A few years after I began working full time, a graduate student asked me about my hobbies. "Hobbies???" I asked, incredulously. "I teach full time and have a young child -- I don't have time for hobbies!" I'm very, very glad to report that some things, at least, have changed for the better. Yes, I still teach full time. The young child is now in college. And I do have a life outside work and parenthood. Sort of. Sometimes . . .
Martial arts
I teach and train in two styles.  My core style is an evolving, eclectic martial art called "Shoshin-do", which has its roots in Tae Kwon Do but incorporates lots of other arts, most importantly hapkido, wing chun, and American boxing.  More recently, I've been practicing arnis (Phillipine stick fighting), which is a ton of fun.  I've been attending all-women's training camps for the last 5 summers, which has been a fabulous treat.  Here are a few links that I like. Horses
This is my new passion; I finally decided to fulfill a lifelong dream by taking riding lessons.  This being the East Coast, I'm pursuing Hunter training at the stunning Fair Haven Equestrian Farm in Pungo.  If you're interested, this is definitely an awesome place to train.  And muck stalls, of course!

Speculative fiction
"Why don't you get your nose out of that book"? That was a pretty common refrain when I was young; the only reason it's not now is that neither my husband or daughter would dare. I read a variety of books -- mostly sci-fi, fantasy, and murder mysteries -- none of it for the purpose of improving my mind. I just like a good story. Check out these places.

  • SFF Net is the new best place I've found to look for information about science fiction and fantasy; from there, you'll find links to all sorts of speculative fiction. It'll also get you to author web pages.
  • Another cool place is the Internet Speculative Fiction DataBase -- a searchable database that has more stuff in it than any reasonable person could ever want.
  • I just discovered  Stop, You're Killing Me! , an amazing site indexing just about every mystery author and series you can imagine.  Awesome!
Couch potato
I don't watch a whole lot of TV -- mostly because I don't have a lot of time and absolutely hate commercials.  But I do have some favorites -- all of which I simply watch on DVD.  Here they are, in no particular order. Check out the list and see if you can catch the theme :)
  • Startrek.com is the official Star Trek site, with all kinds of information as well as games and other goodies.  TNG was my favorite Star Trek show, followed closely by Deep Space 9. Kyra rocks!
  • A new and current favorite is Farscape. AerynSun rocks! Why do we only discover these things after they've been canceled?
  • Greetings From Babylon 5 is the official Babylon 5 site, and a good one it is. But probably the best site out there is  The Lurker's Guide to Babylon 5 . I don't quite know how I'm surviving without this show -- thank heavens for DVDs!  Yes, Ivanova, Delenn & Lyta rock!
  • I thought I was much too old to enjoy shows featuring a variety of angst-filled teens. Boy, was I wrong. My prime-time world ended when Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended its 7-season run.  Again, thank goodness for DVD's!  The official UPN site has some basics.  For a really good central hub, with lots of discussions and great links, check out More Than Spike, a site dedicated to the work of James Marsters.  Buffy rocks, as do Willow, Tara and Faith!
  • Xena rocks.  Gabrielle may possibly rock even more. But I bet you already knew that, huh? Whoosh! is the best place to begin exploring the Xenaverse. Check out The Xena Scrolls for some neat artwork and fanfic; Angie's Cure for XWS for photo montages.
  • Even though Scully rocks, I stopped watching the X-files before it ended. But my friend Julie has a good X-Files site that includes nifty graphics and tons of links to important places. Check it out, especially her random conspiracy theory generator.
Celtic music
Actually, my taste in music is pretty eclectic, including everything from classical to the occassional metal offering.  Celtic is still my favorite, though. Body Art
I've entered that dangerous territory of always thinking that the last tattoo would be the end -- then realizing that just one more little piece would really be great.  My tattoist has a great site at IAM Tattoos - Custom Tattooing and Body Art Designing where Spirit, Science and Art become One.   And my friend and fabulous martial artist Kore' Grate does aweseome work.  Check out her studio, Tatu's by Kore'.
