Image Enhancement

Mission

The homeland security research initiative at Old Dominion University is designed to advance research activities and train expertise to deal with emerging needs related to America’s vulnerability to terrorism. The Homeland Security Research Group identifies specific areas relevant to homeland security and finds resources from local, state and federal agencies to support Old Dominion University in its effort to protect the nation from terrorist attacks. The mission of HSRG is to find a universal solution to secure the homeland from intruders by providing a transparent environment.

Research Focus

Prior detection and recognition of human intruders and radiological/chemical/ biological/nuclear weapons at ports of entry by advanced computer vision and image processing techniques help prevent possible terrorist attacks. Automatic identification and verification of speakers over telephone lines could help determine the source of the individuals who are planning for terrorist attacks in and around the country. Efficient transmission of audio and video data to a hierarchically distributed server network around the world helps real time searching and identification of individuals entering the nation. HSRG has currently initiated the following research activities:

·         Visibility improvement in video sequences captured at non-uniform and extremely low lighting environment

·         Human face detection, tracking and recognition in video sequences

·         Network enabled feature search for person identification from databases in servers distributed around the world

·         Explosive detection from high resolution X-ray images

·         Explosive detection from millimeter wave images

·         Radiological and nuclear threat detection with millimeter wave imaging systems

·         Speech recognition and speaker identification
