THE BASICS

These pages are not intended to be all inclusive;  however, I hope you'll find them to be a helpful reference for some of the most common maneuvers when building a Web page.  If there is anything specific you would like to see added, please let me know!

General - When building your pages, remember a few details.  You build your pages in Composer mode, but you see what they will look like by clicking on the preview button.  You must always save your work before you can preview it, and you must always preview your work before you can see what your changes will actually look like to viewers.  It can get confusing!  And if you don't see your changes in the preview page, hit the reload button before you start kicking and screaming.

Internal Links - Internal links are those that bring you to another point on the same page.  For example, when you click on the internal link at the bottom of this page that says Back to the top, it moves you to another location on this page.  To create an internal link, you must first have a source and a target.  The target is where you want your visitor to be after clicking the link; the source is where they will click to get there.  Think of an arrow and a bulls eye.  The source is where you shoot the arrow from.  The target is the bulls eye.  To create this link:

  • Place your blinking cursor where you want the visitor to wind up, or where you want your target to be.
  • Click on the target button on your toolbar.
  • Type in a name for the target where it says, "Enter a target name for this location."  Try and make it descriptive so that you will recognize it.  Common names are "top,": "bottom," etc.
  • Click on OK.
  • You will see a little target  appear.  It will NOT appear in the preview window.
  • Now go down to your source--it can be text or an image--and highlight it.
  • Once highlighted, click on the Link button on your toolbar.
  • You will see a large white box that reads "select a named target in current page."  Click on the target that you wish to be the source, possibly the one you just named above.
  • Click OK.
Now once you go to the Preview, you will find that your link works!  Caution: If your link doesn't appear to work, first make sure that you have switched to the preview mode.  Then make sure that your target and source are not already on the same screen.  Otherwise it will be working and you just won't realize it!

External Links - External links are those that bring you to another page--even if it's another one of your own pages!  To create an external link, simply:

  • Highlight the text or image that you wish to create the link from
  • Click on the Link button.
  • In the box where it says, "Enter text to display for a new link:", type in the URL that you wish to link to.  Include the ENTIRE URL.  For example, if you wish to go to Coca-Cola, type in http://www.coke.com.  If you wish to link to another of your own pages, type in http://www.geocities.com/username/file.html, (user name and file name represent your unique names).  For more information, see naming files.

  • Click on OK.  To test the link, preview the page and click on the link.  Watch for TYPOS!
