Mitosis: Interphase - DNA Molecules to Chromosomes

                                         k

. Originally in the G1 stage there were 46 chromosomes DNA molecules. Each of these DNA molecules have the potential of becoming a chromosome when the DNA coils and condenses which occurs during the prophase stage of mitosis. This will be discussed in  a later lesson.  After DNA replication during the S stage the G2 stage would contain 92 DNA molecules; however,  since the two strands of DNA remain connected together by a centromere only a single chromosome will form after condensing . This single chromosome consists of two chromatids

Draw a figure showing a pair of chromosomes in the parent cell before S stage (DNA replication) and after the S stage which still contains a single pair of chromosomes but each chromosome consists of two chromatids.
