Psychology
My name is Danita Anthony. I am 24 years old and currently a junior at Old Dominion. I work as a Secretary for United States Joint Forces Command in Suffolk, VA. I am a wife and mother of one rambunctious 19 month old. Currently I am pursuing my Bachelor's degree in Psychology. I am a veteran of the Air Force. I enlisted in the military one week after my sophomore year ended at Old Dominion in May of 1997. I separated from the military in September of 2000. I was born and raised in the Hampton Roads area. So after my military career was over my family and I packed up and moved back into the area from beautiful Colorado Springs, Colorado. This will be my second semester returning to school and I am very excited. I don't like starting projects without completing them so that was part of my motivation to return. The other reason for me returning is that I want to be able to provide for my household better. I love my job but I would love to be able to make more money and my degree is the key to doing that. Right now I am sacrificing time and energy to complete what I started. I have two younger siblings, a brother that is twenty-two and a sister who will turn twenty next month. All of my family has been very supportive of my return to college and are anxiously waiting for me to graduate. I am very excited and motivated to do what I have to do to get my degree. I am really looking forward to this new experience of having an online class, and I am anticipating a great outcome.

Human Counseling Services

I was born into a family of 16 children in Maryland. A wonderful family adopted me and Virginia became my home. They had a working farm and were foster parents to 13 children. Other than that I had a normal childhood.
I have three grown children, two boys and a girl, and have been married for 31 years. My family has supported me in trying to get my degree for the last 30 years. Two years ago I received my Associates Degree and am currently trying to get a degree in Human Counseling.
Another goal in my life is to become a published writer. I have had two poems published and at this time I have three magazine articles submitted to different publishers. The rejection note is my major response from publishers.
My hobbies are varied, from baseball, to reading and including archery and shooting guns for recreation. There are so many new things to try I never get bored with life.
The most important place in my life belongs to Christ. I have worked with teenagers in the church for years. I find them honest and fascinating. They are sometimes overwhelmed with the fears and problems of life and society. The Crisis Pregnancy Center is also an organization where I have spent my time. My biggest problem is not having enough time to do all the things I would like to do.
I seek my Counseling Degree with the hope I can work in the school system to make a difference in the lives of hurting children.

Human Services Counseling

I was born in Southwest Virginia but my father was in the Army and our home was mostly in Germany. I began school in Munich, Germany and graduated in Heidelberg, Germany. We had a few stateside tours in between but I would not trade the life I have had for any other. Being in Europe allowed me to visit numerous countries and learn the cultures of many.
I am a 48-year-old single mother with two daughters, ages 26 and 13. My older daughter is a graduate student at East Tennessee State University and in the ROTC, and the younger will be an upcoming freshman at Northwood High School. I decided to move back to this area when my second child was ready for kindergarten and my older daughter was ready for high school. The area in which we lived had weapon checks at the schools daily.
Returning to school has been enjoyable. I was apprehensive at first because I knew I would be older than most other students, however both young and old students all have one thing in common and that is the desire to learn. I have notice that this desire to learn supersedes any age barrier in my experience thus far.
I will be a senior in the fall in the Human Services Counseling curriculum. I am most interested in Substance Abuse Counseling, however, Domestic Violence Counseling ranks a very close second in what I see as my future. I have done volunteer work in both of these types of facilities and both, although at times frustrating, are a challenge that I am anxious to confront.

Electrical Engineering Technology

My name is Tim Balcom. I have been married for 24 years to my lovely wife Lori and we have three wonderful children. Our oldest son, Alex, is employed by Disney in Orlando, Florida and attends college part time. Our daughter, Lesley, is graduating from Christiansburg High School on June 2 and our youngest son, Jordan, is in the seventh grade.
We moved to Virginia in 1982 when I started to work for Federal Mogul in Blacksburg as an Electrical Designer. I am now a Project Engineer for the Powertrain Technology Group based in Blacksburg. I began taking classes at ODU in 1996 to complete my degree. I have only to complete three classes this summer to graduate.
I like to travel with my family. We have visited Germany, France (twice), England, Mexico and Canada, as well as most of the states on the eastern seaboard. We own two timeshares, which makes it extremely easy for us to arrange accommodations. I also travel for my job. My next trip may be to China to commission a new processing line. Hopefully I can fit it into my school schedule.
I look forward to taking this class and I think I will like the flexibility of being able to work ahead. My family and I are planning on a Myrtle Beach trip in June and a trip to see Alex in July.

Human Services Counseling
I am a senior at ODU majoring in Human Service Counseling. I plan to graduate in May of next year then possibly go on to graduate school at East Carolina University to get my masters in Social Work for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. I currently work as a Sign Language Interpreter in postsecondary education. I also do some freelancing on the side as time permits. I plan to stay in this field of work even after I graduate. I love my job and love the spontaneity of it. I am doing something different everyday so I never get tired of the monotony. In addition to going to ODU, I am studying to take the National Certification Test for Interpreting from Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. I am very involved in my profession. I serve on several boards, and am the co-editor for our local interpreting newsletter.

On a personal level, I live in Knightdale, NC with my husband and our "four-legged" son, Undertaker. He is a three-year-old Jack Russell Terrior, or terror as my husband would say. My hobbies are working in the yard, playing with my dog, riding my bike, reading a good book, and walking/running. I also love to travel. Two years ago my husband and I went on a cruise to the Caribbean. We went to Cazamel, Mexico, Caymen Islands, and Jamaica. In a couple of years we plan to take another cruise to the Eastern Caribbean. One day I hope to visit Australia, and Italy.

I don't have any children yet, but I am looking forward to finishing school and starting the next chapter of my life. In the meantime, I enjoy playing with my seven nephews.

Nursing

I was born in Livonia, Michigan on August 8, 1969. I have 1 brother that is exactly 361 days older than I. My family moved out to the countryside of Monroe, Michigan when I was 4 years old. Monroe is about 40 miles south of Detroit, Michigan and 30 miles north of Toledo, Ohio. I spent much of my childhood enjoying the country living with my brother and our dog Catherine while riding bikes, motor bikes, swimming, climbing trees, and spending time on our boat on Lake Erie. The winters were beautiful and I have many fond memories of snowmobiling, skiing, skating, and sledding. I don't know why the cold never bothered me as a child. I often would have icicles hanging from my eyelashes and hair before my mother could convince me to come inside for dinner.
I attended Monroe High School, one of only two high schools in our small town. I found an after school job working as a dental assistant for an Endodontist (a dentist that specializes in root canals), Periodontist (gum specialist), and Oral Surgeon. It was then that I became interested in a medical profession. After graduating high school in 1987, I attended Monroe County Community College. My dental assisting job assisted me to pay for my education. I moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan (home of the University of Michigan) when I was 18 and worked full time while attending nursing school. I graduated nursing school in 1990 at the very tender age of 20 and it didn't take me long to realize that I still had so much to learn.
In 1993 I moved to Richmond, Virginia. I felt as if I had moved to another country. It is amazing how the culture here differs from that in Michigan. I married my soul mate Stan in July of 2000 and we were blessed with our first daughter Erin exactly 9 months later. My Catholic grandmother was so pleased. We were so happy with our first we decided to try for another and I am presently 14 weeks pregnant and due in November.
My hobbies include long distance biking (on hold for now) music, taking naps, and spending time with my hubby, our two dogs, two cats, in our house on the James River. I am working as a Registered Nurse, Kidney Transplant Coordinator at Henrico Doctors' Hospital. I am looking forward to finishing my BSN. I my future plans include graduation, and then taking a nice long nap.

My name is Laurie Bice. I am 24 and currently an ODU student majoring in Psychology and minoring in Criminal Justice. I hope to graduate in 2003 so that I can start law school in 2004. I work full time in the Recovery Dept. of a bank in downtown Norfolk while also attending classes when I can. I have just recently become engaged to a wonderful man named Chris, who is a chief in the US Navy stationed in Norfolk. We're planning on getting married June 7, 2003 and maybe transferring to Charleston, SC in Dec., 2003/Jan., 2004. We just recently came back from Charleston on Monday and it was absolutely great...I'm ready to move now! J
My family is somewhat large but we're really scattered between VA, NJ, and TN. I have three older half-brothers; Chris, the youngest, is ten years older than I so you can imagine the torment I received as a child! I also just recently was graced by the birth of my nephew, Austin Ray Jackson, who was born May 7, one day before I got engaged, which made everything more special. He is a healthy baby boy, who weighed 8lbs. 7oz. and was 21 inches long (big boy). My brother has already informed me that I'll be doing lots of babysitting this summer since he was mine when I was young (11 years older). Of course I don't mind this at all! I hope to have a family of my own one day, probably after being married for a year or two at least. Although I will be gaining two step sons (7 & 8) when Chris and I are married.
I hope this will be a very interesting and enjoyable class, as this is my first internet course. Good luck to all and may we all get A's!

My name is Jeanne Boatwright. I live in Charlottesville, Virginia, where I was born, and raised. I am thirty-six years old. I am a fraternal twin to a female sister. We were the largest set of twins with identical weights (6 pounds, 12 ounces). We were born six minutes apart. Our weight seems to be the only thing we have had in common. We look nothing alike, and most people don't believe we are even sisters. It is different being a twin, but interesting. We participate in a twin study for MCV. I also have two older sisters.
I work as a nurse at the University of Virginia hospital, in the medical /surgical area. It is a busy job, but interesting. I am always learning something new. I take care of a wide variety of people. I could have anything from an AIDs patient, to a patient with end stage renal disease. I see a lot of deaths. I see a lot of sick people. It makes me treasure each day more.
I am taking this class because it is my last class that I need to receive my bachelor's degree in nursing. It seems I was one class short. This was the most interesting course. I have never taken a web base class. I'm just hoping I can send this in the proper manner.
I am currently engaged. This is our first marriage, and we have no children yet. I am getting married June 1st. I realize this is only two weeks away, and I sometimes get a little panic. There is a goal to this madness. My advice is to always elope. This day is not about you, but about others, that have all sorts of ideas on how you are doing it wrong. We are going to Ireland, and I can't wait.

CRJS & Psych Major
I was born in grand Junction, Colorado in May 1976. I was only there for a year when my parents moved back to their hometown Fontana in southern California. I remained there and received my high school diploma from A. B. Miller high school in 1994. After high school I worked at a Smith's grocery store, working the nightshift, unloading the grocery trucks. At the same time, I was going to Chaffey Community College in Rancho Cucamonga, CA. In 1996, I was laid off because Smith's decided to move to a different state where the competition was not so tuff. From there I did some volunteer work at a local elementary school and enjoyed working with the kids. From there I was offered to tutor an autistic child of two married Doctors my mom worked with. They paid for my training, which was founded by Dr. LoVass, at UCLA. For 8 weeks, at 40 hours a week, I was trained in the medical perspectives of autism, extreme behaviors, and client counseling techniques. Before I received my certification, I had to be supervised tutoring an autistic child for 2 hours by the centers psychologists. To keep my certification I had to conduct a supervised session every month. Once I received my certification from the Center of Autism and Related Disorders (C.A.R.D.) I worked privately for the doctor family and received a job working with autistic children for the Superintendent of schools for San Bernardino County for the 1996-97 school year. I enjoyed my job, but I was really worn out from the 13 autistic children from ages 5-8 that I worked with. At the end of the year, I graduated from Chaffey College with an A.A. in general education, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. I was offered a scholarship to become a special education teacher for the county of schools, but I declined.
I went to boot camp in June of 1997 under the navy's advanced electronics computer program in Great Lakes, Illinois. I spent 13 months there for training when I was sent to Fleet Training center in Virginia Beach for 6 months. From there I was sent to the USS Enterprise (cvn-65) for 4 years to work on their GPS systems. While on the USS Enterprise, I took part in NATO operations in Kosovo and operation southern watch in Iraq. In February 2001 I was selected to go back to school, while received full pay and benefits for up to 3 years, to become a naval officer. From there, I left the ship and went to officer candidate school in Newport, Rhode Island. I started school in fall of 2001 at ODU and chose Psychology and Criminal Justice as my majors. That is what brings me to this social psychology class.

My name is Marwan Cameron and I'm a senior at ODU. This is my last semester and my first web based course. I'm a business major and have done almost all of my classes via video stream. It has been really nice to be able to watch class while having all the comforts at home (sometimes it is hard to stay awake.)
I love to watch movies. I'm still pretty sleepy from standing in line 2 hours to see the new star wars movies at 12:15am. It was worth it.
I am one of 12 adopted children of a single father. My father is a Baptist minister and a principal. Growing up was pretty strict. Strangely most people think we look alike. I am not sure if I can handle 12 children, but I do plan to adopt some children in the future.
Another thing I like to do is play dominoes. I believe that I am the best domino I ever met. Even though my name is Marwan, I often introduce myself as B.O.B. Boss of Bremerton. I have spent countless hours playing this game. There have been times when I have played over 10 hours straight. I mostly play for fun, but I also play for money. I have won over 10 thousand dollars playing dominoes against people. I haven't been able to play much this year, but I hope to start a new tournament this summer.
I think most people would tell you that I am laid back and I like to laugh.

Human Services Counseling
I was born and grew up here in Southwest Virginia and lived here for nineteen years. When my late husband, who was in the U. S. Marine Corps, and I married, we moved away. For the next eighteen years, we moved to several states, including spending two years in Norfolk when we were first married. We lived in South Carolina, California, and North Carolina, before he retired from the Marine Corps in 1991. After his retirement, we lived in Tennessee for six years, prior to his death.
I moved back to Southwest Virginia four years ago to be closer to my family and to give my son a sense of family also. My son will be sixteen in June and will be a junior in high school next year. I decided to go back to school 3 years ago and complete my Bachelor's Degree, which I had started about 30 years ago! I am now completing a degree in Human Services Counseling in August and at the present time; I am working with the District III Senior Citizens Services for my internship requirement. Thus far, it has been a rewarding experience.
I have enjoyed living in various states and have made friends whom I still keep in touch with today. At times it was hard moving and starting over each time in a new location, a new neighborhood, or a new job. However, I have been able to see many parts of the country either through living there for a time or through driving across the United States on two cross-country trips. All in all, I would say that I have lived a full life and have seen many interesting places and met many interesting people along the way.

As a 42 year old mother of four, going back to college the same year my oldest began his freshman year was, to say the least, scary. I had tried to do the "college thing" back in the 70's after graduating from high school, but cupid shot his arrow and the next thing I knew, I was married to a naval officer and on my way to Japan for three years. The marriage probably would have worked if the guy hadn't been such an arrogant bastard with archaic notions of how a military wife was supposed to behave. The relationship produced two wonderful sons, so I must have liked the guy a little - at least twice.
After 12 years in this purgatory I realized there was more to life than being somebody's wife or somebody's mother, so I left and went in search of "me." I found my niche in emergency medicine, becoming a paramedic with a local urban 911 service. It was my heart and soul - until I met Sam. Not only was he self-assured, intelligent, and handsome, he was secure enough in his own right to not feel threatened by my accomplishments and goals. We married after living happily in sin for about a year, and immediately started producing offspring. My oldest daughter was born the day before taxes were due - we refer to her as our favorite IRS return.
My career in the fire department and my marriage were strong and fulfilling - and it was during my pregnancy with my second daughter that I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Sam says I went through the five stages of terminal illness in about five minutes, everything from disbelief, to bartering with God, to acceptance and finally facing the disease head on. Abigail was born five weeks early, and two stages of extremely aggressive chemotherapy began. The second round of drugs nearly killed me, but I was far too stubborn to let something as minor as cancer stop me. I mean, Sam is a wonderful guy, but how could I leave him to dress two daughters for proms?
So I beat the disease, lived through the surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatments to return to work and complete the fire academy as valedictorian, only to have my medic unit struck by a drunk driver while I was saving a man pulled from a house fire in cardiac arrest. The accident destroyed the integrity of my back. The patient lived, but I was medically discharged from the fire service. So what was I going to do with the rest of my life? What I did best, of course - helping people feel better. So here I am, finishing my B.S. in Health Science and on my way to medical school to become a physician's assistant. I should graduate Old Dominion the same year my younger son graduates high school, and EVMS the year my oldest son graduates from VCU. Oh well, at least my GPA is higher than theirs.

Psychology
My name is Susan Deeds, and I am in my last semester at ODU. I am Psychology major with a minor in Marketing. I am currently employed at the Virginian-Pilot in the advertising department. This place gets a little out of hand at times but it's a good job. I think because there are constant deadlines and it is a daily newspaper. I grew up in Germany, and just had my birthday last week on May 9th. I love my birthday. I am one of those really obnoxious birthday people that start with a month countdown. Growing up in Germany was wonderful. I was able to travel everywhere, plus my dad made sure that we did. I moved here four years ago, not knowing a soul, but soon discovered how friendly it is here. My parents commented on that over the weekend. I didn't really notice it anymore, but I guess they are right. I think Norfolk is a great place and is only getting better. I had to write a bio today for my high school reunion and I didn't know what to say with that either. All I know is that I'm going to be in New Orleans for the reunion and it will be so cool. Our high school closed down because the base we lived on closed. So we just pick a city for our reunions. It's fun that way. If I wasn't writing this down I think it would be easier for me. I am really talkative. And I would say that talking is one of my favorite things to do. And that should be about it. I hope everyone has a great summer!

Speech and Language Pathology
Hello, My name is Nycholle Gater and I am a Junior/Senior here at ODU. I am currently majoring in Speech and Language Pathology and Audiology, and I have a strong interest in Psychology. I am considering a dual major. I am 31 years old married to a wonderful supportive husband Darrick with four beautiful children, I have two girls Brittany, Amber and two boys Colby and Devin. I was very fortunate to be able to stay at home with my children until my youngest started Kindergarten. I was born in Virginia and I do love it here. I tour the area with my children we have been all over Virginia doing weekend trips to Monticello, Natural Bridge and the Roanoke. We do a lot of school projects and whatever they are studying I try to reinforce it by visiting. We have traveled a little in the US, but no real big trips.
Having said all that you may wonder what do I enjoy to do with my free time……. "sleep". I pray for the days I can sleep until 7:30 or the nights I can go to bed before 1:00 or 2:00 in the morning. I also pray for the day when I can take my kids on a vacation without packing a book bag. I am very easy going I love nature hiking is probably my favorite sport. With the kids I like to be silly like racing with them to role down a hill or racing my kids to the car. On the other hand my husband is a bit more conservative so I like to pinch his buns when were out walking just to make him laugh and when all five of my people are happy that's when I am happiest. I enjoy planting flowers and watering my garden. I love to read especially the books without pictures. I enjoy taking care of pets my husband teases that I should be studying to be a Vet because I have a real love of animals. I care for everything snakes, spiders, hamsters, dogs, cats…. You name it. I am the neighborhood Vet tech. I can tell you what you need 90% of the time. If it needs mothering or shelter I've got a place for it. My husband says, "Our home isn't habitat for humanity". I want my children to treasure and respect life at every level we all have a purpose here.

I was born in Dinwiddie County, Virginia in 1953 and given the name Margaret Ann Stone. My parents nicknamed me Peggy and to this day that is what everyone calls me, most people don't even realize that my name is Margaret. I had a wonderful childhood, growing up on a tobacco farm with four brothers (I didn't realize how good it was until much later in life). I was very active in high school sports including softball and basketball. I graduated from Dinwiddie County High School in 1972 and that fall attended Southside Virginia Community College. In January 1974, I married my husband of 28 years, J. N. I graduated from SVCC in June of 1974 with an AS in Secretarial Science (the word secretary is now obsolete). My first son, Jamie, was born in June 1976 and my second son, Jody, was born in 1979. One of the highlights of my life, other than my family, was playing softball in a mixed league and winning the world USSSA in 1989. This was a moment I will never forget. When my youngest son graduated from high school, I decided it was time to get my degree. Since I had been working for several years in the accounting department, I decided to go for an Accounting Major. I am presently working full time for an Australian mineral sands mining company (titanium minerals) and taking night and weekend classes to obtain my degree. I enjoy Winston Cup Racing (Elliott Sadler fan), reading, gardening and I love the beach.

I have one sister named Julie and she is 17. I have a cat named Thomas; he is 2 years old. My hobbies are playing soccer and running. I played soccer for 10 years until I hurt my knee. I really enjoy spending a great deal of my time at the beach in the summer. Traveling is one my favorite things to do with my spare time and money. I have traveled a lot in my 22 years. I have been to every state on the East Coast. Walt Disney World has been another one of my favorite places to visit. I backpacked through Italy last year with a good friend of mine. While I was in Italy we visited almost every big city Rome was my favorite. My next big trip is West Palm Beach FL where I will be going the week after graduation. When I graduate I plan to go into Pharmaceutical Sales. I love to sell. Most of the jobs that I have had were in sales. I have sold everything from water filtration systems to cell phones and post cards. This summer I have another exciting sales job where I will be distributing sun tan lotion throughout the Hampton Roads area (mainly in VA beach). Graduation and getting a job are the two big concerns in my life at the current moment.

I have lived in southwestern VA my entire 28 years of living and I must love it here because I haven't moved anywhere else. My immediate family, which includes my mother, step-father, older sister, and younger brother, all live within 15 miles of me. I call myself single but am actually separated from my husband of four years and we have a three year old daughter whose name is Leah. She is my inspiration for everything that I do. I have two associate's degrees: one in general studies from PHCC, and the other in applied science from the College Of Health Sciences (concentration in occupational therapy assisting). I worked in the OT field for three years before deciding to continue my education with a counseling degree. This is my first semester at ODU as a teletechnet student and I absolutely love it! My future plans include finishing my bachelor's degree with a major in HSC and a minor in psychology by summer 2003. My ultimate goal is to obtain a master's degree in counseling education where I would like to work at the college level. I would love to be a professional learner for the rest of my life but somebody has to pay the bills, so I figured that the college could pay me instead of the other way around. This is my first experience with an internet class and I am very anxious and excited to get it underway!

I am 43 years old and a single parent of two sons. I was born in Gambrills,Maryland a small town near Fort Meade, Maryland. At an early age, I movedto College Park, Maryland where I attended elementary and junior high
school. When I turned nine, my mother remarried and we lived in CollegePark for another four years; then we moved toBaltimore, Maryland with mystepfather. We lived uptown, which at the time was considered a nice area
to live. I graduated from Northwestern High School in 1977 and attendedCoppin State College from 1979 to 1980. I had became pregnant for thesecond and decided it would be best for me to drop out, because it was too
hard for me to be a full-time parent and a student at the same time withtwo small children. But I was determined to return back to school no matterhow long it took. We lived in Baltimore another ten more years, then
decided to moved to Farmville, Virginia, my father?s hometown. The city?scrime rate was on the uprise and I felt that it wasn?t the best place toraise two small children and plus I had wanted to get out of a relationship
that hadn?t gotten off of ground zero to begin with. And I really knew itwas time to go when a known drug dealer got shot and killed on the sameblock where I lived and my children played. So to make a long story short,
we moved here to Farmville, Virginia, I resumed my education in the 1991and graduated with a AAS in Human Services in 1996. When I realized thatthe degree would only take me but so far, I decided to return to earn my BS
in Human Services Counseling with expected graduation in the fall of 2003.I really enjoy working with people, especially children. There is such agreat need to help the young people of this world today and try our best to
steer as many as we can in the right direction. After all, their future mayvery well depend on our tomorrow.

Hey! My name is Tonya Hurt and I am in my second semester of the Human Services Counseling program. I am from Richlands - AKA "the boonies". I am currently employed in the Financial Aid office at Southwest Virginia Community College and am very involved in student activities. I am the advisor for the Student Government Association, Director of the Miss SVCC pageant, and Cheerleading Advisor. I am married to a wonderful man, Jamie, who is also a state employee with the Virginia Department of Corrections. I have one daughter, Lindsey Paige, who is 10 years old and into everything! Aside from my duties here on campus, I am very active in my daughter's life as well. I coach the Greenwaves Cheerleading Squad for grades 5-7, and am an assistant coach for her Little League Softball Team, the Yankees. I am very active with the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life being on the Planning Committee for 2 years now. In my spare time, like I have any, I enjoy playing softball. I currently play on a Women's League and with a Co-ed team. I enjoy traveling on the weekends to play in various tournaments. My future goals include completing a Bachelors Degree in Human Services Counseling and expanding on that with a Masters Degree in Counseling and Student Personnel. I would like to be in a position to work with Student Activities as a career and help young people as much as possible. I would also like to implement a sports program within the Virginia Community College System to encourage the young people of this area to attend community colleges first.

My name is Angela Jackson and I am a 36 year old student with a dual major. I have 2 boys ages 15 and 9, Chris and Cameron, and we have lived in Virginia for 2 ½ years. We have lived all over the US and overseas because my ex-husband is in the navy, but I think we will settle here. I will graduate in the spring and I hope to go on to graduate and doctorate school at ODU. I am very busy studying for the GRE and reading any psychology book I can get my hands on. I will take it at the end of the summer and I have to do well. Eventually, I want to do research and work in some sector of conflict management, either with patients or corporations. I would also like to teach a few classes in psychology or communications. My communications degree is in interpersonal communications and I had so many classes in psychology that I decided to major in it also. I love the research part of both degrees and have already done several research projects. I love to study people and their actions, but my fiancé says that I study them too much, like when we're out together and I'm watching the couple next to us instead of paying attention to him. My interests are reading, writing and any activity with the children, especially swimming and going to Busch Gardens to ride the roller coasters. I am looking forward to all I will learn in this class.

Psychology
My name is Denisha Johnson. I am twenty years old and originally from Brooklyn, NY but now live in Sterling, VA with my younger brother, my mother, and my stepfather. With 13 grandkids on one side of my family and 23 on the other side, I am the second oldest on both sides. This, of course, puts a lot of pressure on me to be "perfect". Although I haven't reached perfect yet, I am making my way towards it. I am currently a straight A student. I am graduating a semester early, I have kept a job since I was fourteen years old, I have my own car, and money in the bank. Needless to say, my mother is very proud of me. I am a psychology major, with a minor in criminal justice. I want to work with delinquent children, either in a detention facility or in a regular counseling setting. I do not want to work with adults. When I am at school, I babysit for a family of four children. One of the children has autism, so it takes a lot out of me to work with him. I enjoy it though. When I am at home, I work in a daycare center where I am the head of a class of four year olds. Last summer I had a child with autism and a child with ADHD in the same classroom. I was extremely stressed out that summer. I like to work with kids because it's something new everyday. I've done the office jobs and I was bored beyond belief. I am a very caring person but I will only do as much for someone as they will do for me. I am also very stubborn, thanks to my mother, but I will listen to someone if they prove me wrong. I will not admit I was wrong, but I'll listen to them.

Art History
I was born and raised in Smithfield, Virginia, the great "ham capital of the world," where I led a completely average and normal childhood. Although my family and I resided in numerous houses, we never left the area, but remained four of the mere eight thousands residents of the small, rural town.
As far as my college career is concerned, I immediately enrolled in Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond in the School of Arts program in the fall following my high school graduation, three years ago. Despite its excellent credibility, I realized halfway through my freshman year that it was not the school for me, or at least not at that time. I finished up the year and transferred to ODU the following fall, which brings me to the point in my life where I am currently. I now have one year left of my undergraduate studies and am desperately trying to fit in all the necessary classes to graduate next spring. After two years living in Norfolk, I have realized that I want to continue my education and complete my original plans for college by returning to VCU and getting my masters in Interior Design.
In addition to my educational objectives, I am planning to get married next summer and am currently preparing for the wedding. My fiancé and I met at VCU during our freshman years and have been together ever since. He even stayed by my side when I decided to transfer to another university. He is even toying with the idea of transferring back to VCU, along with me in the fall next year. Also, in addition to school, I have my own business painting murals, faux finishes, and furniture. It is not quite steady enough to be a full time job, but hopefully it will be in the near future. I would love for this to be my occupation and career. But first, I want to travel Europe and planning to live in Manhattan for at least a year, just to say that I have.

Psychology

My name is Sarah Matthews and I am a senior at Old Dominion University. I am a psychology major and am graduating in December. I am involved in a few research teams at ODU, including traffic safety with Dr. Porter (involving tailgating, aggressive driving, and red light running), Human Factors type research with Dr. Baldwin, and will be involved in research with Eva Clark, in the fall, on children and computer usage and women with technology and how they are portrayed in the media. Dealing with school and research keeps me pretty busy during the school year, so over the summer I head home to northern Virginia. I was born and raised in Arlington, VA. My parents, sister, and two half brothers, moved to Ohio and Michigan for a little bit, but always returned to northern Virginia. My brothers are both married and have two kids each. My sister still lives at home with my parents, milking them for all they've got. She attends community college and has been dating the same guy for about 5 years. Currently, my parents, sister, and I live in Stafford, which is about 45 minutes from Washington, D.C. I work full time at a hotel in Manassas, VA and that keeps me pretty busy. This summer, I'm taking this class, and two at Northern Virginia Community College. After graduation in December, I am probably going to take a semester off to make some money to pay off all my credit cards and student loans. Then, hopefully, I will attend George Mason University to get my masters degree in Educational Psychology.

Accounting

I was born in Arlington, VA and grew up in and around the Washington D.C. metro area. I started college as an accounting major at George Mason University in 1988, after 3 semesters I enlisted in the Navy, which brought me to Norfolk in the spring of 1992. I began attending classes at ODU part time in 1995. I moved back to the metro area in the summer of 1998 when my father was diagnosed with cancer. I spent that summer with my father and began working with my current firm in the fall of 1998 after my dads' cancer was in remission.
I am pursuing a degree in accounting and hope to finish next semester. I currently reside in Northern Virginia and work in Georgetown as the financial analyst for a strategic communications firm (GMMB). GMMB handles a variety of political and public education campaigns that (fortunately for me), I stand behind.
I love to travel; each year I go on a "girls only" vacation with three close friends, we typically pick an island. In October we went to Aruba and we all agree that it is worth a second visit. I love my vacation with the girls it is very relaxing, two of my girlfriends are married and have children; our vacation is a chance to reconnect. I am an avid biker and runner, I will be in back in Norfolk in June for the D.C. Aids ride (#7), which will be my third ride. The ride will start in Norfolk and end in D.C. 4 days later.

My name is Shawn Miller and I am a counseling major nearing completion of my degree. I have been married for eight years to my awesome wife Carrie. We live in a rural area called Pilot just outside of the Christiansburg/Blacksburg area. We have an Australian Shepard named Sam and cat named Callie. We enjoy our flower garden and vegetable gardens.
I am formerly from South Carolina where I worked in a large warehouse for eight years. The relocation to this area was helpful in getting me back to school to complete my degree. Upon completion my goal is to attend graduate school and attain a masters degree in social work. I enjoy living in the Blue Ridge Mountains because of the many opportunities to take in all four seasons. I have recently become interested in ornithology and this area is excellent for that interest. I often recommend a trip to the mountains as a therapeutic getaway for everyone that wants some peace of mind.
My true passion is racing dirt bikes but years of injuries have taken me away from all sports. I have filled the void with reading about history with an emphasis on the civil war, world wars, and Indians of North America. I love to hunt during every season and fishing also. I am ethical at all I do. I look forward to taking this class with all of you.

Starting over again is always a challenge. Starting over again on line and tackling school is really a challenge. I took a computer class last semester and got an A but I still feel lost in the fog. However, I am sure this on line class will be just what I need to get speffy at this skill. It could be no worse than a 4th marriage, which I promised I would never do.
Actually, my life has been pretty darn great. I have 5 wonderful healthy kids,2 wonderful stepkids and great friends. I have had lots of careers- golfer, horsetrainer, WW11 airplane dealer, pilot, mommy and wife.
My high school was spent here in Galax and later I attended Radford and ETSU. At the time I was more interested in guys and partying than an education. That produced a first marriage and set of twin girls right off the bat. I learned a lot about raising babies and golf. Did'nt work out, so I kept the babies and got rid of the golfer. The babies are 28 and gorgeous.
I had a kind but not too perceptive 2nd hubby. I became a trainer for East Tenn. Walking Horses and loved every minute. We raised tobacco and hay, planted a garden and raised 2 more little girls. Unfortunately, boredom became a factor in my relationship and I suspect a bit of somewhere over the rainbow on my part also. I went looking for a divorce again and wrecked a lot of lives. I had to eat a lot of crow over that later on . Worse yet, I was still raising 4 babies and had no education to fall back on. I was really cute, though.
Actually, I still am. Passion entered my life with another man. Call me lucky, I often do, my new hubby was just starting a practice and teaching career at ETSU for the new med. School. He convinced me I need to get some real book learnin. So…I went back to school, for 2 semesters. Funny thing about that, 4 children and being a Doc's wife interfered with my plan .
Eleven years, 5 miscarriages, 1 more wonderful baby (this time a boy) later, the passion that ruled my marriage was on the point of killing me or him or both. So with great regret we called it quits. Lots of good life lessons occurred during this time. I went to lots of psychologists and learned how to run a plane business and manage a Doctor's office. I collected lots of money and was very good at management. It was a gin office and I learned an amazing amount about women. Still have not placed men yet, but I'm only 49.
So 2002 rolls in and I am back in Galax. I am still raising baby 4, she is 16 and very independent and strong-willed. Babies 1, 2, and 3 are all grown but we talk all the time. Baby 5 is 12 and lives with Dad. He needs a male influence big time and I miss him terribly. So I see him every month and he will be here for 5 weeks very soon. I struggling to master computer skills and the rest of my book learnin, am very committed to finishing my college and making sure I am good at it. I enjoyed your web page, it revealed a warm and friendly kind of guy. And a challenge is the best thing to keep you growing on with life . So… I will not let this computer get the best of me!

Criminal Justice

I will be graduating from ODU this December with a degree in Criminal Justice. I will most likely go on to get a master's degree, but in what field I have yet to figure out. I also have no idea what the future may hold for me in the way of a career. When people ask me what I'm going to do with my degree, I tell them I'm not going to slam the doors of opportunity on my own feet by narrowing my choices this early in the game.
I can tell you that I'm fascinated with the subject of jury analysis, which is one of the reasons why I chose a psychology minor. I'm also interested in educational and psychological testing and the study of animal behavior-or should I say the study of the human interpretation of animal behavior.
In addition to taking social psychology this summer, I'm enrolled in a deviant behavior class at ODU, and an abnormal psychology course through the University of Nevada at Reno's distance learning program ( www.dce.unr.edu/istudy ).
Life Outside of School:
I'm a native of Buffalo, New York, but I've been calling Virginia my home for about six years now. However, I haven't taken the opportunity to venture beyond the area referred to as Northern Virginia. My husband and I hope to take a trip down to the Norfolk region later this year, at which time I plan on seeing the main campus firsthand.
We, meaning Chris and I, have been married for eight years, and have had three cats-Gabriel, Skeeter, and Randall-whom we've often referred to as our kids. We've also had two white rats named Ally and Toby, a fawn-colored rat named Butterscotch, a three-legged lizard named Pirate, and a hamster we affectionately referred to as Tadpole. We don't have any children without fangs, claws, or fur at this point in our lives.
I spent four years working at Northern Virginia Community College before the budget cuts got to me. I currently hold a job as an operator at a flowers-by-phone call center. I'll worry about finding a job within the realm of criminal justice after I graduate. In the meantime, I stay satisfied with checking out potential credit card fraud through my current job. (I, for one, was surprised to learn that a significant number of people try to buy flowers with illegally obtained credit card numbers.)

My name is Amy Quinn. I am 31. I am the youngest, and only girl, of five. My three oldest brothers are adopted, and are all biological brothers. I have lived here in Virginia for almost four years. I grew up on the coast of southeast North Carolina. I went to college at the University of North Carolina, where I graduated with a Psychology degree in 1992. After spending a few years trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life, I decided to go back to school, and graduated from East Carolina University in 1996 with a second degree in Child and Family Development. I spent two years in New Haven, CT at Yale Children's Hospital as a Child Life Specialist, a position that exists to help children and families adjust to and understand what happens during a hospitalization. In September of 1998 I moved to Norfolk to work as a Child Life Specialist at CHKD. I spent two years working in the ER and Burn Trauma Unit, and a year and a half on a medical/surgical unit. The glaring need for education and support that I saw in these children and families helped me to make the decision about what I wanted to pursue in graduate school. The Community Health program was exactly what I was looking for. I accepted a practicum with CHKD's weight management program, mostly out of convenience, but it has been one of the most incredible experiences of my academic life. In the midst of working in this program, a position became available not only to continue in that program, but other health education endeavors as well. I am barely a month into it, but already am having a wonderful experience.
In my free time, I have many and varied interests. I love to travel, and learn as much as I can about other cultures. This fits nicely with my love of photography, and I have some beautiful pictures from trips I have taken. I consider myself an adventurer, and love to just explore. I enjoy anything having to do with the water. Being outside is what gives me energy, so I'm open to any activity that allows that. Music and books are also a huge part of my life, as many kinds as I can find. My current reading is focused on exploring different aspects of complementary and alternative medicine, but I'm reading the Harry Potter series, too. I enjoy yoga and pilates, and have recently discovered tai chi.
I will be finishing my practicum and graduating at the end of the summer. I am looking forward to being free to do something besides school, although I have enjoyed my program immensely. I don't know what life has in store for me then, but I'm sure it will be an adventure, and I'm ready for it.

My name is Amanda Reese; I go by Mandi as well. I am a single twenty-something, originally from Richmond, Virginia. I am very close with my family, especially my mom, whom I work with at Capital One. Anna, my older sister will be making me an Aunt for the first time this November. I also have a younger brother Ty, who has recently turned 16 and has coincidentally been given a drivers license.
Growing up as a Navy brat, I was given the opportunity to travel frequently. This allowed me to experience many different cultures and environments. I've been lucky enough to be able to call places like Virginia, Pennsylvania, Florida, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, Wyoming, Texas, and Hawaii my home. Hawaii was by far my favorite place to live of all time. I would move back there in a minute. I'm definitely a warm weather kind of girl, which explains my love for the beach and outdoor activities.
I graduated from College of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City, North Carolina in 1997 where I received an AAS degree in Business Administration. Upon graduation, I took some time off from school and did a bit of traveling. I was drawn back to Virginia in 1999 to be closer to my family. I signed up for classes this past January, making school a priority again. I am now pursuing a BS in Human Resource Management through Virginia Commonwealth University and Old Dominion University at John Tyler Community College. I've always known I would have an extended education and am thankful to have the luxury of the internet and online classes to help me along the way.
In recent months, I've been spending my spare time looking at houses. I currently live with my sister and brother-in-law and hope to purchase a home in the next few months.

Me? Hmmm, what to say? I am 22. This is my third semester at ODU. I went to TCC for 3 years and finally managed to get my AS. Ideally, I would have graduated this spring, but I am hoping to finish classes in August and walk in December so I am really only a semester behind. Not bad, I say! About a month before I registered for classes at ODU I decided I wanted to major in psychology. For the most part, I enjoyed the first 5 psychology classes I took. Last semester, I took four more and decided on Cluster 8 instead of a minor (because it would be quicker and I like kids). Somewhere along in April I realized that I could graduate! Here I thought the day would never come and now it is right around the corner. Then what? I have no idea! I do not think I want to be a psychologist. I may end up doing something that has nothing to do with psychology, just like 80% (I made that statistic up) of the population that has as degree they never use. I'm from St. Louis, but we moved when I was 3. Thank you USN! My other half (not legally), Robin, attends Regent University School of Law. He will run for office someday, probably in North Carolina. (BTW, Vote Bob McDonnell-Attorney General 2005). Because of Robin, I have been afforded the opportunity to meet several people in our state's legislature, but we haven't made it to Washington to have dinner with George and Laura. (LOL) I like to play softball and roller blade on the boardwalk. I am the proud owner of the cutest dog in the world: Peanut. He is a red dachshund. I love the beach, but not all the stupid people who loiter the place between Memorial Day and Labor Day. I also like to travel, but don't get to much because of school, work, and lack of funds. I have been to Canada (family vacation), Mexico Mission trip), and Australia (fun vacation). Australia has been the best so far! I went on a surprise trip to New York in January for my birthday. We saw Les Mis. I work in the main office at a high school. It works nice while I'm in school, but working full time and going to school full time don't quite fit well together. I manage ok; however, I won't stay there after I graduate. I just paid off my first car! (Yippee!) I'm already looking for a new one (Yellow Ford Escape). I like dogs, hate cats; like math and science, not keen on history and English; somewhere in-between is psychology. I think I've well exceeded the 250 word mandate. Happy Summer Semester!

I was born the third daughter of two very young parents in 1960. They were "on the run", so I was born in Los Angeles, CA, where I lived for two weeks. I grew up in Illinois, moving between Joliet (yes, where the prison is) and a little town called Elkville. I was the first in my family ever to graduate from high school. I'm 41 and still working on graduating from college.
I enlisted in the Air Force right out of high school. I had the opportunity of traveling both in and out of the country. My son, who is now 19 years old, was born in Torrejon, Spain. I also lived in Florida, New Mexico and Virginia. I have lived in Washington State for 7 years, and finally feel like I've found "home". No, the rain doesn't bother me. It's beautiful here! Especially the summers!
I have attended college off and on over the last twenty years. Every time I would start going, a "life-changing" experience would cause me to stop, and I always seemed to take five-year breaks. I have been attending ODU on a part time basis, consistently since the summer of 1999 and I do plan to graduate in December! I am planning to apply to the University of Washington Law School for the fall of 2003. I have worked since I was 15, but plan to go to school full time and not work if I actually get in! I'm not really sure I can do that since I'm a borderline workaholic.
I have a wonderful husband whom I enjoy spending time with. We enjoy downhill skiing, biking, hiking, in-line skating and windsurfing. We even tried snowboarding in Canada last year! Wow! I was in pain for two weeks! We take turns giving our German shepherd exercise. He takes her for runs and I take her for walks.
Currently, I am a Business Office Manager for two clinics in a large HMO. I have 45 staff and, at times, the job is extremely stressful. Although I do enjoy my work, I am looking forward to the next chapter in my life.

Born the third child to an African American, Richmond descendant; Gerard Samuels and a Fredericksburg descendant; Nancy Samuels. I am the youngest of three daughters; my sisters are DeHavilland, 29 and GeNienne 27.
I grow up both in the Catholic Church and the Baptist Church. My parents made sure that religion was and always would be an important part of our lives. My father was a high school track coach amongst many other things. Because of this we all were very athletic. I started running track probably around 8 years old for summer league. I continue this sport through high school adding basketball and gymnastics in middle school and cross-country in high school. Because I am very outgoing and social, my mother the high school English teacher instilled in me the importance of academics. My parents always said I had the best of both worlds and as you can see I did in many more ways than one. Even though my parents divorced when I was three, I have had a wonderful life thus far. They made extreme efforts to keep us a close net family by celebrating all holidays together as a family.
Presently I am finishing up my Psychology degree, hoping to eventually become a marriage and/ or adolescent counselor. Three years ago I got my Nail Technicians license and have been doing that to help get me through college. So if grad school doesn't work out for me, maybe I'll open up my own day spa. I no longer play sports, but I try to work out when I get a chance. As far as church, I attend as much as I can but probably not as much as my parents would like. Because of the support my family has given me and continues to give me, they are most important to me and everything else comes second.

I was born in Yauco, Puerto Rico. I moved to Virginia when I was 10 years old. I am now 21 and scheduled to graduate in December (fingers crossed). This is the first Internet class I am taking. I enjoy sports and have a very close relationship with my family. My circle of friends are connected to that same circle because we have all been friends since middle school. I overcame recent fear of dogs by getting one. My dog is a mix of puddle and terrier and as you can imagine her size alone is intimidating. My fiancée owns a bird that will probably out live me because recent literature has taught me Cockatoos live over 50 years. I am currently trying to get rid of her but it has been a long struggle. My future wives wants her to talk but ear shattering screams are the closest she has ever been to talking. The bird's wings are not clipped yet she refuses to accidentally fly out the door. She is pure evil. Needless to say the bird and I do not have a great relationship. I am in the mist of planning a cruise to the Bahamas and it is a bit of chaos trying to please my wallet and my fiancée. Hopefully everything will fall into place and I will be out of school and working in a related field if I decide not to join the military. As one can gather from my biography I am engaged but we have not set a date as of yet. Well that is my life summed up in a paragraph hope somebody enjoys it.

I was born October 22, 1980. I am the sixth of seven children. However I am the only child from my mother and father together. I have a very large family.
I have thirteen aunts and uncles on my father's side and four uncles on my mother's side. I have 5 nieces and 3 nephews and so many cousins that I don't know them all.
For the first 10 years of my life I lived in Petersburg, VA. After that, my parents and I moved to Dinwiddie County, VA where we currently reside. All of my other siblings were adults and living on their own, except my younger sister who lived with her mother. I graduated from Dinwiddie County High School in the top ten of my class. After graduation I went directly to ODU. Ever since I can remember I have dreamed of being a doctor. However, my mind had changed about what field to go into. At first I wanted to be a Pediatrician. Then I wanted to be a general Practitioner. Then I was thinking about Obstetrics and Gynecology. Now I am not sure. All I know is I need a break from school-a very small break though.
In High school I was very active. I was in the National Honor's Society, two choirs (gospel choir and concert choir), on the track team, on the Student Council Association, and many more. During my college career I wasn't as active but I am very dedicated to the clubs that I have joined. I was in the Black Student Alliance and in Circle K International. I was awarded Circle K member of the year this year for accumulating the most service hours. Circle K is a service organization that is affiliated with Kiwanis. Now I have only one semester left and I am ready to graduate.

I am Gayatri Sookram. New York City is where I grew up. At the beginning of my junior year at high school I volunteered to work with Geriatric Patients at the Margaret Tietz Nursing Home in New York City. Survivors from the Holocaust dominated this specific nursing home. From my first day there I have a different outlook on life.

During my sophomore year at Queensborough Community College I got married and I have been married now for seventeen years. We have five children four girls and a boy, ages ranging from sixteen to three years. After marriage I decided to be a stay at home Mom and raise my children. I have since resided in South Carolina and California. Washington has been my residence for the past seven years and I'm still not accustomed to the weather here in the Pacific Northwest.

In September 2000 I returned to college. Wow!! I didn't feel out of place as expected, for when I started attending classes many students my age were there furthering their education too. Satisfaction was rewarded when I earned an Associate Degree. I'm now taking classes from ODU at the Olympic College site. This is my first web class and also my first class at Old Dominion. My major is Human Services Counseling with a minor in Psychology. Good luck to everyone.

I have a son, Jonathan, 23 months old, and my wife Vonda is carrying our second child due on June 8. She is convinced he or she will arrive in late May. Or she is hoping so anyway. We also have a yellow Lab, Joshua, who has been sick but is home now healing well. A word of advice; never give your dog and child names that sound even remotely familiar!
I am a Manager at the Best Western in South Hill and am active in several local organizations, including the South Hill Revitalization Committee and Leadership Mecklenburg. I serve on the South Hill Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and am President-elect of the Rotary Club in South Hill. Through my dealings with these groups, I have an opportunity to be involved in the local school system through lunch buddies and the accelerated reading program. I will take this opportunity to lobby readers of this to get involved in your local school system in some fashion. There are needy children there that will be rewarded by your generosity of time and effort. As well, you will receive as much or more energy and fulfillment as those students.
I am a Business Major and over half way through the program. I now wish I had listened to Betty, the site facilitator, and taken more classes each semester, as I would have been finished by now. My grandmother always said, "A hard head makes a sore tail." How right she has been many times. This is the third Internet class I have taken, the others being statistics. I feel certain this class will bring happier memories than those two when I think back in years to come. The class is an elective for me but was highly recommended by one of my classmates. She listened to Betty and has only one class to take in order to graduate.
I look forward to working with all of my classmates through the bulletin board this semester and hope my input will be helpful. I have but two goals for all of my classes; have fun and learn something that has practical value.

Psychology

My name is Natasha Stovall and I'm 20 year old senior here with a major in Psychology and a minor in Criminal Justice. I'm originally from South Boston, Virginia and I now reside in the lovely city of Norfolk. I am an only child, that is well adjusted. I graduated from Halifax County High School in June of 1999. Where I was very active in organizations and also, played softball, basketball, and ran track. I started my College career here at ODU in August of 1999. I started at ODU with a double major in Criminal Justice and Psychology, then I learned that the CRIMINAL JUSTICE degree would not make a big difference in what I wanted to do. I am graduating from Old Dominion University in August 2002, a year early. Being the first on my father's side of the family to graduate from college, so everybody is looking to me to be the big shot in the family. This is the last class that I have to take to fulfill all of my requirements. I have secured a job at the Pines Residential Treatment Center in Portsmouth as a counselor. I plan to attend graduate school in May of next year. In the meantime I plan to work so that I can pay for grad school. I plan to pursue a Master's in Forensic Psychology and then get my Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology. My goal is to become a criminal profiler, maybe for the FBI.

Nursing
I was born in rural Southwest Virginia on September 24, 1962 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. I have lived in this area of Damascus Virginia all of my life and I am the oldest of two children. There is five years between my brother, Mike and I. Like all brothers and sister we would fight like cats and dogs.
Farming was my father's line of work, so it was expected that every summer we would be in the tobacco patch, or the hay field. I really resented this because most of my friends were off having fun, while I was slaving away or at least I thought back then.
I attended a small rural elementary and high school. Of course, I was only interested in boys and basketball. It wasn't until I became a senior in high school that I decided I better get my act together, so I entered the Licensed Practical Nursing Program at the local vocational school. I graduated from the program in 1982 and went directly to work at Johnston Memorial Hospital.
In 1982, I met my husband and we married in 1983. We have two beautiful children Jonathan and Jarrod. After working as an Licensed Practical Nurse, I decided to attend the Community college to achieve my Associate Degree in Nursing. In 1989, I graduated with my Associates Degree in Nursing and went to work for Bristol Memorial Hospital.
I have explored many different avenues of nursing and enjoyed most of them. It wasn't until I went to work for a local hospital based home health agency that I decided to attend ODU for my B.S.N. So here I am ready to graduate this summer. I have truly enjoyed being a nurse it has been a good profession for me.
I love life and my family. My family has been my greatest accomplishment

My name is Charles Tyus Jr. but most people call me Chuck. This summer I am working on a farm, and this Internet class is really convenient because my time seems to be limited now. This is the first class I have taken on the Internet and I am enjoying it so far.
I live in a little town called Jarratt, Va., which is close to Emporia. A lot of people know where Emporia is because they or someone they know has gotten a speeding ticket there. I have lived here all of my life and enjoy the way of life here.
My major is Communications and my minor is in Psychology. I am supposed to graduate in May and am still unsure of what my future holds after college. I do not think anything can be as exciting and scary at the same time as going out into the real world. I just completed my third year here at Old Dominion and have loved every minute of it. Living in Norfolk was a big adjustment for me but I think I have made the adjustment just fine. Perhaps the biggest shock was being able to go to the mall only five minutes away, where here it takes thirty.
I have a brother who is a freshman in high school with whom I live. I do not see as much of my family as I would like, but it seems as though there is always something going on to keep me away. I enjoy going to the beach and playing golf when I do find time for leisure. I also like spending time with my dog that just turned one. I hope this provides a glimpse into my life and a better understanding of who I am.
I am sorry this is late but I have been trying to send it through my ODU e-mail is this not possible? I hope it goes through now.

My favorite subjects are scientific and historical in nature. I am an older returning student: a single( in the final stages of divorce) mother of three. My youngest child is a boy who will be turning two this month. I was born and raised primarily in Westchester County, New York. Scarsdale was the Village I was raised in. It is a suburb of Manhattan.
My father is a Patent Attorney. My mother was a school teacher. Both of my parents have parents from the Midwest. My mother had seven children which are named in alphabetical order. As you may know from my name I am the second child. The first six are girls the seventh George is a boy. My parents divorced about five months before my tenth birthday. At that point our standard of living took a nose dive and I really missed my dad. He would travel overseas to exotic places like Japan and, Portugal. He would go for so long I would not see him for months at a time when I was growing up.
Now my dad is a newly wed for the third time. I now have acquired three step brothers, and hear about their sister who was murdered by her boy friend in her twenties. My other step mother died in 1999. I was very fond of her. she was from Latvia and I learned much about the culture. Her mother was a doctor and her father a mechanical engineer.
Right now my real mother is in the hospital on life support she has had several strokes and heart attacks. She has Lupus and diabetes which caused her premature health problems. I believe my parents marriage failed in part because of my mother's health problems. Eventually it got so bad she had to give up custody of us. My father purchased a second home in Scarsdale with his mother. My grandmother agreed to take care of us. We wound up moving in with him when I was a teenager. Eventually my mother gave up the other house and my dad had two houses in Scarsdale.
I have three wonderful children and family is extremely important to me. I really tried to make my marriage work. I now realize it takes a firm commitment from two people. Some things are out of our hands. Call it fate if you will. My dysfunctional back ground is not all that uncommon. I learned in a Sociology of the family course quite a bit about the norms. Half of all marriages end in divorce. Also a fraction end in death.
I am now working on my bachelors in addition to running a childcare from my home. I am a domestic engineer as I am very skilled as a home maker. I go to an aerobics class most week days and have little free time. I guess it is a very fulfilling life.
My national background is European. I have royal roots on both my maternal and paternal genealogical ancestry. I guess you could say I was a blueblood. LOL. J.K.

My name is Dianne Vital. I am 23 and a single mom. I have a wonderful seven year old son who is in 2nd grade. And he keeps me very busy. I plan to graduate this December with a B.S in Health Science with a minor in Counseling. I currently work for a busy six doctor Nephrology practice. I work there 9-5 m-f and go to school at night. I also have a part time job working as a dialysis technician every other Saturday. I love working both jobs. I love the interaction I have with my patients. I have also just recently moved into my own apartment. I haven't gotten used to it yet but it is nice and cozy. I still have dinner with my dad just about every night. My family emigrated from Peru before I was born. All of my family, besides four of my cousins, is from Peru. So you see my graduation is very important to my family. I will be the first person in my family in the states to graduate from college. I am not sure what I would like to do once I graduate. I do plan to apply for the teletechnet heath care administration masters program. I think I would like to get into the counseling field I would like to work with the teen pregnancy population. Afterwards I'm not sure what I would like to do. I think once I finish my masters program I would like to do some more traveling. Two years ago I had the opportunity to go to Greece and Peru. I had so much fun. I also go to appreciate my life and privileges of being an American.

Human Services Counseling
My name is Diane Walker and I am in my first year at ODU and am a junior. I am majoring in Human Services Counseling and minoring in Psychology. I have hopes of becoming a social worker. My plans are to attend VCU and get a Master's in social work. At the present moment I am unemployed and am on disability. I did not want my health problems keep me away from getting my education so I enrolled this past year, after being out of work for 5 years.
At the present time I reside in Lawrenceville Virginia. I had hopes of moving away upon graduation, but have started a new relationship that looks very promising. His name is Thomas and he lives in Emporia, VA. I have a daughter who is going to be 14 years of age on May 25. She keeps me quite busy with her multitude of friends. For the moment we are living with my grandmother because my father died in February and she needed someone to stay with her. I say for the moment because my daughter does not like living with grandma, so we may move close by if we can.
I was born in Bridgeport CT and raised just outside of there in a little town called Stratford. I attended kindergarten through senior high school there. I really loved living in CT and am sorry we moved to Lawrenceville upon graduation. I still have a lot of family who live in CT so I try to visit when I can.
Upon leaving college the first time after my boyfriend was murdered I went into the military. I stayed for 13 years, got out and went into the reserves. But I got sick so I had to give up my career. I have lived in California, Georgia, Turkey, Holland, and Germany. My most exciting tour was when I went to Africa, although I think I could live in Holland. I have somewhat of a desire to try and obtain employment there after finishing school. Although I do not have much free time anymore, I love to do all kinds of needlework and ceramics.
I forgot to mention that I have a brother who lives in Havelock NC in the Marine Corps. I also forgot to mention that I was in the Air Force. My bother is making a career out of the military and plans to retire in a few years. Alan is divorced and has 4 children. His daughter lives with him.
I plan to go to King's Dominion this summer because I have never taken the time to go and maybe for a few days to Georgia. I hope everyone enjoys the class and has a great summer.

Marketing
I was born on July 1, 1976 in Muskegon, MI. In 1977, we moved to Norfolk VA, my mother's home town. When I was about 3 or 4, my parents divorced. I am the youngest of three, one sister and one half-brother who are both 34 years old. I attended Granby Elementary, Blair Middle School, St. Mary's Academy, and Maury High School. I graduate High School in 1994, and continued on with my studies at Old Dominion University. After a year at ODU I could not decide on a major, so I decided to attend Tidewater Community College to complete my first two years. In 1997, I got married at the age of 20. That following year I completed two AS degrees at TCC. After which I took a break from school. In 1999, I moved to Maryland and gave birth to a happy baby boy, Khalif. I separated from my husband that following year and moved back to Norfolk VA, where I currently reside.
Currently I am a senior at ODU with a major in Marketing. I am due to graduate in December of this year. I am now divorced and raising my son, with the help of my family. I work part-time for the City of Norfolk Real Estate Assessors Office. I do some data entry and I take pictures of the houses in Norfolk, among other things. I decided to take this class because it is online and I thought that it would be interesting to learn more about how people interact. I hope that this will be a fun class and I am looking forward to participating.

Nietzsche once said (something to this effect), "One must have chaos within to give birth to a shining star." He likely said it more than once, I bet. Regardless, that has become my struggle - to take the chaos from within (what Nietzsche called the Dionysian) and create order - something of meaning and purpose with the remainder of my life (the act of creating form and a type of order, he called the Appolonian.) Personally, I call the state of chaos within ADD. And the act of creating order, a pill called Ritalin.
Regardless, I didn't truly begin the overt act of creating meaning and purpose in my life until my mid-thirties, when I returned to ODU and subsequently earned dual degrees in philosophy and English, with a professional writing emphasis, in 1997. I graduated summa cum laude. Other points of great pride for me included winning the first Annual Undergraduate Essay Contest, sponsored by the English faculty, in 1996 for my 14-page paper, "Death and the Artist: A Nietzschean Interpretation of Thomas Mann's Death in Venice." (Got my picture on the front page of the Mace and Crown, too….Who woulda thunk it!) For another paper, titled "An Explication of Plato's Laches," I took huge satisfaction in earning a "100," along with the professor's comments indicating he had learned a lot. Amazing. I had believed, upon entering ODU, that I would dislike philosophy, and certainly Plato. But came to discover that the subject unlocked some of my identity, especially works of Plato and Nietzsche.
Please don't think I sit around reading philosophy, though. I don't. What I do enjoy reading is psychology stuff, and biographies, and really juicy murder and mayhem stories - mostly the true life, nonfiction stuff. Which brings me to my love of psychology.
It was beginning in eighth grade that I wanted to become a psychologist. Eighth grade for me took place in a small town in the northwest corner of Ohio, where I grew up with four younger siblings, three sisters and a brother. At twenty-three I immigrated to the colonial state of Virginia, settling here in the Tidewater area, where I met my husband. We have succeeded in marriage for 21 years. Amazing. I attribute much of that success to him. He is a devoted and hugely supportive friend and husband, an ISTJ, for those familiar with Meyers Briggs. I, on the other hand, am an ENFP - heavy on the "P"…. though perhaps the ADD compounds it - or maybe that's vice versa. (This might make for a good research study in psychology.) Regardless. As polar opposites on the Meyers Briggs personality scale, my husband and I conquer more in our relationship than mere Venus and Mars issues. (Concerning Meyers Briggs, I have observed that the world loves Js, especially SJs….though I can't help wondering that my NP-ness would fit right in if I lived in the Eastern part of the world, rather than here in the West.)
What I most enjoy in my life are movies, book stores and specialty coffee, remaining close with my family, and my cats…two Applehead Siamese, brother and sister Loki and Freya (named for Nordic mythology figures) and a foundling named Gus, a stunning mix of Siamese and orange tabby. Applehead Siamese are the original Siamese breed from Thailand - not the genetic hybrid bred for anexoric looks that most people recognize today as Siamese. You can see the Applehead featured in a number of movies. Bell, Book, and Candle with Kim Novak and Jimmy Stewart is one. Loki, Freya,
and Gus are an integral part of our lives for my husband and me. Singularly obedient for cats, they come to us when called (to either, "Fish Toy!" "Treat!" or "Salmon Fresh off the Grille!" It works for us.
Oh. Another huge pleasure for me are certain TV shows, in this order: Six Feet Under, the Sopranos, and Survivor. Oh, and occasionally Sex and the City, too. (There's a pun in that. Can you recognize it??!!)
One other thing I am proud of accomplishing is having worked for nearly two years for NASA's Microgravity Research Division - my first job after graduating from ODU. A rather big coup d'etat that was for me. My work involved science writing for various NASA publications, including a site on the Internet. During that period I met astronauts (including Shannon Lucid), Dr. Ruth (Yes, true! At a huge conference NASA participated in), and interviewed a Nobel Prize winner in physics and top agency officials at the Canadian Space Agency. (Many years ago I met and shook hands with Al Gore, too, when he was running against Clinton the first time for the Presidency, and got interviewed by the San Francisco Chronicle about it! Heady stuff for a small town Midwestern transplant!)
My recent job has been as a proposal writer for three years, for a behavioral healthcare company. But on Monday, May 20, I make a huge life shift by beginning training for a counseling position at one of my company's treatment centers for aggressive, behaviorally and emotionally disturbed adolescents. This promises to be huge stuff.
Oh. And before I cut this short, I am a risk taker of sorts. I've worked at conquering my fear of horses by taking lessons a few years ago. The lessons concluded after a year, when the supposedly gentle and sufficiently old mare I'd trained on got spooked and reared one evening with me on her back. I figured I'd proven enough by that point - not the least of which was that I'd remained on her back without crashing to the ground. (Hey, this horse weighed a good 1200 pounds. Not tiny by any means.)
As for conquering my fear of great, steep heights, I've developed a love of downhill skiing. Snowshoe is a favorite place, though my husband and I have yet to ski out West. I can ski single black diamonds now - though admittedly not always heroically.
Earlier this year, my husband and I did some pretty big risktaking together when we purchased a car off ebay…..What thankfully has turned out to be a magnificent Mitsubishi Eclipse…..Had to fly to Houston to pick it up, then drove home via New Orleans and toured the French Quarter. A huge experience that was.
In wrapping this up, in one way or another I am finally addressing my early dream of becoming a psychologist, with plans either to earn a Master's in Counseling, followed by certification as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), or perhaps, the goal of all goals - try for acceptance into the Clinical Psychology Program at the Virginia Consortium. My determination for the latter choice will depend partly on how much I want to test my marriage - and finances - more so than usual, anyway.
Oh. And I live in the Churchland section of Portsmouth. And my husband and I have been involved for many years in working with the youth of our church. And two books that are especially memorable for me are Angela's Ashes and Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye. (Sorry so lengthy…but I had fun!)

Accounting
I was born Stephen Miles Williams on November 7, 1975. I grew up in Meredithville, Virginia under my mother (a nurse) and my stepfather (a self-employed auto mechanic). As a child, I exhibited attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. I was difficult to control, until my mother suggested a Christian school as a way to avoid hospitalization. The school was excellent, had a structured environment, and had a religious atmosphere. I quickly developed a better attitude toward life. After attending the Christian school for five years, I went to an academy, where racial hatred grew wildly around me. I quickly found out that life would be no picnic, as I struggled to hold on to the values I adopted at the Christian school.
Throughout my life, I have experienced trouble with epilepsy. I finally had invasive surgery on December 20, 2001, for my right temporal lobe seizures in which the surgeons removed approximately one-fifth of my brain. The positive side to having surgery was that the tissue they removed was not operating properly and was, rather, causing the seizures. Four weeks after surgery, I was back taking classes through Teletechnet.
One unique characteristic that I possess is obsessive-compulsive disorder. I became very ill one summer and, in the process, developed pneumonia. Afterward, I quickly became obsessed with cleanliness. That has subsided very much over the last few years. However, now I find myself too obsessed with reading that I cannot enjoy the major that God directed me to-Accounting. I am very good at math and computer science. It took 7 years before I found the Information Systems Technology major at the community college level. I had finally found something that I naturally enjoyed. In the process of obtaining the associate's degree for that major, I had to take accounting. Accounting was a subject that I truly loved and had been looking for all of my life. Previous attempts at college majors proved insufficient-e.g., math was too concrete, biology too hands-on. Accounting gave me a system of values and methods to follow. It developed into a situation that is symbolic in nature to the Christian school I attended as a pre-teen. This past spring semester, I became a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, an honor society for the collegiate schools of business. Currently, I feel as if my brain is a big sponge waiting to absorb all of the knowledge I can grasp.

I am 28 years old. Currently I am a catering manager at the Holiday Inn SunSpree Resort at the beach. I started in the business 8 years ago. I worked in many restaurants in Massachusetts (that's where I'm from). I decided to go back to school for hospitality management so I moved to Pennsylvania where my parents live. The company I was working for while in school transferred me to Richmond when I graduated. I missed the beach and moved here 2 years ago. I like my job, but I would rather be helping people. Therefore, I decided to go back to school for a Bachelor's degree in psych.
Since I moved here by myself I joined the Jaycees to meet people. I have been able to go hiking, canoeing, and camping (my favorite past time) and help the community. Everything we do is fun. I'm even going white water rafting in 3 weeks. I've never been before, so it should be fun. I love to travel and want to see the world. Some of my favorite places are the Barber Hill at Back Bay, Newport Beach, Rhode Island, New York City at Christmastime, and Skyline Drive (the big waterfalls). I love the beach and also the mountains. I love all the seasons as well. I miss the snow.
I love animals. I have a Shepherd/Husky mix named Maverick. He's a great watchdog and he keeps me company.
My future plan is to move back to Massachusetts after I graduate. I will then get my Master's up north. I plan to be near my family. They all live in Mass. It's very important to me to see my niece and nephew grow up seeing as though I don't have any kids of my own yet.
Before I move back I need to focus on school. I look forward to getting back into it. This is my first class toward my degree. I'm a little nervous, but I know that it's well worth it.
