Accessing Research Mass Storage from Microsoft Windows Environment

Instructions on use of WinSCP to access mass storage:

  • You must have a MIDAS account and a unix (LIONS2) account to access research mass storage.
  • Once you have a MIDAS account, you can then setup a LIONS2 account from the MIDAS web page.
  • Login in to MIDAS and select the Activate button to create a LIONS2 account. No additional paperwork is necessary and your LIONS2 account should be established within an hour.

If there is no button, then LIONS2 should be listed as one of your services.

Send an email with your LIONS2 account to your faculty advisor requesting access to mass storage. Until this is done, you will not have the ms folder defined to your lions environment.

Faculty should contact unixhelp@odu.edu to request mass storage use and access to mass storage.

To access mass storage from a Windows pc, you need to have a utility called WINSCP installed on the pc. It is a free utility that is available from the web site below. You will need administrative rights to install this program.

    http://winscp.net

Once you install and run Winscp, you can define a new session with the New button.

The WINSCP interface is a drag and drop windows utility with your LIONS2 account on the right side of the screen. There will be a folder named "ms"

Enter the Host name and your lions username (e.g. msachon). Don't enter your password. You will be prompted for the password when you connect.

Select the SCP protocol radio button and the SAVE button.

Now you will see your defined session. Click on the Login button at the bottom of the screen.

Enter the LIONS2 (i.e. MIDAS) password when prompted.

Click OK if the following Error box appears.

The successful login will display the following window with your C drive on the left and your LIONS account on the right. Click the MS folder to access the mass storage device. Drag and drop files to move between mass storage and your desktop.

Please se mass storage responsibly. This storage is for research data only and is not to be used to store disk backups or other non-research data.
