Miniunits

This is where you can find the readings and activities for each separate miniunit. The Miniunits main page contains a list of Biology 108N miniunits that are available for study on the World Wide Web. When you click on the name of the miniunit you wish to study, you are taken to the beginning page of that miniunit. From there you can choose which activity you wish to participate in, or which lesson you wish to study.

There are two "styles" of miniunits. One (Epsilon)has all of the lessons listed from beginning to end, allowing you to study whichever you choose in whatever order you choose. The second style (Zeta) works much like an interactive book. You begin at the beginning, and then proceed through the lesson, answering questions and participating in activities until you come to a stopping point, or the end.

One feature of the Miniunit section is the notepad. The notepad allows you to take notes on the lessons and then print them out (if your computer or lab is equipped with a printer). To turn on the notepad, click on the "On" button at the top of the beginning page of the miniunit. You may access help about the notepad by running your mouse over the words "Help!", "How to Print", or "About". To shut off the notepad, return to the main screen of the miniunit and click on the "Off" button.

Course Information

This page contains links to information for students of Biology 108N. Class schedules, readings, and behavioral objectives can all be found on this page. The readings and objectives are separated by miniunit.

Resources

The Resources page is divided into three sections. The first is this page, which gives students an overall view of the site and the features on it. The second is Web Tutorials and Resources, a page which contains links to tutorials and information about the World Wide Web. The final page in the Resources section is Biological Web Resources, a page which contains links to biology-related sites on the WWW.

Testing

This page contains practice tests for the miniunits that are available for study online. You may only take each test once and have the results be valid, as there is only one set of test questions for each miniunit. You should take the test after you have completed studying for your assigned miniunit. The grade you get on the practice test is a good estimate of your performance on the actual test.

To take the test, click on the name of the miniunit you wish to test your knowledge of. This will take you to a new page with fifty test questions on it. Answer each question by clicking on the circle next to the letter of the answer that you think is most correct. When you have finished the test, click on the button that reads "Submit your answers". You will be taken to a screen that will tell you the number of questions you got correct out of fifty. To get your percentage grade, multiply that number by two. You may change your answers at any time up to when you press the "Submit your answers" button.

The Testing page also contains information about the Testing Center and its hours.

Communications and Feedback

The Communications and Feedback section was created to allow students to communicate their feelings and input about the site and course with the professor and programmers, in addition to giving students a forum to discuss their assignments with one another.

The first section, the Questions and Answers Board, is where students can post questions for the professor and other students. The titles of postings appear at the top of the first page. To read the posting, click on the title. Students may also read responses to the posting in the same manner, if there have been any.

To create your own posting, fill in the form at the bottom of the first page, with your name, your email (if any), and the subject of the post. Then type in the text you wish to post, and click on the "Post Message" button. To respond to someone else's posting, click on their subject and read their post. Then scroll down to the heading "Respond to this post". Then follow the same procedure as if you were creating a new post.

The second section in the Communications and Feedback section is the Student Feedback form. When a student has completed a miniunit, they are asked to fill out the feedback form to give the professor and designers input from a user's perspective. To fill out the form, click on the circle next to the answer that best describes your feelings. You may also type in additional comments at the bottom of the page. When you are finished, click on the "Submit Feedback" form.

The final section in the Communications and Feedback section is the Error and Typo report form. If a student encounters a problem within the site, they are asked to report it via this form. First, enter the title of the page (found at the top of the page) that the error or typo was found on. Then, in the next text area, enter a description of the error or typo. Then click on the button that reads "Submit Report".
