Mitosis: Summary

Answer check:  Did your figure look like the figure below?

                                                                                |G     |g
                                                                                |       |
    mother cell's genotype = GgTtRR                          |t      |T
                                                                                |       |
                                                                                |R     |R

                                                         arrangement of genes on chromosomes

                   |G     |g                                             |G    |g
                   |       |                                               |       |
                   |t      |T                      and                  |t     |T        two daughter cells
                   |       |                                               |       |          (both GgTtRR)
                   |R     |R                                           |R     |R

arrangement  of genes of both  sets of chromosomes

How can two daughter cells that have the same number of chromosomes and identical genes as the  mother cell form from a single mother cell?

The DNA (chromosomes) duplicate during late interphase right before chromosome formation and segregation.

The figure above represent the single mother cell. Note the genetic makeup (AaBb). The figure to the right is the mother cell after the S stage of mitosis. Note the genetic makeup (AAaaBBbb). Examine the figure below after mitosis forming two daughter cells. Note the genetic makeup of each daughter cell is (AaBb).

Draw these in your notes.

Read behavioral objective 12.  Check to see if you can identify the following stages of  mitosis.
