martial arts lava and juniper beaver pond New River bridge gallardia

I've been using the WWW as a source of images for teaching and personal use for a few years now, and am finally ready to make my own contribution.  I hope some of you will find these enjoyable; I'd be even happier if you found them useful.  Before you download, please review the terms of use described below.  Then browse away. You can preview the images two ways -- via pages of thumbnail images or via a written index.  As necessary,  the thumbnails are linked back to whatever written comments I think might be useful.

Enjoy!

About the images
With the exception of the martial arts photos, I took the pictures from which these images are derived.  The martial arts photos were scanned from prints at 600 dpi; the rest of the images are from  35 mm slides scanned at 1000 dpi.  I don't know if that much resolution was absolutely necessary, but the result is, I think, images that will look sharp in a variety of applications, including printing onto overhead transparency film.

Special thanks to Karen Vaughan, Digital Services Librarian at the Perry Library, Old Dominion University, for help with the slide scanner and CD burner!

Terms of use
These images are copyrighted, but absolutely free for non-commercial use.  You can use them as is or modify them at will.  Here are the only things I ask:

  • An acknowledgement would be nice.
  • If you modify the images, please don't give me credit except for the original.
  • Even if you don't provide an acknowledgement, please e-mail me to let me know that you've decided to use one or more of them.  If you're using them on web pages, please send me the url.  I especially would like to hear from anyone using the pictures for educational purposes.
About the thumbnail pages
To accomodate folks (like me!) with slow browsers, I've tried to minimize the number of thumbnails on each page.  The trade-off, of course, is that I need more pages to accomodate them all.  Oh, well -- that's life on the WWW.

Rather than link each thumbnail to the full-size image, I've provided a text link (which includes the size of the file) to do the same job.   For some images, you'll also find links back to the written index, where I've included explanatory comments that might make the images more useful for teachers.  Finally, each page includes a link to a ZIP file that contains all of the full-size images illustrated on that page.  To jump right to the thumbnail pages, use these links:

  • Martial arts
  • Miscellaneous critters
  • Miscellaneous other
  • New Mexico/Socorro
  • New Mexico/other
  • West Virginia/beaver habitat
  • West Virginia/plants & habitats
  • West Virginia/streams
  • West Virginia/flowers
  • West Virginia/miscellaneous
  • About the written index
This page should be pretty self-explanatory; it simply lists all the images in a hierarchical format that mirrors their file structure and includes whatever comments I think might be helpful.  The name of each image file will take you to the full-size image; for each subdirectory, I've included a link to a ZIP file that contains all of the full-size images from that subdirectory.

Now, enough reading -- have fun!
