William D. Stanley received a B. S. degree from the University of South Carolina in 1960 and M. S. and Ph. D. degrees from North Carolina State University in 1962 and 1963, all in Electrical Engineering. He was a full-time faculty member at Old Dominion University for nearly 35 years, during which time he served as a department chair for 27 years. Following his retirement, he was awarded the designation of Eminent Professor Emeritus and he has continued working for the University on a consulting basis.  
  Considering multiple editions, Dr. Stanley is the author of about 19 college textbooks and has been Principal Investigator on more than 40 research and development contracts with NASA Langley Research Center, mostly in the areas of microwave remote sensing and digital signal processing. He is also a Registered Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia. During his career, he received about a dozen teaching awards, including one of the prestigious State Council of Higher Education Outstanding Faculty Awards
