Chromosomes: Number of Chromosomes

How many chromosomes are there in a eukaryote cell? The number may vary from an organism of one species to an organism of another species but the number will be the same in normal individuals of the same species. Humans have forty six chromosomes in their somatic cells, corn has twenty chromosomes, and fruit flies have eight chromosomes.

Examine the figure for a male human karyotype shown in the G-5 readings. A karyotype is the chromosome complement of a cell or organism, characterized by the number, size and configuration of the chromosomes as seen during metaphase of mitosis.
