and pursuing my Masters Degree. Maybe I will complete my Masters by 2013 at the rate that I am going. Looks as though I am completing degrees every ten years. (smile) I am employed full-time with the City of Danville. I have worked for the City for 8 ½ years and 2 ½ of those years has been with of Social Services Division as an Employment Services Worker. As an Employment Services Worker, I assist Welfare Recipients with finding employment and becoming self-sufficient. Things are "bleak" at this time. With prayer and faith there is hope. I enjoy my work, however I am seeking higher goals in the human services' field. My favorite hobby is shopping, for anything, just wish I had plenty of money to do it with.

History / Political Science

Hello, my name is Elizabeth Franklin, but I prefer to be called Beth. I have been seeking a degree in history for the past year and a half. It is my ultimate goal to become a lawyer. Initially I thought that history would be the best area of study to prepare me. Then I got to register for the first time. Getting into a history class at Old Dominion University is worse than having your wisdom teeth removed. Currently I am considering changing my major to political science. This semester I am enrolled in my third and fourth political science class as well as my second psychology class and my first criminal justice class. I look forward to comparing the topics as they all intertwine to create the skills needed in an excellent lawyer. To be more specific I would like to be a children's lawyer, practicing in family law. Hopefully I will defend children from abusive family members, assist in removing them from unfit homes, protect them from dangerous materials, and other related situations. A terrible soft spot for children in bad situations decided my career fate. I consider psychology one of the main proponents in analyzing clients situations and preparing a case. I have pursued the field since high school and am still intrigued by the different applications of the topic. The more I learn, the more I want to know about other areas. This is my first web based class and I am excited about experiencing something different.

My name is Paula Frederick. I am 31 years old. I live in Callao, VA. I have 3 children, 2 boys 10 and 4, and 1 girl 13. My husband and I also have custody of his 14 year old daughter, so there's never a dull moment at our house. I am on my second marriage. I started going to college when I was 22. I was going studying Nursing. I took all my pre-requisites and then stopped going for many reasons. Six years ago, I went to work at the Northern Neck Regional Jail. They started a program for the employees in which they would pay for your education if you went to college for a degree. I started back again in 1998. I graduated from Rappahannock Community College in May 2001 with an Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice. I have now decided to continue my education in the form of a Bachelor's Degree. I will Major in Psychology and Minor in Criminal Justice. I decided to major in Psychology because it is a broad field and it gives a lot of options for a line of work. I have my heart set on working in Probation and Parole. I starting working at the jail as a Security Officer. In 1998, I moved into the Booking and Classification department. That was a very interesting area because you found out a lot of things about each of the inmates that were brought into the jail. You learn about their backgrounds, different nationalities and origins. This past September, I moved into the Programs/Work Release/Home Incarceration deaprtment. This, too, is very rewarding. You get the feeling that you are really helping people by allowing them the opportunity to participate in different programs, wheteher it be religious or drug and alcohol rehabilitation. The Work Release and Home Incarceration lets them feel that they can regain trust, such as being allowed to work outside the jail or to serve their sentence outside the jail. All in all, I enjoy helping people and I'm sure that a careee in the field of Psychology would enhance that joy. Paula Frederick

I graduated from Central Virginia Community College the first time in May 1997 with an Associate's Degree in Office Systems Technology. After graduation, I was hired in the Counseling Department at Central Virginia Community College as their Office Assistant. It wasn't until I worked in the Counseling Department that I realized I wanted to continue my education to become a Career Counselor. I loved and continue to love working with students in helping plan their future. I then graduated in May 2001 with an Associate's Degree in General Studies. I will graduate May 2002 with my Bachelor's Degree in Human Services Counseling. I have been taking bachelor courses part-time since Spring of 1998 and I can't believe I am almost ready to graduate! I am currently working as the Administrative Assistant to the President of Central Virginia Community College in Lynchburg, Virginia. I love my job and the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life. My plans after graduation are to take a break for a semester and then begin my Master's Degree in Counseling at Lynchburg College. Since I also enjoy computer design, I may do some graphic/web design work out of my home while continuing to work at the college. I look forward to the challenging and rewarding experiences that life has in store for me.

My name is Casey Funk. I was born in San Diego, California in January 1977. At the time, my dad was flying F-4's as a RIO and my mom was a secretary. My brother was born in June 1978 and my mom had become a professional mother. In 1985 my dad was stationed at NAS Oceana at VF-84, a Tomcat squadron. We lived in Virginia Beach and my brother and I started playing community sports on the base like soccer and baseball. A couple of years later, dad was stationed in London, England. By this time he had become a Lieutenant Commander and was the Admiral's Aide, "flying a desk". After his tour, he was stationed in NOB Norfolk and we moved back to our old house in Virginia Beach. After that life was pretty normal, for your average Navy brat, until 1992 when my parents divorced. After the divorce my dad was stationed at NRD Portland and my brother went with him. I stayed in Virginia Beach with my mom to finish high school at Kellam. After high school I went over to the local university (TCC) where it took me 3 years to get a 2 year degree. Before I graduated I got a full time job as an Engineering Tech at a local Civil Engineering firm. I then transferred into the College of Civil Engineering at ODU where I have been now for about 3 years. I decided to minor in Psychology because it is a subject I am interested in and I needed a small break from my field of study.

My name is Jennifer Garcia. I am 22 years old. I was born and raised in Norfolk. I just got married about 6 months ago to my wonderful husband Isaac, who is in the Marines. I have known him since I was about eight years old-he was my next door neighbor! We started dating when I was in high school, and we've been together ever since. The only problem is that he's stationed in N.C., so I really only see him on the weekends. He drives four and a half hours to get here on Friday when he gets off work and then turns around and drives back on Sunday. He's such a sweetheart! I love him more than he will ever know. Sometimes it's difficult being so far apart, but we make it work. He supports me in everything that I do, including my rigorous schooling at ODU. I am a senior in the process of finishing up course requirements for my biology major and my psychology minor in time to graduate in May. I will have a BS degree with an emphasis in biology (pre-med). I plan to take the MCAT in April, but I will be taking a year off after graduation before applying to medical school. During my year off I plan to move down to N.C. to be with my husband. I will of course bring along my pets, who include a cat (PeeWee), a ferret (Cindy), and a little 2 pound doggie (Cujo). While there, I hope to enjoy some much needed time off as well as do some volunteer work at the local hospital or possibly join the emergency medical team (EMT). In 2003, Isaac will be stationed here in Norfolk, so we will move back up here where I plan to attend EVMS. Well, that's pretty much my life right now in a small nutshell. Oh, I forgot to mention that I have a younger brother who also attends ODU. He's a little dork, but I love him! J

Human Services Counseling

Hello everyone! I'm Melody Gilchrist. While growing up, my parents would tell their friends that I was almost a "tunnel baby." They would then explain what they meant by those words. My mother was in labor, and my dad had to take her to Portsmouth General for me to be delivered. There was a traffic jam in the tunnel (as usual), and my parents were afraid that I was going to come whether they were prepared or not. They never told me the details as to how the tunnel personnel were notified, but my mom was safely whisked away in a tunnel vehicle. I was delivered in the hospital. I guess you can tell by the name of the hospital that I am a native local of Virginia. I have lived my whole life in this great state. At times, I feel as if I'm a member of the dying breed. Most people I encounter are from other places. I'm am also the only girl out of 4 boys. I grew up as a tomboy, and my family still mentions the things I did to compete with my brothers. I married right after high school, and I have 2 girls. I decided at the time to put school on hold. Unfortunately, my marriage wasn't successful, but I did decide to fulfill my goal of returning to school. I graduated from TCC in December 2001 (Yeah), and my plans are to eventually receive a master's degree in education.

My name is Kimberly Graham and I am a senior at ODU. I am majoring in pre-med biology and minoring in psychology. I aspire to one day be an Emergency Pediatric Physician. I've wanted to be a doctor since I was five years old. I will be graduating from ODU in May 2003. After graduation I hope to attend John Hopkins University for medical school or grad school. I was born in San Antonio, Texas and my entire life was spent in the military as a brat. My father was in the Army and we traveled all over. I have two older sisters, one of which is in the Air Force and lives in Chicago, Illinois and the other is married and has five beautiful children who vary in age from three to thirteen and they live in Tacoma, Washington. My life is filled with challenges everyday, with school, working and taking care of a four year old. So you can imagine how fun my life is and how much time I have to myself......none. I enjoy being a mother, my daughter Niara has taught me so much about life and I can't imagine my life without her. She and I have a very strong mother-daughter bond and I love spending time with her. She brings a smile to my face everyday when I get home from having a bad day at work or even school. In my spare time I enjoy writing poetry. I write about things that I've seen or situations I've been in or even emotions I'm feeling at a certain time. Writing is a way for me to get away for awhile and not think about things that are going on or things that I have to do. It's a stress reliever for me in a way. I also love to watch movies. I am a movie lover and I try to go to the movies at least once a week or more to catch up on all the latest movies. Its way for my daughter and I to also spend quality time together when I'm not working or doing homework. I hope this lets you know a little bit about who I am as a person and what I aspire to do in my life. I know this class will help in my endeavors and I'm looking forward to learning a lot.

Psychology

We all play many different roles in our lives. In my life I also wear several hats. I am a mother, wife, daughter, sister, student and co-worker. These roles all require a great deal of my time. I'd have to say the one that is the most rewarding is the role of mother. I enjoy the antics of my two sons and am constantly challenged to instill in them the values I grew up with while keeping current with today's concerns and issues. Being a mother has made me a more patient and flexible person. Not unlike my role as a wife I may add. As if being a wife wasn't laborious enough I'm a navy wife to boot. If it appears I'm complaining I'm not. I'm simply trying to convey the degree of difficulty of these roles when you're juggling them all at once. As a daughter and sister I am suddenly transported to my childhood. Not only do we frequently go 'down memory lane' we sometimes have a tendency to treat each other as if a time machine has taken us back fifteen years. I am the middle child and if you have ever heard the theories of the middle child syndrome I'd like to take this time to say they are all true. To round out my roles I am a co-worker and a student. As a full time employee, by midday my energy level starts to taper off. Going to work everyday gives me a feeling of productiveness that I don't seem to get with my other roles. Finally, last but not least is my role as a student. Every since my first psychology class in high school I have been in love and captivated with the study of psychology. Several psychology classes and years later I have the same enthusiasm for it. Hopefully, after reading briefly about my roles as mother, wife, daughter, sister, co-worker and student you are able to gain a picture of who I am and the things that matter the most to me.

My goal acquire my PH.D and maybe even someday own my own "firm", and be the head "doc". I want to deal with children who come from abusive families, and with adults from the same type of background but had never had treatment. My especially enjoy learning about dissociative disorders, such as schizophrenia or multi-personality disorder. I recently finished the required abnormal psychology course that was taught by Dr. Mona Tiernan. I honestly thought that the class was very interesting and I passed with an "A" (yeah!). I've been attending ODU since the fall of 1999 and I am slowly, very slowly working my way up. I graduated from Hickory High School with honors (I was very proud).

Hello All. My name is Julie. I was born (just over a quarter of a century ago) and raised in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. After finishing my Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology from James Madison University, I moved to Westminster, MD to work in a small community hospital. In my work both in Maryland and at Winchester Medical Center, I have come into contact with many neuropsychologists. I adore my work as a speech pathologist, however, I am actually a perpetual student. I find the work of neuropsychology extremely fascinating. Not only is it intimately related to my own field but also it addresses the behavioral aspects of patients, which I highly value but do not address directly in my clinical practice. I decided to take undergraduate psych courses "for fun" to decide if a doctorate in neuropsychology is how I would like to spend the next ten years of my life. J And amazingly enough J, I am learning tremendous amounts about the numerous other branches of psychology…finding most of them very intriguing. SOOOooooo, I started this whole thing with a desire to become a neuropsychologist…but who knows what I will be when I grow up. Have a wonderful day!

Hello as you can tell my name is Stephen, but everyone knows me as Jamie. I am, hold on to your seat, 32 years old and I live in Danville, VA. I have about one more year to finish my degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Psychology and I can not wait until it is over. I was born in Danville and stayed here until joined the United States Air Force after graduation. The USAF sent me all over this planet and I since I love to travel, I loved every minute of it. In the USAF, I was part of the military police and I guess it got into my blood. After four and a half years I got out of the service and returned to Danville where I became a police officer. I have been an officer here in Danville for nine years now. After four years, I was assigned to the K-9 division, where I have been ever since. I have a seven-year-old German Shepherd named Roni. Roni is from Hungry and I had to learn to speak Hungarian to give him his commands. Roni is used for patrol work, which includes tracking, building searches, handler/officer protection. Roni is also used for drug work, which includes marijuana, cocaine, crack, hash, and meth. I have been married for more than nine years to my high school sweetheart, Angle, who was still available after I returned from the service. I have learned a different language for this assignment as well, just kidding. We have one son, Tyler, who will be seven in February and we have another child on the way, due August 2. After finishing my degree I will continue on to get my Master's degree in Counseling.

I now live with a few friends in Virginia Beach. When I was a child my parents got divorced. My mom made me see a psychologist. I despised him. I grew up thinking that psychologists were money-hungry individuals who did not care about there patients. Throughout my adolescence, my mother thought I was angry with her ! ! and my father so she sent me to several other psychologists. My opinion of them stood unaltered. I had to take Intro to Psych my freshman year in college. As hypocritical as it was, I loved it. I now appreciate the good that psychologists do. Our oldest daughter is 13, our second born daughter is 11, and our last and FINALLY a son, age 10. Due to becoming a mom at such a young age, I did not start college right away. However, due to God's blessings I have been rewarded the opportunity to fulfill my life long dream. I'm a full time student at ODU, and a part-time student at VSU. The reason I'm a duel-enrolled student is because I'm working smarter not harder. You see, I will have enough credits to complete my Bachelor's Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies w/a focus in English at VSU this summer. Once receiving this degree, I will use it to enter the school system as an elementary school teacher this fall. Upon completion of this degree, I will start taking graduate classes in the fall of 2002. Hi Dr. Gillen! My name is Kimberly Hudgins and I am a senior at Old Dominion University. I expect to graduate in May after spending a long six years in college-but that story comes later. I think I will start with how I ended up in Virginia Beach. My father was a pilot in the Marine Corps, and after meeting my mom in California-they moved to Pensacola, Florida where they had me! We spent another year and half there and then moved to Hawaii-it was great as far as I can remember! While in Hawaii, my brother Bryan was born, and then later that year we moved back to the states. We went all the way from Hawaii, to North Carolina! After a couple year stint at Camp Lejeune, my dad was transferred back to Pensacola for another five years. During that five years, my brother Matthew was born, and so was my sister Kasey. Towards the end of our stay in Florida-my dad decided to apply to Pan Am Airlines like many of his pilot friends were doing. He was later hired, and we relocated to Virginia Beach where his family lived. We have now been in Virginia Beach for approximately 13 years. During that thirteen years, a lot has happened!!! I graduated high school in 1996 from Tallwood High School, and started ODU that fall. After spending two years at ODU (political science major), I was hired as a legislative assistant for Delegate Robert F. McDonnell, and met a firefighter (Mark Mayo) who in the near future would be my husband! So, expecting that I was going to be extremely busy-I took a couple of years of school. I ended up working in Richmond for the first two months of every year during the General Assembly session (which is where I am now), and Mark and I built a house. Mark and I were then married in May 2000. Knowing that I couldn't be a newleywed and go to Richmond for the rest of my life, I went back to school that fall which brings me to the present! Mark and I hope to have a couple of kids eventually-but are content with our chocolate lab-Remmy, and

I'm taking web based classes because I don't want to transfer right now to pay an enormous bill for out-of-state tuition. Sometimes I am in Maryland and sometimes I am in Virginia. Seeing that I travel a lot, I wanted a flexible school schedule that would fit my needs and accommodate my plans. I plan to transfer to either Howard or University of Maryland for the summer session of 2002. I have a 3.6 GPA and I am ready to graduate with honors! When I am in Maryland, I am with my significant other and when I am in Virginia, I am with my mother, so I like to be out and about! I am 20 years of age, I am not single and I do not have any children! I am taking this class because I like Psychology and it was the next best thing available. When I finish the class, I plan on earning no less than an A- and I would like to pursue further studies in Psychology as my minor! I plan on having fun this semester and good luck to you too!

My two loving parents Christina and Philip Iovino raised me. My mother Christina is a pre-k teacher and my father Phil is the Superintendent of the school system in my small hometown. Both my sister and brother inherited something I did not, a brain for and computers. I am very bad with computers but I have decided to be brave and take this Internet course anyway. I graduated from Essex High School in 1999. After high school, I attended Rappahannock Community College in Warsaw, Virginia. I attended RCC for two and a half years and, I decided to major in Human Services Counseling with a minor in Psychology. I have thrown around so many different ideas for my major but I think I have finally found one that I will enjoy. I have taken an Introduction to Psychology course as well as a Developmental Psychology course in the past and I really enjoyed both courses. I am also taking two other Psychology courses this semester in addition to this course. I am really nervous about this semester and I hope once the semester gets rolling my butterflies will disappear. I look forward to working with my professor and my classmates and I will also enjoy getting to know more about everyone.

My name is Crystal Guadalupe Ireland Palmer. I'm a twenty-four year old transfer student to Old Dominion University; this is my first semester. I was originally seeking a college that offered a Bachelor's in Early Childhood Education, but found this to be a difficult task in Washington, unless one wants to commute to Seattle. I'm now working towards a Human Services Counseling degree. I would like to use my degree as a stepping stone into research and assessment of children, for they are my focus and my life's passion. I was born in Sierra Vista, Arizona, where I was cast in a movie at three days old called Young Pioneers. Apparently I found the experience boring, for I slept through the whole taping when I suppose to be crying. I can't seem to escape the military life, so travel to far away places has shaped who I am today. My father spent thirty years in the ARMY. We lived in Germany, Texas and Kansas. When my father retired, my mother joined with AAFES sending us to England and Oklahoma. It was in Oklahoma that I met my high school sweetheart and now husband, who then joined the NAVY. Before I began my travels with him, I finished my AA in Psychology at Rose State College. I had planned on finishing my degree shortly after we were married in South Carolina, but found traveling with my husband more exciting. We love the outdoors and seeing new places. Even when he's out to sea, I find myself continuing my travels visiting family across the country. Now that my husband is getting out of the Navy in the very near future, I find myself wanting to finish college while still being able to the afford tuition. I recently got my first job last year with the Institute of Family Development better known as Homebuilders. I'm excited about the path I've chosen for myself and look forward to learning all I can.

I was born on January 17, 1980 in Richmond, Virginia and have lived there all of my life. I am the oldest of three children and I will be the first person in my family to graduate from college. I am majoring in biology with a health and wellness minor. I aspire to be a doctor working in the fields of obstetrics & gynecology. In my spare time I love to eat, sleep, watch tv and volunteer. I currently volunteer at a women's clinic and at a couple of physician's offices. After graduation, I plan to get a second degree in nursing and then go off to medical school. I believe that it is important for me to get a second degree in nursing because doctors and nurses are part of a team and I want to experience both sides of that team. Getting my second degree in nursing would also give me a deeper exposure into the medical field. My favorites are subway, scary movies, and sunny days. Although this course is not a requirement for my major, I love psychology and I thought that this would be a fun class to take. I am really excited about taking this course because the material that we will be covering sounds very interesting and because I have never taken a web course before :o)

I was born in Northampton, MA in 1949, the youngest of six children. At ten, I was enrolled in a boarding school where I stayed until graduating high school in 1967. Within two years of graduation, I moved to San Francisco, working at various jobs until my sister finally convinced me to join the Navy. I agreed it would be something different and interesting for three years, so the next evening after work, at the age of 27, I enlisted in the United States Navy as a Seaman Recruit. After basic training, my first assignment was back to San Francisco. At the end of three years, I was asked where I would like to go. I said San Diego and was reenlisted for another three years. And so it went for the next twenty-four years. In 1998 I retired as a Master Chief Petty Officer (E-9), from Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. It was a rewarding career that took me from ship to shore and sea to sea. I spent various amounts of time in France, Spain and Italy, through the Suez Canal to the Gulf of Oman, down to Africa and Singapore, then to Japan, Korea and Guam. I enjoyed my three-year tour onboard the ship USS VULCAN (AR 5), but felt most gratified in my instructor assignment in Norfolk, VA. During one assignment in Portsmouth, NH, I met and married William "Don" Johnson, Sr., also a sailor. Between the two of us, we have 2 sons and a daughter who have blessed us with 4 grandchildren. After visiting some friends who retired from the Navy and lived on a farm in Green Bay, my husband and I decided this was where we wanted to put down roots. We found a home in Kenbridge, where we enjoy the peacefulness and simplicity of country life. Don's "full time" job is to hit little white balls around a great big field with different shape and size sticks. I enjoy computers as a hobby. Having amassed numerous credits from various colleges around the country, I decided to put them together into a degree. I recently completed all requirements for an AAS in computer technology at Southside and am presently pursuing my bachelors at ODU. Don and I are both involved in the community in various capacities.

As, a teacher, I can use this information in the classroom. I have had other psychology classes, but never a social psychology class. When this class is over, I hope to have a better understaning of social behavior and social thought. I am planning a September, 2002 wedding. I am very excited about this big step, I am about to take very soon. So taking this class online allows me time to plan my wedding. I enjoy, reading, traveling, and exercising. I have been busy this past year working part-time and going to school full-time, that I haven't read any books lately besides my textbooks for school. I don't travel as much as I use to,every since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. I recently joined a health club to help me stay in shape and to relieve some stress.

My name is Jason Kennedy and I am 20 years old. Currently a junior, I have a 3.94 g.p.a. while attending full time. I have lived in the Hampton Roads area all my life, mostly in Virginia Beach. I was born at Depaul Medical Center in the much older section of Norfolk, somewhat close to the main campus, on May 9 of 1981. Amazingly enough, living here all my life is an accomplishment considering my dad spent 20 years in the Navy, all of which was based in Norfolk or Oceana in Virginia Beach. I currently cannot wait until I get my undergraduate degree because I find upper level classes to be easy. I will most definitely go to a graduate school, pending graduation in May of 2003. Although my major is psychology, and I am truly interested in the field, I don't think I will go to graduate school for it. I am much more interested professionally in criminal justice, which is my minor. I do have plans for a doctorate in the near future, maybe not all at once, but it will happen. I can't remember any time in the past where I've had any problems with any classes, so I guess you can call me somewhat of a nerd. The physical appearance lacks that stereotype though. A few years ago, right out of high school, I sent self-pictures to modeling agencies just to see what would happen, and I got accepted by 3. I never did it though because that isn't my style. Appearance doesn't push me along in life, for my true hobby would have to be reading. I love the classics of literature, from the well known Shakespeare to the lesser known. I also love to work out, and of course, can't live without the beach. There's got to be some salt in my blood. I've never lived more than 5 minutes away from a beach.

I am a 20 year old, second semester junior, and resident of Old Dominion University student. My major is Marketing and minor is Psychology. I am in good academic standing and will graduate in May of 2003. I have only resided here in Norfolk for my three college years. My permanent residency is Chesterfield, VA. It is located outside of Richmond, VA. I have lived there for most of my life, although; as a child I resided in Plainfield, NJ. I go back home a lot to visit my mother, Sylvia, and sister Kieasha because I'm always missing them along with my other close relatives. I am a family oriented person. I love my family so much especially my little cousins. They keep my happy and smiling because they are so funny. You've got to meet them. When I'm not with my family, I am usually found at the mall or the gym because those are my favorite places to go. I will spend my money down to the last dollar buying books for ODU of course. It's a bad habit I need to break. I 'm just happy I have no credit cards, which is a plus for me. Another plus is my talent of beautifying the human head. I am an excellent braider, well so I am told. Cornrows are my specialty. I dread block braids. I have a slight artistic hand, but I'm kind of rusty because I do not draw all of the time. It is something I once truly enjoyed. I enjoy spending time with my friends and trying new things, like this Internet class. It doesn't seem bad. I know I will enjoy communicating with you all and learning more about you and Social Psychology in adapting to this new teaching method. Good luck allJ

Greetings, my name, as you know, is Misty and I am from Richlands, Virginia. This is my first semester at Old Dominion University and I am very anxious to get started in my curriculum. After many years of soul searching trying to discover who I am, I finally found a career that makes me feel good about what I hope to do with my life. This is my second year as a junior level student. I should be graduating with a Bachelors degree this May with all of my friends however, it seems to have taken me an extra year and a half to finally connect with a major that inspires me to succeed. I feel at peace knowing that one day I might be able to help someone else define who they are in life and what purpose they represent as a human being. A year ago I attended King College in Bristol, Tennessee in pursuit of an English degree. I had hopes of being a teacher or maybe even going to law school. Although I feel I would enjoy both of these fields of work, neither seemed to rest well with my inner voice or 'calling'. I wrestled with my personal identity struggle for most of my young adult life. I always had a fear of settling for a career that really didn't satisfy my hunger for happiness. I believe that fear is what has compelled me to keep searching for a place to belong. My parents always instructed me to educate myself in a career that I would enjoy as well as one that allowed me to be an independent woman. All my life I have tried to keep these instructions vivid in my mind but at the same time listen to my own heart. In short, my life's pilgrimage has been to seek out my little niche in this world and through all of my searching I have acquired a desire to help others. I feel I have finally found that long lost road that I have so diligently been in search of. I anticipate that it will lead me through an enriched and meaningful existence.

Business Management

Hi! My name is JoAnn Landry. I am 35 years old, married (16 years) and a mother of a wonderful 12-year-old son and 3-year-old Shih-tzu dog named Dusty! I was born and raised in Hudson, New Hampshire and relocated to Virginia Beach, VA in 1991. While in NH, I attended an ALL girls' Catholic school for grades kindergarten through high school. I am the oldest of 3 and the only girl (Daddy's little girl!!). My favorite colors are blue and white! My hobbies are keeping the house clean and playing BINGO. I was a Business Analyst for Huntsman Chemical Corporation, a plastics manufacturer in Chesapeake, VA, for 8 years. Due to a company merger, my job became redundant and I was laid off. My severance package has afforded me the opportunity to pursue a degree, of my choice, while still earning half my salary and education assistance. I am very excited about this change in my life. I am enrolled in the Business College pursuing a degree in Business Management. I completed Introduction to Psychology last semester and enjoyed it a lot. I plan to go into the Human Resource field of Management. A major part of Business and Human Resources is understanding and interacting with people. I am sure that this Social Psychology class with help to prepare me for that aspect of my job. I have never enrolled in Internet class before. I am a little nervous about his type of learning. Given a little time, I am sure it will all come together.

Hello, my name is Esther Lapid. I was born in Michigan. Since my dad was in the military I lived in Guam for four years, Spain for four years, and Italy for four years. I moved to Norfolk, Virginia when I was thirteen years old. I also lived in California for a year. I have a daughter named Alexis-Elaine who just turned four in December. She goes to pre-school at St. Mathew's. My husband's name is Arnold. He graduated from ODU in 1998 with a Civil Engineering degree. I go to school full-time and I also work full-time. I work at KETTLER International, Inc in their accounting department. They make the pedal cars and other toys, outdoor furniture, and also some fitness equipment. They have a retail store down Virginia Beach Boulevard, but I work at their warehouse location down London Bridge Road. When I first went to ODU in 1995 I was pursuing a sociology degree. I took a couple of years off to go to California and to raise my daughter. When I went back to school I decided to change majors so here I am now pursuing an accounting degree. Last summer we went to California for my husband's cousin's wedding. Alexis was a flower girl. It took a little bribing to get her to walk down the aisle by herself. We went to Sea World to see Shamu. After that we drove to Anaheim to go to Disneyland, California Adventure, and Universal Studios. Next summer we plan on going to Disney world in Florida.

My name is Amber Law, and I'm 20 years old. I was born in South Port, NC, which is next to Wilmington. My dad is a fish spotter, and at the time his job required that we live down there. We were then moved up to Hampton Roads, specifically Poquoson, when I was 2 years old. I grew up in Poquoson, VA, with my mom, dad, and brother. My mom is a special education teacher in the Poquoson School system. My brother, 1 year my younger, is now attending the University of Virginia College at Wise. He was an all district football player, and recruited by many major universities, including the University of Mississippi, which he will attend next year. I graduated from Poquoson High School in 2000. I then attended Thomas Nelson Community College for one year, before transferring to ODU. Over the past summer I married my high school sweetheart of six years, who is a graduate of The College of William & Mary. We recently bought a house to fix up, in Portsmouth, VA. I then transferred to ODU. My husband and I do not have any children, and do not plan to until I finish school. We have two dogs and a cat. I spend most of my time doing schoolwork, painting and other things to fix up my house. Right now our dogs serve as our children. They are 2-year-old Chocolate labs, and most of my free time is spend tending to them. I enjoy going to movies, shopping, spending time with my family and friends, and going to the beach. Every summer, my husband and I travel to Ocracoke, NC for a vacation. I happy that I am now attending ODU, and I believe that a degree in Psychology will help me to pursue my dream of being a child psychology.

Biology

My name is Riggolette Leeper Jr. Of course I got that name from my father. But there is an interesting story behind the origin of the name. My grandfather was in the Korean War, and a result of this he was stationed over seas. While he was over seas he began listening to opera, his favorite was the opera Rigoleto. Thus the name Riggolette is born.
I was born in Richmond, Virginia, the Southside to be exact. Richmond has been my home for all of my life until the moment that ODU accepted me as a student. I come from a very big family, but a small immediate family being the only child born to my parents. When I got to ODU, I had problems determining my major. I contemplated computer science, English, biology, psychology and many others. During freshman preview I made a fast and rushed decision to be a biology major and has been with the same major every since. I have always been fascinated with the way that things work, perhaps that is what influenced my rushed decision. Psychology is something that I have always wondered about as an adolescent. I was interested in what people were thinking and why people where thinking it at all times. The main question that I bring with me to class everyday is why. With a major in biology and a minor in psychology I think I can answer most of the why questions that I come up with. I hope to learn a lot while in this class in social psychology. Completing my degree in May will be the best day in my life, or at least until I venture into graduate school.

I was born in Oahu, Hawaii on August 7,1981. My family remained in Hawaii for 6 months after my birth. We were relocated to Maryland where my younger sister was later born. After Maryland came Texas, Germany, and Virginia, here my father retired making Virginia my home state. Europe will always be special to me because of all the traveling we did from one country to another. If you haven't guessed my father was in the Army. He joined the Army while still a citizen of Trinidad. My father is from Trinidad and my mother is from Tobago. I have an older brother and sister and also a younger sister (who also attends ODU). I go home (Trindad&Tobago) as often as possible. I am a Psychology Major with an undeclared minor. It's still up for grabs. I enjoy reading books and watching movies (new/classics). I have an immense love for wild cats. I love my family very dearly, we are a close bunch. I enjoy spending time with my friends and siblings (especially their babes). Right now I'm just trying to figure out what I want to do in Psychology. My game plan is to figure out what I don't want to do now, rather than later. Not so simple. For past couple of summers I have been managing restaurants at Kings Dominion. An okay summer job. I am looking to do research this semester and hopefully this summer. I plan on going to grad. school. If anybody reads this and is in the process of applying to graduate school and has some advice to give it would be greatly appreciated.

My name is Katherine Light and I am majoring in Psychology at ODU. I currently live in Virginia Beach but am originally from the Northern Neck (Lancaster County). I graduated from a very small High School; there were only about 80 students in my graduating class. I have an older sister, 23; an older stepbrother, 21; a younger brother, 15; and a younger stepbrother, 14. So any way you look at it I am still the middle child, which is fine by me! As far as hobbies and interests go, I enjoy most sports and outdoor activities. In high school I played indoor and outdoor soccer, field hockey, volleyball and softball. For the past four or five years I have coached youth sports with the YMCA and was also a summer camp counselor. I enjoy hiking, camping, rock climbing, rappelling, and whitewater rafting. I also enjoy going to hockey games locally and not so locally. I usually go see the Norfolk Admirals, Richmond Renegades, Washington Capitals, and the Raleigh Hurricanes (to name a few). Like I said earlier, I live in Virginia Beach, in an apartment with my two dogs and a cat. They definitely keep me entertained. Right now I am working full time at an animal hospital as a veterinary assistant and attending college full time as well. I am looking forward to this semester. This is my first online course and I am interested to see how well it goes.

Hi, I feel like I'm filling out a personals ad, but here goes. I'm a 19-year-old student at ODU (but you probably knew that). I've lived on campus for almost two years now. Last year and semester at Whitehurst and this semester in Powattan. I have been involved with student senate since I came to ODU last year. I also am involved with the Laureate yearbook, Pi Kappa Delta honor society (as president) and theatre. I will be joining Psi Chi (for Psych majors) and Beta Beta Beta (for Bio majors) this semester. I'm engaged to a wonderful junior (I'm a sophomore by the way) named Willy, he also lives on campus. We plan on getting married once we have both graduated in the summer of 2004. After ODU I plan on going to medical school to be an ER doctor, I also plan on completing my masters and PhD in psychology by taking a few night classes and summer school along the way. I plan to be finished with all my schooling (hoping everything works out) by the time I'm 28. I'm a double major in Psych and Bio because I strongly feel that with the profession I'm entering, if you don't have a solid Psych background then you aren't as prepared to deal with an Emergency Room. And at this point I think I have run out of things to say about myself. If you want to see some more of me I do have a website at www.angelfire.com/weird/tigrefish that you are welcome to visit.

I try to keep up with them with the latest styles and music. I'm currently employed as a Substance Abuse Residential Tech and as a Substitute Teacher. I'm a full time student at Old Dominion University and I plan on graduating in the Fall of 2002. I've been inspired by the Lord to seek my degree in counseling, especially substance abuse. My minor is in psychology. I enjoy encouraging others to be the best that they can be and I'm bothered by the words "I can't". I have a strong faith in the Lord and I've committed myself to change. The change that I'm referring to takes place on the inside and it reflects on the outer. God is first in my life and all that I do, and all that I am has come from Him.

My name is Todd McGehee. I am originally from Falls Church, Virginia. I graduated from high school in 1982 and joined the United States Navy. I have been in the Navy for almost 19 years. I am an Aviation Electronics Technician who has enjoyed the field his whole career but now ready to transition to a career where I have a real passion. My last 10 years in the Navy has been primarily devoted to counseling and helping people so I am pursuing a dual major in Psychology and Counseling at ODU as is my wife who took this class last semester. I have really enjoyed my time in the Navy. I have traveled and gained incredible experience in interacting with individuals from extremely diverse cultures and ways of thinking. The Navy has been quite the "springboard" for the path that I am on currently. I have approximately 15 months left in the Navy then I will have the opportunity to be a full-time student here at ODU in Norfolk, Virginia. I live in Virginia Beach with my lovely wife Brandy and our son "Nicko." We have two dogs named Ziggy and Goldie. My wife and I are very proactive parents and we work very hard to ensure that quality time is made for all of us to spend together. We enjoy a lot of outdoor activities like running, bicycling and playing with the dogs. We are devoted Christians and have two important rules in our house: "Do the right thing" and "Be a good person."

Hello everyone! My name is Maisha McKinney, I am a 21 year old senior here at ODU graduating in December 02'. I grew up an Army Brat, so I pretty much call home wherever I am, or my family is at the time. If I was to claim an area I guess I would say Northern, VA because that's where I have lived the longest. I was born in Indianapolis, Indiana and have lived in Germany, Florida, Kansas, Tennessee, and of course Virginia. I'm a pretty laid back person so I don't need a lot to make me happy. I enjoy hanging out with friends and just kicking back and relaxing. I am a member and officer of ODU's Circle K Order, a community service organization, and have been for four years now. I started out at ODU as a Marketing Major and soon decided it was not for me. I liked the creative aspect of it, but was not interested in all of the number crunching. After doing some research I changed my major to Mass Communications, keeping marketing as a minor, while also adding on in Literature & Film. It's funny to me when I tell people my major, being a female, they automatically assume I want to be a News Broadcaster, when I actually want to be behind the scenes running it all. I love to script an idea together and make it happen on film. My career goal is to eventually have my own Video Production Company. My business partner and myself are currently trying to make that dream a reality so be on the lookout for Flip Da Scrip Productions as we hope to become a name you won't soon forget!

My name is Melanie Meehan-Dowe, I am 25, and am in the last semester of my junior year at ODU.I will graduate in Spring 2003, hopefully with honors (my GPA is currently 3.97). It was 4.0 until I recieved an A- in U.S. History last semester, however I can't blame the instructor since the effort I put into the class did not really deserve an A. I am taking 16 credits this semester, hopefully I can manage to keep my grades up. I am not formally employed, although being the full time mother of a 2 ½ year old is enough work! We are beginning to work on potty training which is harder than any college course I can think of. Anybody have any tips? I am married to a wonderful man who I actually met when I was 14, although it took us a few years to get together (we were both shy). My husband, Eddie, is a middle school English teacher and a recent graduate of ODU. We are now discussing who is going to grad school first, I think we will eventually compromise on both going part time, while also working which means we may go several days at a time without actually having a meaningful conversation. Oh well, I guess that's what retirement is for. My passions in life are gardening and music, especially the Grateful Dead. I saw alot of their concerts, before Jerry Garcia died, in fact my husband and I both spent some time following them around on the East Coast portion of their tours. I definitely think some of the most interesting experiences of my life occured during those tours. I am looking forward to the new experience of taking an online course and hope that my technological impairment doesnt hurt my grade.

I started college as an accounting major at George Mason University in 1988, after 3 semesters I enlisted in the Navy, which brought me to Norfolk in the spring of 1992. I began attending classes at ODU part time in 1995. I moved back to the metro area in the summer of 1998 when my father was diagnosed with cancer. I spent that summer with my father and began working with my current firm in the fall of 1998 after my dads' cancer was in remission. I am pursuing a degree in accounting and hope to finish next semester. I currently reside in Northern Virginia and work in Georgetown as the financial analyst for a strategic communications firm (GMMB). It is on the Internet - Poetry.Com. I am fortunate to live close to my brothers and sisters, or at least 3 of them. I have a brother and his family across the road from my house, and my sister and her family live next door to my brother. I have another Sister who lives back east in New Jersey. I visit every now then. I also enjoy reading when given the chance. Cottonwood is close to Sedona, which is known for the Red Rocks. Known attractions here in Arizona are Jerome, which is an Ghost Town, Sedona for the Red Rocks, and the Grand Canyon - which is absolutely wonderful. Hi, my name is Megan Moniot and I am 21 years old. I live Chesapeake Virginia, in my very first apartment! I graduated from Indian River High School in 1998. I started off at TCC for a year and now I've been at ODU for 2 years. My major was Marketing up until last month. It is now Communications with a minor in Marketing. I decided to change my major because I wasn't enjoying all the math/finance classes that were required. I go to school full-time and pretty much work full-time. I love my job! I have been working at the Verizon Wireless Virginia Beach Amphitheater for almost 2 years. I work in the Marketing Department as the Promotions Manager. My summer hours are very long, but I enjoy my work. I deal with radio/TV/newspaper advertising and promotions behind the scenes, and on the day of a show, I handle the media (photographers, radio, newspaper writers). We do about 30 shows in a season, so I keep myself very busy! In the future, I plan to do the same thing I'm doing now, work in the music industry! Besides working and going to school, I hope one day join the Virginia Opera. Since my grandmother and aunt are professional opera singers, I've been around music my whole life. I've been training off and on for 2 years. Well, I love watching movies and my top two movies this year was "A Beautiful Mind" and "Moulin Rouge" and my favorite movie of all time is "Life Is Beautiful". I'm eager to get this class started. I've never taken an online class, so it should be interesting!

Psychology

My first name is Katerine but everyone calls me Michelle. I was born in Washington D.C. in 1972. My father is Italian and my mother is Japanese/Spanish. My family moved back to Peru when I was three months old, they said that the cultural change they faced while here in the United States became more than they were willing to handle. I graduated High School at 16 and decided that I wanted to go to school abroad. My older (and only sister) was 19 at the time and was about to graduate college as a civil, electric, nuclear engineer. I guess part of me wanted to get away from the shadow of such smart sister. My parents gave me the option of attending school in Italy, Spain, or Japan, but I wanted to see the place where I was born. When I was seventeen I came to the United States to go to school. However, while learning the language and looking for the right university, I changed my mind, and when I turned eighteen, ended up joining the United States Navy. Six years later I left the Navy and decided to go to college as I had originally planed. Last year I graduated from Old Dominion University with a BA degree in International Studies. This semester I am back in school fulfilling the necessary requirements to attend graduate school and pursue a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. Looking back at my early years in this country, I can say that I made the right decisions, they might have taken me away from my final goal, but I have no regrets.

Hi everyone! As you all can see, my name is Sharon Nocelo. I was born in Baltimore, Maryland and I am currently living in Virginia Beach. I have lived here almost my entire life. I graduated from Green Run High School in June 2000. My older sister and I still live at home with the 'rents and both of us go to school at ODU. She's planning to graduate this year though. As for me, I won't be graduating until maybe around 2004. It's not that bad though…I really like ODU. Most of my time is either spent at school or at church. Church pretty much keeps me "in check"…heh-heh. Two years ago, three of my church friends and I actually formed a singing group...just for fun though. Anyways…we gave our group a name and started performing at lots of church activities. We even got to sing at a few weddings. But besides singing, and going to school and going to church, I also like to draw, watch movies, play the piano, listen to music, go shopping, play pool, and sleep. When I sleep though, I have a big problem with waking up. I will never forgive myself for messing up during my first semester at ODU. I had 3 morning classes that semester and I couldn't even wake up for them. My grades are getting much better though, now that I've been taking classes at night. This is actually my first time taking a course online. It saves me a 30-minute trip on the highway and the risk of not waking up for class. Hopefully, I will do really well on my first online course.

????

Having been raised in a military family I had a tendency to move a lot. From the early stages in my life I have been forced to become an outgoing person moving from Hawaii, to Germany, and back around the United States I emerged as an outgoing person. I wasn't afraid to go out and get things because I knew that they weren't going to wait for me. At the age of 16, my father received orders to go to Korea. Fortunately, he didn't feel it was in the family's best interest to go, so he retired. In the final two years of high school is when things started to happen for me. It was the first time I was able to have friends for more than four years, and those hypothetical plans I had made might come true. Those hypothetical plans consisted of me going to Old Dominion University (ODU) and receiving my bachelors in Marketing specifically in advertising. But, before I could apply for ODU my life encountered a major hiccup. This major hiccup came in the form of a family meeting; my parents were getting a separation. Needless to say their separation sent me for a whirl the perfect couple was no more. I proceeded with my life as I had to. On May 4th '98, I received my acceptance letter to Old Dominion University. Things started to look up as I was bound for the college of choice. In June I graduated in a class that consisted of over five hundred students. Out of those five hundred students I was the only one whose destination was ODU.
College was a different experience for me than what I was use to. So many people and freedoms, I was sure I would manage just fine. I found friendship and a place of belonging at the Canterbury Center (The Episcopal church on campus.) Or rather it found me. After the first two weeks of college, I received a call from my mom that my grandfather had died and that I needed to fly to Alabama for the funeral.
The only place I knew to turn to was the Canterbury Center. After receiving comfort from the Canterbury Center I became a regular, often volunteering my time to help foreign exchange students adjust to their new atmosphere or prepare meals for those less fortunate. After my grandfather's death it was only a short time till I heard that my parents were getting a divorce. I finished my year out at ODU not looking forward to my broken home.
When my first year at college ended I headed back into the pool industry (which I had been a part of since I had been 15 years old.) It was the summer of '99 that I went to work for Continental Pools Inc. I joined their pool management team because they gave me the opportunity to move into a Supervisor position. This meant that instead of managing one or two pools, as I had in the past, I would be over seeing ten managers at ten different pools. As the summer progressed, so did I. I worked with a determination to prove my worth on the company team. So well in fact that as the summer ended I walked away with the field report leader award, the highest customer retention rate, and the remarkable accomplishment of supervisor of the year award.
Back at ODU for the '99 school year, I was determined to transfer my success from the pool industry to my academic studies. I also returned to become an active member at the Canterbury Center. Early in the year I was appointed to fill the only active student seat on the Canterbury Center Board. It was with this appointment that I was able to attend the Southern Virginia Arch Dieses meeting where I met three bishops. And help to represent the Canterbury Center, as it was ODU and Mary Washington were the only schools in Virginia with active Episcopal outlets.
About half way through my sophomore year numerous fraternities approached me. Four fraternities asked me to look at their chapter and become one of their brothers. In the end, I decided to broaden my horizons and join the Gamma Beta chapter of Pi Kappa Phi. After an extensive associate member process with seven other soon-to-be brothers, I was inducted in a secret ceremony and accepted as a full-fledged brother. My social life jumped dramatically as I had developed close friendships with some of my brothers not to mention the parties.
As my second year at college came to a conclusion and officers for Pi Kappa Phi were being voted on, I had the honor of receiving the Chaplin position for the following year. Which meant that I would be in charge of rituals for the brothers and seeing that the associate members made it to become brothers.
It was now time to head back home to rejoin the Continental Pools team. To my surprise, they asked me to come in for an interview. Since the company had nearly doubled in size since the previous summer the owners felt that two new management positions were needed. After an hour and a half interview I found that myself, as well as others, were being looked at to fill the new Assistant Regional Manager position. Two days after my interview I received a phone call informing me that the position was mine if I wanted it. I gladly accepted their offer. Talk about moving up the chain of command there were now only three people above me. My new title put me in a position above six supervisors, seventy-five pools and over two hundred lifeguards. Needless to say the summer of 2000 was one that required an extortionate amount of time on my part. I frequently worked twelve hours a day; six days a week to ensure that the job was done correctly. I considered myself one of the problem solvers if I was in the area of a problem, whether it was a broken pump, a lazy lifeguard, or a disgruntled property manager, I was contacted and sent to solve the problem.
As the summer of 2000 came to a conclusion, another hiccup in my life occurred. My mom wanted to move to Illinois where her fiancé received an offer for a high paying job. This was a problem in itself because my mom and I had always been there for each other. I knew that after every move my friend or my mom was going to be there. The other part of the problem was that she wanted to take my fourteen-year-old brother with her. The great summer mood I was in had just gotten flushed. After talking with my mom and brother, it became apparent to me that they both wanted to move. I did what I had to, to ensure that they were happy; I talked to my dad about letting my brother go to Illinois. Since my parents had joint custody I knew that allowing my brother to move was not going to be an easy task. After many hours of deliberation between high priced lawyers, my parents, my brother and myself, they were able to move.
As the years have slowly passed. Things have seemed to work themselves out. My mom is happily remarried in Illinois; my brother has become a trumpet genius with the help of an awesome teacher. And my dad and I are happily living here, where we have become better friends than we would have ever thought possible.

Business Administration

Where shall I begin? I am twenty years old. I grew up in Gloucester, Va and moved to many different places over Hampton Roads, but ended up in Middlesex, Va. Because we moved so much, I had to become open and able to talk to people. So, it's very easy for me to carry on a conversation once you get me started. About school…I went to Longwood College when I graduated High School in 2000. Stayed there for three semesters and decided I needed to be home with my family. So, I lugged all of my things back to good ole' Middlesex, VA and got my own place, however I'm at my parent's house all the time. I got back too late to be admitted into ODU right away, so I took classes at Rappahannock Community College during Fall of 2001 and now here I am. I'm still taking classes at RCC and this semester I'll get my Associate's Degree in General Education. I am a full time student. And I work part time as a hostess/bookkeeper for Virginia Street Café in Urbanna, VA. However, after I get my Bachelor's in Business Administration, I'll strive to be a Marketing director for Proctor and Gamble. What else can I say? Oh…I have a pet, like most people, but my pet is very unique…she is a potbelly pig. Her name is Lucy and she is very lovable and has a lot of personality. She lives in my house and has her own room to sleep in. She uses a litter box just like a cat and I have to say she's the best pet I've ever had. So, if you ever need to know about a pig, I'm your girl. Look forward to meeting all of my fellow classmates, and learning a bunch these next couple of months. J

Well I already said quite a bit about me in the 'sign in' thread, but here goes: I am a 20 year old junior, however, this is only my second semester at ODU. I transfered in from Tidewater Community College last fall. I am actually a little behind, because at TCC they duplicate some of their classes (for example, you have to take two history classes to equal one history class here) so I actually just turned a junior after I completed this past fall's semester. Hopefully I will be able to catch up by taking extra classes and some classes this summer. I would LIKE to finish college in 4 years! I am thinking of becoming a police officer for either Suffolk or Chesapeake. Psychology was my original major until I became interested in the police force. If any of you police officers have any tips on getting hired, let me know!!! This semester I'm taking three classes at the Virginia Beach Center. I have never been there before, but it's actually closer to my house, I think, than the main campus. Hopefully this class will be a breeze for me because psychology has always been one of my favorite subjects, and I love internet classes. The bulletin board makes it so much easier for me too, because I am highly familiar with the format. I love bb's! Sometimes I get carried away with posting. Now a little about my personal life... I still live with my parents, but I am going to try to move into a dorm in the fall. I live in Chesapeake, Virginia, down by the Carolina border (out in the 'stix'). I graduated from Hickory High school in 1999. I originally decided to go to a nearby college specifically so I could continue my passion for horseback riding, but alas, my horses are all gone and I can only stand being around my parents for so many years..... I have an older sister who graduated from VCU and lives in Iowa with her husband, and an older brother who goes to Virginia Tech. He just got back from visiting Germany, Prague, and France. Anyway, as for pets, I have a neurotic cat named Sigourney (yes, I said Sigourney), and a million tropical fresh and saltwater as well as coldwater fish. I share my love of fish with my mom, dad, sister, and brother in law. It's contagious! I used to have an australian shepherd but my mom let my sister take her when she moved. :(** She was the greatest! Besides my love for animals, I also like reading. My favorite authors are Steven King, Dean Koontz, John Grisham, and Michael Crichton. My favorite TV shows are the Simpsons (i have EVERY episode on tape!), Friends, and the Practice. Other classes I am taking this semester are international politics, animal behavior, statistics 130M, and Police in American Society. I definitely prefer online classes to regular classes because of the convenience. This is my 3rd online class so far. The other two were at TCC. I wish ODU would offer more online classes! That's all about me!

Psychology

Hello everyone! My name is Clayburn Perry. Everyone can call me "Clay". I want to tell you a little about myself. I'm 26 years old, (SINGLE); I just had to put that in there. I am originally from Washington DC, my parents relocated too the Hampton Roads area in 1988 due to the military. I have one sister and two brothers. My sister attends Old Dominion University as well. I graduated from Delaware State University in May of 2000 with a BA in Sociology. Psychology is my minor so I figured that I would finish up my credits. After I graduated from Delaware State, I was offered a free agent contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars; I was on the "practice squad" for a year and a half. It wasn't until this year until I was officially released. It was a humbling experience. It is an experience that I will more than happy talk about. Being affiliated with money and fame was an eye opening experience. There are more things to go on behind the scenes, its not all glitzy and glamour. It's a rough business, you wake up every morning praying that you will be on the team by the end of the day, it's serious! I have always been a person that has kept a level head, I am quiet at times but majority of the time, and I will tell it like it is. I have a four-year-old son, his name is, Colyn. That's my little man. I am not a flamboyant individual; I'm just me. I can hold a conversation with anybody. I love going to the movies and traveling. I love dress boots)Aldo) and athletic shoes(Nike). I choose to be single right now because, the woman that I get involved with have so many insecurities about them. I love woman but I don't like the petty things. I am going to leave it at that. I am a person that you can call a friend, I will be there till the bitter end. Through thick and then, when you need me, I'll be there. Just take the time to get to know me and I'll take the time to get to know you. I want to have a good semester. My sister informed me that ODU is a great school, I told her, "I'll find out soon" Well everyone, thank you for having me, I look forward to hearing and chatting with each and everyone of you. Let's get the ball rolling. By the way, I would like to meet a great lady!

My name is Amanda Phelps. I am from Chesapeake, VA but spent most of my childhood in South Jersey. In high school, I was on the academic challenge team (like jeopardy), the gymnastics team, and I was the president of my KEY club. I am currently taking a break from the Virginia Military Institute. To understand the need for this, you must realize that I am about 4'10" and 90 pounds. I am not ashamed to admit that my dog is bigger than I am. And, as you can tell from the name, I am a female. Going to a school that is all about appearances did not make my struggle any easier. Eighteen-mile force marches at 3 am, random stops on the dreaded stoops that lasted for hours, and 23 sweat parties, workout sessions involving chaos that most sane people have never seen, did not stop me from pursuing the famous VMI class ring. At VMI, I was a writer for the paper, a member of the fencing team, and the only civil engineering major female in my class (one of only three at the school). Coming here was very strange, partially because of the different people here, and partially because of the extreme size of this school. I must admit, though, that it is nice not to be the only girl in ALL of my classes. I have learned a lot about what the "standard" college experience is like, and although I thought every day that I was missing out on a lot of fun being in a strict environment, I realize that that really wasn't the case. I also realize that losing out on sleep and attending a ton of formations was a small price to pay for some of the things I have experienced and seen.

My name is Mary Lou Phelps and I am 26 years old. Below, I will attempt to describe the many different roles I play in life. Wife: My husband's name is Craig and we have been married for 5 years. We reside in Jarratt, Virginia. Mother: I have a beautiful 3 year-old daughter. Her name is Dallas Morgan Phelps. She is my life!! She is actively involved in ballet, tap dancing, and gymnastics. Employee: I work full time as an Administrative Assistant in the Guidance Department of Gwaltney School. It is a private school located on the campus of Jackson-Feild Homes, a residential facility for troubled girls ages 9 - 18. Student: I graduated from Southside Virginia Community College in the Spring of 1997 and I enrolled in ODU that fall. My degree program is Interdisciplinary Studies - Professional Communication. I will graduate this May. Once I graduate, I will apply for my provisional teaching license. I hope to be able to teach at Gwaltney School this fall. Working with troubled teens is very challenging, but it is also very rewarding. Teacher: I am a Sunday School teacher for ages 2-4 at First Baptist Church of Emporia, Virginia. I don't know what is more challenging, working with children ages 2-4 or with troubled teen? As you can see, I have a very busy schedule. When time permits, I do enjoy working out at the YMCA. I try to go at least three times a week. It is a great stress reliever. Although school is very important to me, I put nothing in front of my family.

Hello everyone! My name is Laura Jo Phillips. I am 21 years old. I was born is Richmond, Virginia, but have lived in beautiful Wythe County, (Southwest) Virginia most of my life. I graduated from Fort Chiswell High School and the Southwest Virginia Governors' School in May of 1999. Less that a month later, I married Tony Darrell Phillips, whom I have known since I was in Kindergarten. We are now both full-time college students and part-time workers. We both have associates degrees from W.C.C. His is in Education, and mine is in General Studies. Currently, he is working on a Bachelors'/Masters' Degree in Elementary Education and I am working on a Bachelor of Science Degree with a Major in Human Services Counseling and a minor in Psychology. I hope to complete my degree at the end of this coming summer. However, my husband still has a way to go with his. In addition to our studies, we both work 30 to 40 hours a week at Food Lion. Tony is a bagger, cashier, stocker, and vendor receiver. I am Back-up Scan Analyst, a cashier, and an office assistant. Needles to say we stay pretty busy trying to keep up with work and school and still have time for each other, our family, our friends, and ourselves. However, I do find some time to relax. In my spare time I enjoy bicycling, cross-stitching, jogging, and writing (especially poetry). After my husband and I complete our degrees and get relatively stable in our careers we hope to have children and grow old together.

My name is Tara Picot and I am 24 years old. I was born Norfolk and I have lived in Chesapeake all my life. I am a senior graduating in May, my major is Busines Management and my minor is Psychology. I currently work for BB&T part-time and will probably continue on there after graduation. I am still undecided as to what particular position I want after graduation . After being a student for so long, it is hard to see myself in the corporate world. I am interested in Human Resource Management, but I do not want a carrer that leaves me chained to a desk 40 hours a week. I love to work with people, and would not want a job that leaves me isolated all day. I am engaged, I have dated my fiancee since high school. We are planning a May 2003 wedding. We have a dog who we treat like a child. He is a pitbull whose name is Menace. He is the very sweetest dog, contrary to his name! I live in the Chesapeake area and do not enjoy the commute to Norfolk for school everyday. The traffic and the parking situation at school is very frustrating. I am so glad I only have 4 months of school left! I have never taken an internet class before, and I am very excited about doing all the work at home and not having to go to class! My hobbies are reading, cooking, and going to the gym (when I am motivated!).

My name is Patricia Pietzsch(Peach) but friends call me Patty. So please call me Patty. I am thirty years old and am finally going back to school. This is my first semester at ODU and needless to say I am slightly excited but yet also nervous. I work full time at the Center for Arthritis. I am a Certified Medical Assistant. I supervise my office which includes doing all the quality control, ordering, and so on. The most precious thing to me is my daughter Raeven. She is eight years old and can always make me laugh. I enjoy lots of things but mostly bowling, reading, a good joke and playing with my little girl. I am going to school full time, working full time and a single mom full time. I know it is going to be hard in the beginning but hopefully I will find a peaceful way to balance all three successfully. My major is Human Services Counseling and I'm minoring in Psychology and Special Education. I am entering as a junior although I need to go a little longer then two years. I am eventually planning on getting my Master's in Counseling so I can be a guidance counselor. But until that time I plan to either work at a hospital doing human resource work or be a parole officer. I am looking forward to this class. I also hope that I will be able to figure out all the things necessary to use this computer. I hate to say this but I think my daughter is slightly better at this then me!

Hi everyone, my name is Brian Pittler. I was born in Baltimore, Maryland and grew up around the D.C. area. I now live in Spotsylvania, VA. I am a junior at Old Dominion University, and this is my second semester at the college. I have recently turned 20 and I have taken classes from Old Dominion, Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, VA, and about half of the community colleges in the state. I am a registered private investigator and I currently work for an insurance company that specializes in public and non-profit organizations, educator's legal liabilities, and local law enforcement liabilities. I am majoring in Criminal Justice with a minor in Psychology. Eventually, I will obtain a Bachelor's degree in Psychology. I have no idea how I am going to put my education to use, but I am leaning toward law school or the private sector of law enforcement. I am an active volunteer in my community; specifically involved in the fight against Diabetes and Multiple Sclerosis. I skate often and pretend to be good at it, and I am an avid trail runner. I am an accomplished sword collector and try to be active in the sport of Kendo, a Japanese form of sword fighting. For some reason every cat on the planet wants to be my best friend, so I do my best to care for the one's I come across. I also have a very loyal, friendly, stupid, and happy foxhound. I hate Magic Eye books; sorry, but I do.

I was born in Poland. My family came to the United States when I was two. My father had been involved in Solidarity (a movement against the communist government) and had to leave Poland. I have been back to Poland twice since we left and I feel very fortunate that I have that background but enjoy the luxuries of being a US citizen. I have three brothers and one sister. I am a middle child but was still very much spoiled as a child. I lost my mother six years ago so I have a very strong relationship with my father. My family is very important to me. We are as dysfunctional as they come but I think that everyone comes from a dysfunctional family in one way or another. I have lived in Chesapeake, Virginia since my family came over. I currently live with my boyfriend of three and a half years. We have lived together for a year and a half now but still have no plans to marry. Surprisingly, I am in no hurry to get married. I enjoy our relationship as it is now. We recently got two kittens. They are my children. They are four and a half months old. Their names are Leo and Abbey. Not only do I attend ODU full-time, but I am also working full-time. I am the manager of a video game store. It seems like a strange place for a girl to work let alone be the manager of but I really enjoy my job and don't consider myself

Hello! My name is Karen. I was born in Lewiston, Maine in 1966. Lewiston is a small factory town, the summers are cool, the fall is foliage is beautiful and the winters are harsh with lots of snow. I lived there until I was 20 years old with my parents and my brother. I spent every summer at our cottage on a lake in Auburn, Maine where my parents live today and it is simply breathtaking. After going to college for two years to become a Licensed Practical Nurse, I married my high school sweetheart who was in navy. We lived in Atsugi, Japan for the first three years of our marriage and we loved it. Our next duty station was in Memphis, Tennessee where my daughter was born. When my daughter was one we were transferred to Pax River Maryland for three years. Six years ago we moved to Virginia Beach and have been here ever since. I worked as an LPN for the first 5 years we were here, in a pediatrician's office and I loved it but unfortunately my paychecks started bouncing. I took that as a sign that it was time to go back to college to pursue a degree in counseling. So here I am. I am very close to my family in Maine and as far as I am concerned Maine will always be my home. My family and I hope to return there some day to live permanently. I hope to go on to graduate school to finish my education here at Old Dominion University. I really enjoy living in Virginia Beach.

Hi class, I am 24 years old and I have only two classes left to take and then I graduate in May. I have taken your classroom version of this last semester and got a horrid D. I know I will do better this time b/c I am familiar with the material. I live in Chesapeake, but I also spend a lot of time in Va Beach because my fiancee lives there. I was born in British Guyana, South America and my family came here when I was three years old. I have gone back to Guyana, but only one time when I was 13. I have been working at LensCrafters for over three years (I was the one that helped you with your glasses). August third, I am getting married and I'm getting excited about that. In September, I will be returning to school to get my optician's license. I have found that I am more interested in doing that right now than pursuing a career in psychology or counseling.

We also have two dogs, a cat, a bird, and fish. I work full time as Office Manager at Kempsville Middle School. My husband is a math teacher at Princess Anne High School. I am currently taking 3 classes (10 credits). We live very close to the Virginia Beach Higher Ed. Center, so I take as many classes as I can there. I am originally from Saginaw, Michigan. We have lived in Virginia Beach for most of the last nineteen years. My husband was in the Navy, he got out after eleven years and, like so many other former Navy, stayed in the area. After he got his Master's Degree, then it was my turn to go! My goal is to graduate with my Bachelor's Degree before my daughter graduates high school, which is June 2003. I should make it. Then I will start working on my Master's Degree. I want to teach Special Education, preferably at the elementary, or pre-K, level. I would love to get my Master's before my son graduates high school in 2005, but that probably isn't a realistic goal. Besides raising two teenagers, working and going to school, my husband and I teach the third through fifth grade Sunday School class at our church. I have enjoyed my psychology classes and look forward to trying one on-line!

Communications

This spring I will be graduating from Old Dominion University with a Bachelor of Science in Communications and a minor in Psychology. I've been attending ODU for two years, having transferred from Virginia Tech. I decided to major in psychology because mass communication holds my greatest interest. After I graduate I plan to start a career working in the television producing or the film industry. A friend and I have recently started working on a script, which I'd like to submit to an agent after I graduate. To help prepare myself for the dynamic entertainment industry, which is founded on business practices I plan to take night school graduate classes to work towards my master's degree in business administration. I've had several different jobs since I've been in the workforce. When I graduated from Kecoughtan High School I worked as a Geographic Information Systems intern at NASA Langley in Hampton. This lasted the summer and I was the youngest of the five person team. Two years ago I held an internship working as a Environmental Assistant with the Airforce in Oyster Point. We completed the first every Oracle based Environmental Impact Statement Online Database, which can be used by numerous government agencies. After leaving that summer internship I started another job working as the Project Coordinator at AMAC International located in Newport News. AMAC does research and development for cryogenic and superconductor machinery and instrumentation used in nuclear accelerators, most directly Jefferson Lab. There mission is to fold that also perform services as business representatives for US and European companies in China and elsewhere. This job was very dynamic and encouraged me to pursue a masters degree in business.

Hello, my name is Laurie Sandy and I live in Virginia Beach. I am 36 years old with two children, 10 and 12. I was born in Norfolk, VA and the youngest of seven children. There is a big age gap between me and my five brothers and one sister as I was a late-in-life baby. I am close to my siblings even though everyone has busy careers. My father was a fighter pilot in WWII and had a successful career with the government until he passed away 13 years ago. My mother still lives in this area and I enjoy spending time with her. I work full time as an assistant to the Product Services Manager for a leading power tool company. It's a great company, but unfortunately there is little room for advancement in my job. My main hobby is gardening and is a great stress reliever. I enjoy playing in the dirt even though some of my garden creations don't always turn out to be the way I envisioned them. I finished my A.S. in Social Science last July and decided to proceed with my education at ODU, as I am now a single parent. Pursuing this degree in addition to working and parenting is going to be quite a challenge for me. I chose the field of Psychology, as I was always interested in what factors contribute to the ways in which people act or react in various situations. My minor is currently Sociology, but I might change to Education. I am not yet sure what specific area of Psychology I will focus on in grad school. I have enjoyed reading each autobiography and wish everyone good luck with their education.

I have two associate degrees: one technical and one business. Most of my work experience is maintaining and troubleshooting computerized production equipment. I hope to use my technical experience to train in an industrial environment when I finish the ODU program. It is nice going to school full time without the responsibility of working but living on my meager savings equates to peanut butter sandwiches and tread bare tennis shoes. It sure was easier right out of high school when someone else was footing the bills. Experience is such a ruthless teacher!

???????????????

Born June 2, 1961, I spent my early childhood traveling up and down the East Coast with my family-settling in Tampa, Florida. In 1969 my father was diagnosed with neck and throat cancer and we moved to Richmond, Virginia so that he could be treated at the Massie Cancer Center at MCV. He died in 1974 after several surgeries and radiation and chemical therapies. I was thirteen, my brother was fourteen, and my sister was eight. My family moved from pillar to post during my teenage years, and after attending six different high schools I dropped out in the ninth grade. At seventeen I met the love of my life and six weeks later we were married. My daughter was born within two years, and my son four years after her. We celebrated our 23rd anniversary November 13, 2001. In 1986 my sister "bet" me that I could not pass the GED test, something she had just accomplished, so on a whim I decided to give it a shot. Four hours into an eight-hour test I found myself finished. It is a very uncomfortable feeling to discover that you are the first to finish a test. Finishing first could only mean two things-doing really good, or really bad! But I had done this on a whim, and the outcome was not a great concern to me. Three weeks later I received my score of 286 out of 300. Not bad for a girl who had never even seen algebra. In 1996 I received an associate degree in applied science and in 1999 I completed an associate in arts and science. I will complete my bachelors in professional communication in May 2002 and hope to start my masters program in the Fall of 2002. I work for-what else-an adult education office coordinating adult basic education and GED classes throughout four counties, located at Southside Virginia Community College, and my ambition is to become the director of that program, hence the master's degree. My passion is writing, and I have written and had published several poems and one personal essay. I am attempting a short story this summer with the hopes that it will be marketed. My husband is still the love of my life, and my daughter is married with one beautiful son and another child on the way. My son will soon be eighteen and has committed the next eight years of his life to the United States Marine Corp-his ambition is to be a "lifer". I spend my free time writing, raising dairy goats, and homesteading-sort of. I am a proud GED "pusher" and a firm believer that knowledge is power.

I grew up in MountainView California. My father was in the military and we moved to Chesapeake Virginia in 1999. I had three different schools my senior year because of this but I feel it made me more sociable. I worked retail at department stores to put myself through Tidewater Community College and received my associates in business in 1996. That fall I met my future husband. We were married in July of 1999 and moved up to Culpeper due to his job. I was ecstatic to find out I could continue my college with ODU at the local college located by my job in Warrenton. I work at a Hallmark store as a sales person and I am also in charge of doing the buying for the collectibles (e.g. Precious Moments, Cherished Teddies, Dept 56 villages, etc…) We have lived in an apartment for two years now and are awaiting the permits for our first home to be built in Lake Land'or in Caroline County. It is twenty minutes south of Fredricksburg. I have two cats that my husband found at his warehouse. They were just two weeks old when he found them and brought them home. Shadow is now one and a half years old and Chewbacca is nine months; raising them was a chore but well worth it. We also have one six-year old ferret we rescued prior to our marriage. We have lost three others within the last four months due to old age. I am eagerly awaiting the house so we can get a dog!

I was born in Arizona in 1979. I do not remember much from there, because my father moved us to Fort Monroe, here in VA. Shortly after I was born. He retired from the military at Fort Monroe and my family and I have been here ever since. I lived in the city of Hampton until recently, when I became engaged and moved to Newport News VA. I am a junior at ODU with about another year until I complete my degree. In addition to being a student, I am a full time dance instructor for the Academy of Dance and Gymnastics in Newport News. I teach tap, jazz and ballet to students who range in age from 3 years old to adults. My training in dance began when I was 8 at a local studio in Hampton. Since then I have performed in the Sugar Bowl halftime show in 1994, a showcase in New York City in 1995 and most recently was captain of the dance team for Richmond's arena football league in 2000. My pastimes include dancing, as could be guessed and planning my wedding. Between these two things and school, I am not left with much time. I wish everyone luck in the coming semester and looking forward to reading about you all.

Human Service Counseling

Hello, my name Raymond Shipman and I reside in Charlottesville, VA. I prayerful will be graduating from ODU in December with a bachelors degree in Human Service Counseling. I have been working on this degree for nearly 20 years now and I'll graduate with nearly 150 hours. I am the father of four wonderful children, make that 5. My wife and I just got guardianship of another young lady who is 17. My other kids are 16, 15, 7, and 2. I have been married for 7 years this time. My wife is also in school. She attends the University of Virginia, where she is pursuing a MD/Ph.D. She has been in school for 8 years now and will be finished on December 2003. I am currently working as a counselor at therapeutic boarding in Keswick, VA. I enjoy working in the community and I especially enjoy working with youth. After I finish this degree, I plan on attending Virginia Union's School of Theology. My life is pretty challenging, between my family, work, church and these 13 hours I am taking; there is hardly time for anything else. After I am done in school, I would like to continue my youth work. I am interested in setting up a youth center that would provide tutoring services as well as college prep sessions. In the past I have organized educational trips to spark interest in history for youth. Year before last I took 47 people on a Civil Rights/College tour. We visited Atlanta, GA; Tuskeegee, Montgomery, Selma and Birmingham, Alabama. Last year I took 57 people on an Underground Railroad Tour which took us to Baltimore, Dorchester County, MD (birthplace of Harriet Tubman), Wilmington, Del., Philadelphia and New York. I would like to continue to provide these types of opportunities for kids. We will see what God has planned. This is my first on line course and I must say I am quite impressed by the web site and the course set up. I am sure that this is going to be enjoyable. I wish you all God's speed.

I was born in Toronto, Ontario Canada, where I lived with my younger brother Matthew and my father Tom. I have three stepbrothers, including one that lives with me down here. I came to ODU for the sailing team two years ago. This was the best decision I have ever made. Through collegiate sports I have met some of the greatest people and have received excellent coaching. I also purchased a house two blocks from campus. Though it has been a lot of work, I have enjoyed every minute. I started sailing, technically before I was born when my parents sailed across the Atlantic Ocean while my mother was four months pregnant with me. I have continue sailing ever since. I have been part of the Canadian National Team for three years now and am now striving to attend the 2004 Olympics in Athens Greece. The boat that I will be competing in is a 21-foot boat that has three women, Deirdre Crampton, Lisa Ross and myself. I am the one that drives and controls the main sail. I have one more year of school, that is without the delay of the Olympics, and am planning to continue on to receive a masters degree in psychology. I have been lucky enough to travel to many foreign countries, including, Ecuador, South Africa, and the Bahamas to name a few. I am excited to see how this semester goes, because I have never taken an online class. Any questions that you have about Canada (which will never become the 51st state) feel free to ask.

Hi my name is Kristy and I am 20 years old. I am a Junior here at Old Dominion University. I am double majoring in Psychology and Human Services Counseling. I plan to get my Master's immediately after I graduate and eventually get my PhD too. I plan to be a psychologist and eventually open up my own practice. I am from Harrisonburg, VA and decided to attend ODU, because it was close to the beach. I love the beach!! I have one younger brother who is 19. I am also very involved in my sorority, Zeta Tau Alpha. I am currently the First Vice President. I work for Community Alternatives, and do discrete-trial behavioral therapy with an eleven year old autistic boy. I work with him in his home, and I love it! I love sports, shopping, and being outdoors

My name is Chris Smith and I am a 21 year old senior at ODU. I have lived in Chesapeake my whole life and just decided to stick around here and go to school. I have been working full time the whole time I have been in school, I really like my job and I hope they offer me a position upon completing school. I grew up working outdoors and it is really hard getting used to working inside at a desk all day, but it is a lot better than breaking my back every day. I was a roofer for a long time and that gave me the experience to get the job that I have now. I am a salesman for a wholesale supplier of exterior building products. It is a really fast paced environment and the job is really exciting. When I am not working or going to school I like to spend time with my girlfriend who is a high school teacher. We go out to eat a lot and go fishing and stuff like that. I hate the cold weather and can't wait for summer to get here. The only thing good about winter is hunting and striped bass season. When I am not doing any of those things I love to surf but we hardly ever get any waves worth getting wet for, so when they come I am out all day. Other than that I am a pretty goal oriented laid back guy who just wants to finish school so I can start my career and maybe a family some day. I thought an internet class would work well with my hectic schedule so I can't wait to see what happens. So far I have been a little confused because I am not an expert on the computer. But it's all going to work out. Well nice to meet everyone.

Mechanical Engineering

Hello, my name is Terry Smith, and I am 34 years old. I have lived in the Isle of Wight County area all of my life. I graduated from Windsor high school in 1985. It was during my junior year at Windsor High School that I met my wife Judy. We have been married for twelve years now, and have two kids. I have an eight-year-old daughter LeAnne and a four-year-old son Austin. I also should mention a four-year-old Basset Hound named Lady, which seems like a kid sometimes. After I graduated high school, I attended Tidewater Community College pursuing a degree in Business management while working at Norfolk Navel Shipyard as an Inside Machinist. Before completing my degree, I was involved in a very large reduction in force at the Navy Yard after working there for six years. I then postponed school and got accepted at Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School as a Marine Designer. The classes at the Apprentice School focuses heavily on engineering, which is what got me, interested in pursuing a career in mechanical engineering. I currently work in the Carrier Engineering Department at Newport News Shipbuilding, and have been employed here for a little over ten years. I first started pursuing my engineering degree at Thomas Nelson Community College, and received my associate's degree for engineering in 1995. I did not start attending ODU until two years later, so I could spend more time with my mom during her illness. Unfortunately, she passed away in August of 1997. My Dad fought a short illness last year and passed away in August of last year. I was really hoping they would see me graduate, but I like to think they still will. I will finish school this August.

My name is Catherine Sochor. Friends and colleagues call me Katie. I am twenty-three years old. My family consists of three sisters, a brother, and various nieces and a nephew. The boys in our family have been hopelessly outnumbered since the day my mom and step-dad were married. (My step-dad brought my three sisters into the marriage.) As a child, I had several interests. I love reading, writing, animals, children and music. All of these interests have flourished, as I have grown older. I've been a musician since the age of ten, and have enjoyed a wonderful chance of seeing what exactly that entails. As a high school student, it meant some time out of classes. As a college student, it granted a trip to England and a trip to Greece, plus a side trip to an Inaugural parade. I've been involved with children for as long as I can remember. In high school, I worked in a daycare class, and in college I volunteered as part of a special needs preschool program. Currently, I work in a daycare in the mornings, and in a preschool in the afternoons. It is the best feeling working with children, and showing them things they've never seen before. We each learn from each other. As for the animals, it's hard to explain how this evolved. I have always been interested in animals, and am a sucker for a cute face. It started out as a single hamster one summer, and now it's grown to ten. Two of these were rescued from a neglectful home, the rest I just couldn't resist. It must run in the family. My step-dad has many fish and many birds. Right now, we only have two dogs, which is the least amount of dogs we have ever had. I guess my student skills are rather poorly. This is my last class, which will (hopefully!) transfer to James Madison University for my BA in psychology. I've been a student forever (or so it seems!). I started at Rappahannock Community College my junior year of high school, and completed my associate's degree at JMU. In the past, I've noticed I seem to understand the material, but test poorly. Writing papers is hardly ever a problem. I'm really looking forward to this class!

Nursing

I am from Chesapeake, VA. I graduated from Deep Creek High School. I have lived in Virginia all of my life. I am 23 years old, and I will be 24 in a couple of days. I recently got engaged to a very wonderful man, whom I love dearly. We have not set a date yet for our wedding. This may seem strange to some of you, but I recently graduated last May with a degree in Criminal Justice; after going to school for all that time and now working in the field I do not like it. I have decided to go back to school for what I originally came for in the beginning. I am still getting used to the idea of the entire situation myself. In my spare time, I enjoy reading and I am interested in taking tennis lessons. Tennis seems like a very interesting sport to me. My fiancé and myself just moved to the Virginia Beach area, and it seems very interesting; I have lived in just about all the cities that tidewater area has to offer, and I like Virginia Beach the best. I have about 2 years before I will be finished with my second bachelor's degree. I am excited about it. I plan to move to the northern Virginia area after my second graduation; probably Dale City or Woodbridge. Upon graduation my goals are to start on my master's degree in nursing. I would also like to go on a trip to the Caribbean, and have a beautiful wedding.

My family consist of twelve girls and one boy, and my mom is the oldest, she recently moved to DC where she found a wonderful new job. She is a licensed clinical social worker and has been doing this for 19 years. I am an only child and love it. Human Services

Hello to all. I am exciting about participating in this, for me, unique experience of learning over the Internet. This is my third major career change, but the only one involving the need for a college education. You could say I am a late blooming, baby boomer! Even though I do not live in Virginia I was born in Roanoke, VA during WWII. We moved to Norfolk when I was five and I attended grammar school at Portlock Elementary. My family moved to New York when I was twelve years old, where I attended Junior then High School on Long Island. I moved to Buffalo, New York after graduation and lived there for ten years. Then my traveling began-Colorado, Europe, Mexico, Alabama, California, Idaho, Alaska and finally here in Arizona where I have been for ten years. Presently I am seeking a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Services Counseling at the Yavapai College site in Clarkdale, AZ through the Teletechnet program of Old Dominion College. I presently have an Associate Degree in Early Childhood education at Arizona Central College. Afterwards, I obtained my AMI Montessori certification at Montessori Education Center in Phoenix, AZ. My first career was as a Secretary/Bookkeeper. Then after studying and practicing Macrobiotics for fifteen years I became a full time Macrobiotic teacher and chef. During that time of giving classes, I had the most fun working with children. It seemed logical to turn to teaching them next. I am in my second year of teaching at Sedona Montessori School in Sedona, AZ. I know my Bachelor's degree in counseling will only add to my abilities to interact with children and their parents. Thus providing a more pleasant learning experience for all. I have been married and at present am adventuring solo. May I say I love learning and implementing this knowledge into my daily curriculum.

Hello! My name is Peggy Stocks, and I am a 20-year-old student at ODU's main campus. I am a third year, but I am a senior who is hoping to get some grad classes as an undergrad so my scholarship will help out! I am an only child with two awesome parents, and my Grandma lives with us. I also have a miniature schnauzer named Noel. I am very involved on campus. I am a Resident Assistant in Whitehurst hall, where I am in charge of a hall of freshman students. It is challenging and takes a lot of work, but the friends I have made makes the job worthwhile. I am also president of my sorority, Delta Zeta, after serving various other positions within my chapter. I also participate in a small group Bible study with some of my closest RA friends. I spent two semesters in the university choir, a year on the student senate, and attend various speakers and programs on campus. In the little spare time I have, I enjoy playing the piano (I have since I was 5) and singing. I have been musician at a small church for two and a half years now. I also love to write stories and poetry, and love to read books. I am also a very lucky girl who has a loving, understanding, and supportive boyfriend named Bobby. We've been friends since we were freshmen, and he is simply the world's greatest! J Despite being busy, I am a lucky girl who is trying to get the very best that college life has to offer!

Hello everyone! My name is Lorrie Stokes, I'm 25 years old, I was born in Richmond, Virginia, and I currently reside in Callao, Virginia. I graduated from Northumberland High School in 1994 with a business diploma. I have been happily married for almost 6 years to my high school sweetheart. We have one beautiful blond haired, blue-eyed, 5 year old daughter named Amanda. When I graduated high school in 1994 I started working at Levi's Strauss & Co. in Warsaw, Virginia. I worked there until February of 1999, when they shut down. When Levi's shut down they gave the employees a benefit package that is out of this world. They paid us a regular weekly salary for the next 8 months after closure, they gave 3 weeks pay for every year that we were employed with them (in a lump sum), we all received brand new gateway computers, and those of us that wanted an education, GOT IT!! Thanks to the financial support of Levi's, I graduated from Rappahannock Community College with an Associates Degree in Business Administration in May of 2001 (the first person in my family to ever graduate from college). I am now working full time for the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren as an Administrative Coop. They are helping me, financially, with my Bachelor's degree from ODU. I am currently majoring in Finance and hopefully, when I finish this degree I will come back and major in Computer Science. I never realized how important education is to me until I started working the blood out my fingers at Levi's. No kidding, working somewhere like that will make you think twice about getting an education and pursuing a career. Success has become a very important part of my life and when Levi's shut down, I vowed to myself that I would become successful!!

Human Service Counseling

I have been a stay at home mom for many years with three wonderful children. As my marriage was crumbling, I seized the opportunity to go back to school and I am so thrilled to be at ODU. I am a junior and chose the human service counseling field because I've always been the one who would give their coat, $5.00, a toothbrush, or whatever to a person in need and since high school I've been interested in psychology. Now that I've taken 12 hours of HSC classes and have interviewed "those in the field", I'm leaning more towards school psychology/guidance. Who knows, at the ripe old age of 37, I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up! In my spare time, I like to rubber stamp, get creative, watch my kids basketball games and sleep. Having been married to a Naval Officer for 17 years, I have gypsy in my blood, love to travel, lived all over the United States and I have had some of my own "European Vacations".

My name is Jasmine Trimeloni and I am presently a senior at ODU. My educational objective is to graduate at the end of this year with a B.S. in the HSC program. In the Fall I hope to intern at an addiction treatment facility. I am a recovering addict (16 years this Spring) and hope to help other recovering addicts with my degree and experience. I live with my husband, two aquariums filled with unusual creatures, and an 83 lb., huggable Pit bull named Roscoe. We live in the high desert of Arizona in a small town called Cottonwood (named after the Cottonwood trees that shed like snow in the springtime). When I have free time (what's that?) I enjoy writing poetry and short stories. When I finish my education I hope to fulfill a dream-to get published. Living in this beautiful green valley inspires me to create. I also enjoy painting, another expression that is moved by the beauty of nature. I am also a thrill seeker of sorts. I have taken a pilot lesson, went skydiving, hangliding, parasailing, windsurfing, and hot air ballooning. I believe in enjoying life and try to balance work and play. I look forward to this class even though my lack of computer skills will no doubt challenge me, but hey, I love a good challenge. I have been studying Psychology since my teen years. I love to study human behavior and find human nature fascinating. I am sure this class will teach me more about what makes us "tick". It should be at least 250 words. I am sure that you are an interesting person and we would like to know more about you. These will be posted in the Students' section of our web site.

My name is Theresa Veronika Tucker. Yes, this is how you spell Veronika , my folks are odd. I was named for my favorite aunt/Godmother, Veronika (Vera or Sissi, to only me). My first name was for the Austrian Empress, Maria Theresa. My family is mostly German and Austrian. I was born April 21, 1973 in Camden, New Jersey. I moved to Grafton, Virginia when I was six months old with my father, Peter and my mother Ruth. My father is a 6' 4" German citizen (to this day) who is very serious and quiet and my mother is a 5' 1" Italian that is very open and not too quiet! If you knew me in person, you would see how I got the gift for gab but the seriousness of my personality creeps out too. I love to read and be in the great outdoors and am particularly fond of doing both if at all possible. I have swum since I was 3 ½ years old. I have also played tennis most of my life and racquetball with my father, till we were unable to agree on who had the better score and how much better then him I really was. Now a days I run and though I'm only up to 2 miles, I love every cussing moment of it! As you can tell by my birth date I am a whopping 28 years old and I have a great 7-½ year old son, named Patrick Craig Tucker. I decided not to follow my parent's best advice and married a man that was 19 years my senior. Have you fallen over yet? I am now divorced and fighting one of the world's worst custody battles of most middle class people! Like War of the Roses, I'm just not trying to turn him and his dog into pate! I have worked for many places since I was 11 years old: babysitting, dry cleaners, Busch Gardens amusement park, Penn Jersey Subaru, Food Lion, The Grocery Store, a police department and finally where I am today and really like, CHRISTIAN AID MISSION here in Charlottesville, Virginia. I hope to add schoolteacher to this list, once my undergrad and graduate work is done. I still long for the FBI but am sure that two law enforcement officers in the family would be a little hard! I have an associates degree in General Studies, that I finished while I was already attending ODU classes. I'm majoring in Human Services Counseling with a minor in Psychology. I'm still playing with adding criminal justice as a second minor. I love the court system and am quite familiar with it but love children and teaching and playing with them so I am debating if teaching would be the better choice for my graduate work. I am also debating if I do my graduate work in education whether or not to go through University of Virginia or James Madison University. I have been able to move on in my road of life and met a wonderful man! Barry saw me at a local after five (pm) event. He figured he'd never see me again. Little did he know that we would see each other at a local sport's bar. He worked up the courage to snatch my cell phone as I was preparing to call a friend and programmed his home, work and cell phone numbers in it, simply stating that he hoped that I would use one or more of them on a regular basis. I did and we took the growing relationship slow by first becoming running partners, thus using the time to get to know one another. He is also divorced and has no children. Of course being the wonderful people we are we can only think what a wonderful idea it is to add children of our own to better the human race as much as possible. How much better can you get with a police Sgt for a father and a school teacher for a mother and the world's best kid for a big brother?? Thank you for not being too bored with my life.

I would like to get married and have 3.5 kids (.5 = a dog) and once my kids all start school, I'd like to start working on my Doctorate's degree. That's all folks!

Psychology

Hey Y'all, I was born in 1975 in the Naval Medical Center, Jacksonville Florida (Federal Reservation…no not a native American one..). I grew up all over this great world, some countries on the list include: Greece, Sicily/Italy, Israel and numerous places in the U.S.A. In all I calculated the time spent in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and found that I have lived here longer than any one place…. eight and one half years- almost nine- and counting. I am always apprehensive about sharing my hobbies. While I don't wear black robes and feast on road kill by the light of the full moon, according to the hypnotic chant of the talking heads on the glass toilet I am Satan incarnate. I am glad to see that Dr. Gillen has some similar pastimes ("Cowboy Action Shooting" You don't use any of those under power "Cowboy" loads do you?) Anyhow the good people of this country need to wake up and realize that their fellow citizens are not the real threat to their (or children's) safety. (Maybe we already have…) Could it be that I am a victim of brainwashing myself? That all those U-channel John Wayne movies indoctrinated me with a propensity towards such habits? Nahh, it was my mother. (That's a story in of itself, and thankfully it's a happy one! No Norman Bates here…) My other life activities include just waking up and getting through the day with a smile on me ol' face. Life's too short to take everything with a heavy heart. This philosophy has it's limits. Right now I am on Jury duty. This last judge I got was so super strict that he had all the jurors answer in unison…I fully expected Judge Jacobson to shout at us to sound off like we "had a pair". (No offense to the ladies). It was kind off like Boot Camp for Jurors. The case was an accident where fault was admitted, only damages need be determined (if any)…the guy who caused the accident had a smug smile on his face when he was told to face the jurors…my scowl wiped that off A.S.A.P. I was excused from jury duty soon after (by his lawyers request I assume…) In all a fun day. My politics: A libro-Biblo-Republicrat. My sign: Taurus….So I'm full of Bravo Sierra…. Year of the Rabbit in the Chinese calendar that means I'm supposed to marry a Horse or a Boar. (At least that's what the place mat at the Restaurant said…J). That's it for now, Adios, B.T.

Speech Pathology

I am Kimberly Vick; I prefer to be called Kim. I am currently attending school part-time while working full time as a campaign assistant for a charity. I am married, have two children, a dog and cat. I enjoy a variety of different activities from swimming, watching my children play sports to cooking and watching movies. My major is Speech Pathology and I am past the mid point. This is my 4th semester at ODU and I try to take as many classes off campus by teletechnet or web based as much as possible. I like going to main campus only when I have to. I am somewhat computer savvy, but sometimes I have trouble. I am taking the class to get more of the psychology reasons behind why people think and act like they do and for what reasons. I was late registering for this class and my book is delayed from Barnes and Noble, so I hope not to fall behind. I am eager to read more of the other bios and to hopefully meet individuals at the site during test time. I am really looking forward to Social Psychology.

Hi, I'm Donald and I am in my last semester before I student teach. I am excited about getting my new life started. I played around working on cruise ships for 7 or so years before I decided to grow up. Not only am I getting ready to finish school, I just got engaged to an amazing women. (she lives in Richmond, I work in Newport News, and I go to school mainly at the Home campus in Norfolk) This class makes it possible for me to participate no matter where I am! I thought that this class might provide some useful insight into the thoughts and actions of my future students. I also have taken a few internet courses and see the use of technology like this as the wave of education in the future (along with regular classes). This semester is likely to be somewhat crazy for me, but that seems to be the norm. Good luck to all and I look forward to chatting. JJJ

Exercise Science

I was born in Washington D.C. on December 14, 1973 (Yes, I am 28 years old. I am probably the oldest one in this class). I was raised by my grandmother, Leola Grace Wall. Who was a retired opera singer and musician. I spent my young years in Mobile, Alabama, during the time when the big hurricane Gloria hit. That was fun!!! I remember several trees hitting the house where we were staying. It was a memorable experience to see objects like patio screen doors and lawn chairs float by as if they were feathers. At age 10, I moved to Virginia Beach. My grandmother was needed to take care of her parents, Boyd Ingalls and Eva Ingalls. Have you seen "Little House on the Prairie"? I am some how related to the Ingalls Family, at least that is what I was told by my grandmother. I went to school at Arrowhead Elementary, Kempslanding, and Kempsville Junior High and Kempsville High School in Virginia Beach. I graduated from Kempsville High in 1992. During my junior and high school years, I played the cello and I became the top cellist in the state. After graduation, my grandmother got really ill. For several years, I worked several jobs and took care of my grandmother. I pursued my degree during this same period; however, it was a slow process due to the extra responsibilities at home. On September 16, 1998, my grandmother passed away. I was devastated and realized I had lost my sole mate. We were extremely close. Over the last several years, with out my grandmother, I have been "hitting the books" to finish my degree! I am excited, because I can see the "light at the end of the tunnel". I hope to complete my degree next spring (2003). I think my grandmother would be proud of all the hard work that goes into completing a degree. While completing my degree, I enjoy a fulltime career with the City of Virginia Beach, Department of Parks & Recreation as a Recreation Specialist. I specialize in youth fitness. I have a hobby, too. I am an avid ballroom/country western dancer. This February, I will be doing my first competition in Williamsburg. I am excited and nervous, but I hope this event will get my name on the map. It should be at least 250 words. I am sure that you are an interesting person and we would like to know more about you. These will be posted in the Students' section of our web site.

Medical Technology

Hello everyone! My name is Misty Whetzel and I am a 22 year old from Virginia Beach. I was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, but I have lived in Virginia Beach for almost 17 years. I graduated from Tallwood High School in 1997 and attended Virginia Commonwealth College in Richmond for one semester, where all I did was party all day and all night long. I decided that I needed to start taking school a little bit more seriously, so I moved back to the beach to attend ODU. I am a senior, and this is my last semester at ODU (I'll keep my fingers crossed). My major is Medical Technology, which is a field that took me a while to decide on, but it is one that I really enjoy. I changed my major to Accounting once, because I thought it would be an easy way out, but I realized I couldn't take classes that do not interest me what so ever. I think the psychology classes that I have taken have been the most interesting than any other classes, and that's why I decided to choose this course to fulfill my last upper level course that I need to graduate. I'm taking the Internet course, because I have internships up until the week before I graduate, so my schedule is going to be pretty hectic. I think that I have lived in Virginia long enough, so after I graduate, I plan to start my career elsewhere. Most likely I'm going to end up in San Diego, CA. For those of you that have been there, you know that it is a beautiful place to live, so I can't wait to go there. Hopefully after I move, I'll find a handsome guy with a good job, that will take care of me and my Chihuahua…..a Mercedes SLK convertible wouldn't hurt eitherJ.

Nursing

My name is S. Jeanne Wilson. I am fifty-two, I have been married thirty-three years to a wonderful man and have two lovely daughters. I met my husband when I was a teenager and knew he was the person I would marry. He has been my best friend for most of my life and my strongest supporter and biggest fan. When I was forty (and my children had graduated from college) I decided to follow my dreams and become a nurse. I enrolled in nursing school days and worked evenings and nights. I held a variety of jobs from janitor, to McDonald's, and nursing assistant while I attended college (and my husband did the cooking and cleaning). I graduated as the co-valedictorian of my class-not because I was the smartest because I wasn't-but because I was dedicated to becoming a nurse. I received my ASN and began working as a surgical intensive care nurse. This is a very intense and rewarding field for type A personalities, which I happen to be. I work 12-hour shifts going in at 7pm and getting off at 730 the next morning. And, believe it or not, I really Y my job. While working as a nurse I have been pursing my BSN-on and off-for many years as time and money permits. I will complete my coursework this summer and receive my bachelor's degree in nursing. In the meantime, I have been preparing to enter a MSN program this fall. I plan to expand my skills into administration and management. After all, I might get old one day and need to sit down for a while. J

Exercise Science

My name is Ryan Wood and I am 27 years old. I will be graduating in August with a major in Exercise Science and a minor in Psychology. Last year I was able to enter the study abroad program for the spring semester and studied at Keele University in England. This was a wonderful experience that I had always wanted to do. The situation with my fiancée was under great amounts of stress because of my leaving to go abroad. We decided to have her come out and stay with me for the duration of my time in England. She does not like to travel or fly so the entire trip was very hard for her, but we got married on April 7th 2001 in Newcastle, England. For our honeymoon we traveled through Scotland, France, Germany, Belgium, Holland and Switzerland. This was a life experience that I would gladly do again. At the moment I am taking 15 credit hours and attending the Kaplan pre-MCAT course 14 hours a week. I am also a personal trainer at ATC fitness and semi-retired bodybuilder. I will be taking the MCAT on April 20th, 2002 and hopefully be accepted to medical school. My plans for the future are to become a medical doctor, put my wife through court reporting school and eventually be able to buy a house and have a child! The one thing that I want for everyone, especially my wife and I, is to be able to enjoy life, be happy and appreciate all of the little things that we so often neglect.

Peninsula HEC

???????

My name is Sandra D. Woodyard. I am 38 years old and married with two children--ages 4 and 11. My major is in Psychology and my minor is Business Management. I really enjoy the subject of Psychology, but also Business. I have been living here, in Virginia, for a little over a year now. My interests are reading, listening to music, and of course spending time with my family. My husband is in the U.S. Air Force and is stationed at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia. We moved here from Enid Oklahoma (his last base assignment). I am prior active military; I was in the U.S. Navy for five years. I got off active duty after marrying my husband due to the difficulty of getting stationed together. But I am currently in the Navy Reserves, and enjoy it very much. Unfortunately, if I am called to active duty, I may have to drop my classes, but we'll see. At the moment, I am currently taking courses at the Peninsula Center (in Hampton, VA) as well as at the main campus, in Norfolk. But this is my very first time taking an internet course. So I must admit, I am very uncomfortable about it. I had always avoided them, but my husband suggested that I try it. He also stated that I will get the hang of it. Well, unfortunately, I haven't yet. I was contemplating dropping the course, but I didn't -- so here I am. It's not that I don't like the subject of Social Psychology (I enjoy most Psychology courses), but that I am still uncomfortable with having to work on the internet with a class. It's also kind of difficult not being able to see nor talk to the instructor-- as in a normal class-room setting. I've actually taken a couple of distant learning courses which were similar, but they didn't involve the use of the internet. I wasn't a big fan of those either -- but I did okay. But it's funny though, even after what I've said about internet classes, I'm sort of looking forward to it, now. I'm sure it's going to be quite challenging to me -- especially since I have to remind myself to get on the internet, find out what my assignments are, and then do them with the use of the internet. But once I get the hang of it, as my husband says, I should be okay -- I guess. Who knows, I may even get comfortable enough to take more classes on the internet.

Psychology

Hello. My name is Arlana D. Young. I am a 21 year old, senior here at Old Dominion University. I plan to graduate in the fall semester of 2002. I was born and raised in Hampton, VA. After graduation, I plan to attend graduate school for Human Resources Management if I cannot obtain a job right after graduation. I also plan to relocate to Maryland to be close to family members. I stay on campus in Powhatan Village. I have enjoyed staying on campus all my four years at this university, because I was able to obtain the whole college experience and I have developed some long-term friendships with people that I will cherish. I have been able to join an illustrious sorority, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., where I have been able to do a lot for the community, and take part in several programs on campus that were a benefit to the students. I also participate in other school activities such as Black Student Alliance and NAACP. I stay very busy on campus not just with schoolwork, but also with my three campus jobs. I work in Koch Hall as an accountant assistant, in BAL at the Social Science Research Center as a telephone interviewer, and with event staff during the basketball games. I know this all seems a bit much, but I have responsibilities and I believe that God gives me strength and wisdom to deal with all of this. This school semester will be very interesting for me and I plan to work very hard to excel in this course.

English/Creative Writing

Hello all. My name is Elizabeth, I am a (gulp) 25 year old divorced mother of one little bugger named Rowan. This is my last semester, finally. I started at Radford University in 1994, quit school to live on a commune, got married in a sweet waterfront ceremony, thought it would be fun to have a baby......After realizing that a commune in the mountains isnt the best place in the world AFTER all, and growing tired of sharing my sheets, i left and moved here to be closer to my family. My husband and i split after 2.5 years and ive been a single mom since. My daughter and i live in norfolk with our 2 cats, seamus and dirk diggler. I work full time now in the shipping industry, importing all kinds of goodies into our fine country. This is my last "U" requirement, as i am an english major without a minor. I really wanted to make my poems better, and now that i have succeeded, i am ready to move on, out of school, into the world of writing. Im looking forward to this class; hopefully i will learn a little about myself and everyone else in the process. After I graduate I am planning to move out west to seek contentment and some sort of spiritual guidance from my best friend, who currently lives in the desert in Utah. Hopefully this will prove fruitful and my daughter wont think im a nut when she gets old enough to reflect!

Communications

Ok, I'll first tell you guys the stuff that you expect to hear: I'm 21 years old. This is my 6th semester at Old Dominion. I started out as a freshman at Virginia Tech and loved it there but had to transfer here because there were some major health problems in my family. Old Dominion was a transition for me since I didn't have the opportunity to live on campus as I had at VT. I have found out that even though ODU is different than many other colleges, it's a great place to get an education and I'm glad that I choose to come here. I don't have a lot of hobbies to speak of. My favorite thing in the world is spending time with my fiancé, Josh and my close group of friends. I love being with all of them because they are all the type of friends that can just hang out somewhere, even in the most mundane places, and still have a wonderful time together. Josh and I are getting married in June. Some people are so scared of marriage now that they almost dread hearing the word. I guess I want everyone to know this about me-I still believe wholeheartedly in Marriage. My mother and father were married for 33 years and my parents were committed to each other through absolutely everything-even up until the time when my mom died of cancer this past summer. I believe that while it's difficult, it can also be very wonderful and totally worth the effort it requires. So there…that's me and all of my ramblings. I hope you all have a wonderful semester!
