X-Win32 7.0 Setup Instructions

These instructions walk you through the process of setting up X-Win32 V6.13 on your machine to access the LIONS2 systems through the StarNetSSH tunnel. Other versions may have slightly different dialog boxes. THREE THINGS TO MAKE NOTE OF - (1) THIS VERSION OF X-WIN32 REQUIRES AN ODU IP DOMAIN CONNECTION, (2) THE INSTRUCTIONS HAVE BEEN CHANGED TO FAVOR THE XFCE4 WINDOW MANAGER OVER KDE, AND (3) PLEASE NOTE THAT XDMCP WILL NOT BE SUPPORTED FOR CONNECTIVITY TO ANY LIONS2 BOX AFTER SPRING SEMESTER 2005.

  1. First, open the directory where you have saved X-win32 version V7.0.
    Click on the x-win700sf.exe icon as seen below.

  2. It will then begin to extract Files.


  3. Language Setup should pop up. Select English and click on OK.


  4. InstallShield wizard will briefly appear.


  5. The InstallShield wizard box will pop up.
    Click on the Next button to proceed.


  6. License Agreement will pop up. Please read and then click Yes button to proceed.


  7. The License Key window will appear. Type in the number as seen below and click Next.
    Key: 454-42056-46293-37780


  8. The Key Information box will appear. Click OK to proceed.


  9. Destination box will appear, click Next to proceed.


  10. Setup Type box will appear; choose Typical, as seen below, then click the Next button to proceed.


  11. Program Folder box will appear, leave it set as seen below and click Next button to proceed.


  12. The Program application will begin installing the software.


  13. When the application has finished installing, make sure the Run X-Win32 box is checked, as seen below, then click the Finish button.


  14. If you're running Windows XP SP 2 with the Windows Firewall in place, it will possibly come up with the following Windows Security Alert message. Click on Unblock ONLY if Name is X-Win32 PC X Server, then proceed with the instructions.


  15. Connect Method box will appear as seen below.
    Select StarNetSSH and then click the Next button.


  16. The Unix Host box will appear, enter sol-login.lions.odu.edu and click Next.


  17. The Login ID / Password box will appear as below.
    Don’t be alarmed if you see a name already in the Login Box. Simply clear it and type in your LIONS2 ID or leave it blank. (Leave the password field blank!) Then, click Next.


  18. The Host Command box will appear.
    Click SunOS (Solaris), then fill in the Command field with startxfce4.
    Click Next to proceed.


  19. The Name of Session box will appear.
    Type in LIONS2 and un-check the Launch this session now box.
    Then, click the Finish button.


  20. Now, you'll need to customize your configuration. To proceed:
    1. click on the "Start" button
    2. click the text "All Programs"
    3. click on "X-Win32 7.0"
    4. click on "X-Config"


  21. The X-Win32 Configuration box will appear.


  22. Click on LIONS2 and then click on the Edit button.


  23. The Edit Session window will appear.
    Click the button labeled Edit PuTTY Session in the middle of the window.


  24. The PuTTY Configuration Window will appear.


  25. Under the Category area, click on SSH.
    Click the 2 only checkbox as shown.


  26. Under "Encryption cipher selection policy:", click on Blowfish.


  27. Next, click the Up button to move Blowfish to the first cipher position.



  28. Under Category, click on Auth and check the boxes as shown below.


  29. Under Category, click on X11. Make sure that
    • Enable X11 forwarding is checked
    • Under "X display location", enter localhost:0
    • Check on MIT-Magic-Cookie-1


  30. Again under Category, click on Tunnels. Make sure Local ports accept connections from other hosts is checked on. (Note that the last word may be cut off as shown - that's okay.)


  31. Under Category, click on Connection.
    In the "Seconds between keepalives (0 to turnoff)" area, set the value to 1. (Again, note that the work 'turnoff' may be cut off as in the picture - that's okay.)


  32. Back under Category, click on Session.
    Under "Saved Sessions", click on Default Settings, then click the Save button. Close the window by clicking on the X button in the upper right corner of the window.


  33. You will now be at the Edit Session screen again.
    If you want this session to automatically start when you launch X-Win32, then click Auto Start box in the "Session Flags" area - otherwise, leave it unchecked.
    Also, if you want X-Win32 to be a little quieter, click the checkbox next to Show Messages as shown.
    Click the Save button to save this session.


  34. You will now be at the X-Win32 Configuration window again.
    Click on the Window tab and set settings as pictured below.
    The Width and Height settings will very depending on the resolution setting on your computer. You can adjust them to suite your taste.


  35. Click on the Security tab and you should have it as set below.
    There should be no settings set in this box.


  36. Click on the Other tab and set settings as pictured below.
    Click the Apply button and then click the OK button.


  37. Now you can launch X-Win32 for the first time.
    1. click on the "Start" button
    2. click the text "All Programs"
    3. click on "X-Win32 7.0"
    4. click on "X-Win32"
    You should now see X-Win32 as pictured below.
    Bring up the menu by right-clicking on X-Win32 title bar and then click Sessions. Then, click on LIONS2 as shown below.

  38. A login prompt should appear. Type in your User ID and Password and click OK.

  39. A PuTTY Security Alert will appear on the first login try.
    Simply click the Yes button.


  40. When X-Win32 establishes a connection, the XFce4 Desktop will appear as shown below.

  41. Your installation and configuration is now complete.
    To customize XFce4, right-click on the Desktop to bring up the Desktop Menu, click on Settings then All Settings...

  42. To exit XFce4, click on the circular icon to the left of the clock on the bottom panel.
    When asked Are you sure you want to exit?, select Quit.

  43. Please note that the session won't close completely and will now appear to hang - this is an issue with XFce4 that we are trying to address. For now, to completely exit XFce4, click on the X in the top right hand of the X-Win32 window.
    A dialog box will appear, stating that X-Clients are still active. Quit Now?.
    Click on the "OK" button to close the session.

MORE CONFIGURATIONS

The procedures above are for setting up the XFce4 desktop. For setting up GNOME or KDE desktops, follow instructions below.

  1. Right click on the X-Win32 button in the Windows tool bar and then click on the XConfig option.

  2. The X-Win32 Configuration Box will appear as seen below.
    Click on the Add button.


  3. The Connect Method window will appear. Select StarNetSSH and then click on the Next button.


  4. The New Session window will appear.
    Fill in Session Name field, Host Name field, and Command field as below to configure the GNOME desktop environment for LIONS2.
    Then click the Save button.


  5. To configure the KDE desktop environment, configure as seen below.
    Then click the Save button.


  6. You will then be back at the X-Win32 Configuration box.
    Click the OK button and your new session is ready.


PLEASE NOTE: If you are configuring for specific computers, be aware the fields will have different names than the ones listed in this example.

If you have several different sessions, do not click the "Auto Start" checkbox. Auto Start is used to start a session immediately when starting X-Win32. It will not allow you to pick a session at startup.


WINDOWS XP SP2 FIREWALL CONFIGURATION

  1. Click on the start button and then click on Control Panel in the menu that appears.

  2. The Control Panel box will appear.
    Click on Security Center.

  3. The Windows Security Center box will appear.
    Click on Windows Firewall.

  4. The Windows Firewall box will appear. Now, click on the Exceptions tab.


  5. Now click on the Add Program button.


  6. The Add a Program box will appear.
    Search through the Programs category until you find the X-Win32 program. Click on it and then click OK.


  7. You will be back to the Windows Firewall box. X-Win32 will be added to the exceptions list as seen below. Click the OK button, then close all the other windows.
