Physics 231 Recitation

Evaluations Fall 1998

These comments were written by students and transcribed by the Physics Department. These are all of the comments received for this course.

He does a fairly good job explaining theories and concepts, but I feel that more time could have been spent doing example homework problems.

__________

Dr. Weinstein is an outstanding teacher. He communicates complex ideas very well.

__________

He's doing fine!!

__________

Very good at communicating ideas about physics but not help full in understanding homework and techniques to solve it. This was the purpose of the class, not to understand ideas but to learn to solve problems.

__________

I don't think this class should be mandatory.

__________

Class seems helpful.

My comment on the fourth comment: This was the purpose of the class, not to understand ideas but to learn to solve problems. This is one of the major problems facing introductory physics, convincing the students that understanding how the world works is far more important than being able to plug numbers into authority-figure-given equations.

Incidentally, when I did work problems on the board, the class was almost completely comatose. When I discussed concepts, they became involved and interested. This did not help my evaluations. They are the worst I have ever received.
